HUZHONG, Heilongjiang, July 1 (Xinhua) -- More than 20,000 firemen are battling lighting-triggered forest fires in northeast China as continuous hot weather undermines their efforts, forest fire prevention authorities said.The fire, spotted Saturday, continued to spread Wednesday due to high temperatures after having weakened overnight, said Sun Zhagen, deputy director of China's National Forest Fire Prevention Headquarters.The forest fire first occurred in a part of the Greater Hinggan Mountains in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and then extended to the neighboring Heilongjiang Province.Rescuers were still struggling to put out the fire at more than 30 sites in the two regions, said a spokesman with the fire fighting headquarters at Huzhong, a major fire site.Further, another 6,000 fire fighters and additional equipment would be sent to control the fire in Heilongjiang, said the spokesman."As it is too hot to get close to the scene to put out the fire, we have to build fire barriers during the day and battle the blaze at night," said Pang Zhiqiang, a forest policeman.Sparks are being buried under the burnt debris of wood, often as deep as 30 cm and easily set on fire again by wind, said rescuers at Huzhong District."We felt thirsty, dizzy and had trouble breathing after staying in the burnt forest for just 10 minutes", one fireman said.Each of the rescuers, carrying about 25 kg of equipment on his back, could only carry four bottles of drinking water, a rescuer with the Heilongjiang forestry police force told a Xinhua reporter. "If the bottle water is not enough, we drink the river water, though there are worms in it."Some thirsty fire fighters said they even dug into the ground and breathed in the moisture. Also, many rescuers have become exhausted after remaining awake and working for four days.Temperatures in the Greater Hinggan Mountains Region have been hovering over 37 degrees Celsius recently and seven counties and districts have witnessed record-high temperatures, said Na Jihai, chief of the Heilongjiang Provincial Meteorological Bureau.Temperatures in Huzhong District hit 39.7 degrees Celsius Saturday, Na said.Fire-control experts in Inner Mongolia also said such an extremely-hot weather was rarely seen over the past six decades.The two regions have dispatched three aircraft and 10 cloud seeding rockets to conduct artificial precipitation operations, according to local meteorological departments.The dry and hot weather will continue for the next three days, but a light rain is forecast for Thursday, according to the National Meteorological Center of China Meteorological Administration."This is a battle between human beings and nature. GONGSHAN, Yunnan, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers are racing to search for 80 people still missing three days after rain-triggered mudslides hit a remote mountain town in southwest China's Yunnan Province, killing at least 12.By 7 p.m. Friday, rescuers had recovered six more bodies, bringing the death toll to 12, said Hou Xinrong, deputy head of the Drung-Nu Autonomous County of Gongshan, which administers Puladi Township where the mudslides occurred.Hampered by the mountain terrain and persistent rainfall, the rescue efforts had been progressing slowly, Hou said. "Excavators can't proceed to the site and mountain torrents could be triggered at any time due to the downpours."Most of the missing people are employees of the Yujin Iron Mine and residents of Puladi, where the mudslides struck at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.Around Friday noon, a Xinhua reporter saw several soldiers digging in the debris with spades, hoes and sometimes their bare hands in hardest-hit Litoudi Village."We've found a body here, but it was stuck in the mud. We have to be gentle to ensure the integrity of the body," said Yang Pingang, an officer with the Yunnan Provincial Military Area Command. "We want to show our respects to the deceased."

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- All the Chinese trapped in the flood-hit Pakistan's northwest province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been evacuated to safe places with the assistance of the Pakistani side, said Liu Jian, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan on Monday.According to Liu, a total of 265 Chinese workers and engineers working at a hydro power station project in the Patan area of Kohistan District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were trapped on a mountain after a huge landslide triggered by floods and torrential rains washed across their work site on July 29.Three Chinese engineers and workers went missing after they were reportedly washed away by the flood water and landslide while working inside a tunnel.The trapped Chinese who retreated up to a nearby mountain surrounded by the flood water suffered a great deal as they were in serious lack of food and water and had to fight the coldness of living in the open atop a mountain lashed by torrential rains.Upon hearing the news of the Chinese trapped in the flood-hit area of northwest Pakistan, the Chinese embassy immediately kicked off an emergency rescue operation under the assistance of the Pakistani government, army and police.Three military helicopters were dispatched to the site where the Chinese were trapped for the rescue work. Large numbers of troops and police forces were mobilized as well. The Chinese ambassador together with his embassy colleagues also rushed to the site from Islamabad on July 31 by fighting the difficulties on the disrupted roads leading to Patan.After nearly five days of cocerted efforts by the Chinese and Pakistani sides, all the Chinese trapped on the mountain in the Patan area had been evacuated to safe places as of late Monday afternoon, said Liu Jian, adding that the search operation for the three missing Chinese is still underway.However, the chance for the survial of the three missing Chinese is very slim, said Pakitani police officers who are involved in the search operation.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in the massive mudslide in northwest China's Gansu Province has risen to 1,144, with 600 still missing as of 4:30 p.m. Thursday, the provincial department of civil affairs said late Thursday.The toll rose from 1,117 on Wednesday.Overnight downpours triggered new floods and mudslides to the mudslide-devastated town of Zhouqu in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, leaving three people missing.Floods also have left eight people dead and eight others missing in two counties in Gannan's neighboring city of Longnan on Thursday.
