FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Administrators at Colorado State University are investigating after a parent on a campus tour called campus police on two Native Americans who were also on the tour.In a letter sent to faculty and staff on Wednesday, officials said a parent on a tour on Monday called police because she was “nervous” about the presence of the two young men, who had joined the tour in progress.The men were visiting campus from New Mexico and were a part of the tour, officials said. After speaking with police, the men were allowed to rejoin the tour, but by that time the tour had moved on and the men left campus to return home.The mother of the boys, Lorraine Kahneratokwas Gray, told Denver7 that her 17 and 19-year-old sons traveled to CSU while she stayed behind in Santa Cruz, New Mexico.Thomas Kanewakeron Gray, 19, and Lloyd Skanahwati Gray, 17, had driven up to Denver to stay with a friend the day before the tour, their mother said. Thomas is a freshman at Northern New Mexico College and had been hoping to transfer to CSU, his mother said, and Lloyd is a senior at Santa Fe Indian School."They scraped together their dollars, made arrangements themselves to register for the campus tour, and took the only car we have and drove up there," Gray said. "That enough was worrisome – for our teenage boys to take our car and get on a big highway and drive seven hours to another unknown place.""And how it ended was even worse," she added.The staffers were aware the two young men were supposed to be on the tour, Gray said, and she said that another parent of a student on the tour called police because the boys were being too quiet.Once police arrived, the boys showed them their reservation for the tour and were let go. But Thomas called his mother, who said she was frantic because the boys couldn't find the group again.“Right then, that was just a big red flag for me. When you think about young men of color being shot all over the place, or being arrested…I said, ‘Just get in the car and come home,’” she said. “They’d missed a day of school for this campus tour only to be pushed aside because of some woman’s fears.”She said an officer told the young men they should learn to speak up for themselves.“Why should it be a crime for a person to remain silent and choose not engage in conversation? They were still taking in the information, and that was their right. And for the police officer to say that, that was bothersome to me," Gray said.She said she has been in ongoing conversations with CSU administrators about the incident, but said her sons were "shamed.""It breaks my heart, because they didn't do anything to warrant that," she said. "They're walking on their own ancestors' land, so it breaks my heart."“This incident is sad and frustrating from nearly every angle, particularly the experience of two students who were here to see if this was a good fit for them as an institution,” wrote Vice President for Enrollment and Access Leslie Taylor, Vice President for Diversity Mary Ontiveros and Vice president for Student Affairs Blanche Hughes.“The fact that these two students felt unwelcome on our campus while here as visitors runs counter to our Principles of Community and the goals and aspirations of the CSU Police Department, even as they are obligated to respond to an individual’s concern about public safety, as well as the principles of our Office of Admissions,” they continued.The officials said they had reached out to the men’s families and would be meeting to discuss how a similar incident can be prevented and better responded to in the future.Denver7's Mikayla Ortega contributed to this report. 3669

So, we'll literally light up the internet,” Nosanchuk said.And while you may not be able to give gifts in person this year, you can still offer the traditional monetary Hanukkah gift virtually.But this year, Nosanchuk is asking families to focus ways to build a more peaceful and just society.“Whatever faith you may be representing, I hope you'll know that your Jewish neighbors are holding their Hanukkah menorah by the window to publicize that miracles do happen,” Nosanchuk said. “I pray strongly that we'll all be healed. For companies hiring right now, ensuring you're hiring the most qualified candidate can be tricky. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way businesses approach hiring and are forcing them to recruit remotely. "Everything we’ve always done previously has been in person. It’s always been encouraged to do in-person, face-to-face communication. From a job seeker's perspective, obviously, it helps to be in-person and kind of take their facial cues and whatnot, so we really had to change everything we were doing," says Erik Cherkaski with the Fresno Regional Workforce Development Board. Cherkaski says one of his main jobs is to recruit employees for local businesses. Because of the pandemic, their recruiting services are now virtual. Recently, the organization has been holding virtual job fairs for a number of large employers."I think one day we had logistics, so we had some of our local fulfillment centers on. Another day we had the service industry on, so some of the local retailers that were doing mass hiring [participated]. Then, we had a focus on government, as well. So, some of the local and state organizations that were doing some hiring and we had some very good turnout. This was new territory for us," said Cherkaski.Employers held virtual presentations for candidates who tuned in using online meeting platforms like Zoom and Webex. "It was very engaging. We got good feedback from our employers and we are looking to do it again. So that was very positive for us to see that we can do something like this online," said Cherkaski.College students and recent graduates are also finding their first career move by participating in online events. Handshake, which helps connect more than 500,000 employers with college students looking for a job or internship, says it's expanding it's virtual services to accommodate universities who've put their in-person career fairs on hold."There are a lot of opportunities that do still exist even with the change in the economy this particular year. We have so many students across so many different walks of life that are looking in for those opportunities to be able to just jump start their career," said Christine Cruzvergara, with Handshake. To help, Handshake created a new virtual engagement module."That is going to allow employers to be able to actually segment, campaign and reach out to candidates that meet the different criteria and qualifications that they are looking for, across all of our thousands of universities and colleges. They can go beyond the basic qualifications in a virtual fair to be even more tailored around, for example, some of their DEI requirements or their goals," said Cruzvergara.Handshake hopes the new tools not only help employers narrow down the types of students they want to hire, but also helps students. "It's going to allow students to maximize the time they do have in between classes or in-between their part time jobs or things they might be doing other responsibilities or obligations they have," said Cruzvergara.As for how long Fresno Regional Workforce Development Board will be holding their recruiting events virtually, Cherkaski said, "if you were to have asked me this four months ago I would have said, Oh this isn’t going to go on too long but now we're four months in and I suspect were going to be doing this for the foreseeable future."Both Fresno Regional Workforce Development Board and Handshake believe even when COVID-19 restrictions are lifted completely, employers will still want to use virtual recruiting events to widen their candidate search.Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified Christine Cruzvergara's last name. 3693
Four people in attendance at Republican National Convention events in Charlotte this week have tested positive for COVID-19, according to officials in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.In its daily release of COVID-19 data, the county said that two attendees and two people support staff members tested positive for the virus. The four people were "immediately issued isolation instructions," and those who had contact with those infected were also told to isolate.About 800 people in town for the RNC were tested for COVID-19, the country reported.While most of the convention was held virtually this year, Charlotte did host a few RNC events in the city this week. The roll call vote was centered in Charlotte, with some delegates submitting their votes virtually. Both President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence gave speeches Monday in front of about 300 delegates at the Charlotte Convention Center.North Carolina has mandated that masks be worn in indoor public spaces, and RNC leaders agreed to enforce the mandate at the convention. However, county health officials reported to the Charlotte Observer that some in attendance were not wearing masks.President Donald Trump delivered his convention speech in front of about 1,000 supporters on the White House lawn on Thursday. Most of those in attendance were not wearing a mask.
