To know how a pandemic and politics have impacted Nogales, Arizona, Aissa Huerta will tell you to just look around.“It’s another world here, so often, it’s missed,” said Huerta. On the street that’s home to her art gallery, steps from the border, there’s not much to see at all. Morley Avenue is empty, many of the stores are closed.“We don’t have shoppers,” said business owner Evan Kory, who owns La Cinderella. For more than seven decades., Kory's family has owned stores in Nogales. The Arizona border city has a population of around 20,000 people. On the other side of the border wall is Nogales, Mexico, a city with a population of more than 200,000 people.Since March, the Mexican-American border has been closed to non-essential travel. The rules mean Mexican shoppers and the millions of dollars they spend in Arizona must stay on the other side of the wall.Kory says at least 90 percent of his store’s customers are from Mexico.“We’ve always been dependent on population in Mexico to support our local economy, so as soon as that’s cut off, our economy is shut down essentially,” he explained.Air travel isn’t restricted, but policy says people must have an essential reason to drive or walk across the border. For now, the restrictions that have been extended monthly since March, mean Alex La Pierre can’t lead tours across the border for his non-profit, the Border Community Alliance, a group that aims to show how concrete and barbed wire can’t divide two cities with powerful similarities.“The more opportunities that we can get to, citizen to citizen, one on one, to meet our neighbor and to see that we’re all not that scary that we have a lot of common interests,” La Pierre said.“The worst part is we can’t share what we love about this area,” said Chef Minerva Orduno Rincon, who has led tours with BCA, using food to create a connection across the border. In this part of Arizona, it’s less about what’s considered Mexican or American.“Really it feels like one whole city here, just divided by a fence,” said Nogales high schooler Ingrid Torres. Many of Torres’ friends live and Mexico and she hasn’t seen them since the pandemic began. For locals like Aissa Huerta, the closer you live to the border, the easier it can be to see through the narratives about immigration often written by those who live far away.“You hear about the worst-case scenario or the drug busts or immigration, so you hear the atrocities of this area without ever getting the opportunity for residents here to tell their story or what it's like to live on the border of two different nations,” Huerta said. 2604

Three firefighters died Thursday while battling two separates blazes, one in Pennsylvania and the other in New York.On Thursday night, a New York City firefighter died during a five-alarm fire in Harlem on the set of the film "Motherless Brooklyn."Michael Davidson, 37, died of injuries in the blaze that broke out in the cellar of an unoccupied building, Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro said in a press conference."To our great sorrow, we now know that a NYC firefighter lost his life battling the blaze that grew, and our hearts ache in solidarity with his family," producers of the film said in a statement.Edward Norton is the film's director, and Bruce Willis and Alec Baldwin are among the cast, according to Internet Movie Database. The fire broke out as the film crew wrapped up shooting for the day, according to the producers' statement. "We watched firsthand with astonishment as (firefighters) charged into the smoke to make sure all were safely out and then fought to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading, putting their lives on the line as they do every day," it said. The fire spread rapidly, forcing firefighters to back out of the building. During that time, Davidson became separated from the rest of the unit, Nigro said.Davidson was found unconscious after a desperate search. He was transported to Harlem Hospital, where he later died.Davidson had been with the New York City Fire Department for 15 years and was cited for bravery four times, according to the fire agency's Facebook post. He is survived by his wife, Eileen, and four children. Davidson's father is a retired firefighter and had also worked in the same firehouse, Nigro said. Two other firefighters were seriously injured with burns and taken to Weill Cornell Burn Center; others had less serious injuries, Nigro said. 1820

TIJUANA, Mexico (KGTV) - Hundreds of kids are waiting at shelters in Mexico, unable to get their asylum application processed, according to lawyers. They came with the migrant caravan in November. "Really quite brave of them to go through all of that," Lawyer Kara Lynum said. Lynum traveled to Tijuana with fellow lawyers from around the country in December. While in the shelter during their five day stay, she says they saw huge gaps in resources for the kids, prompting them to create a GoFundMe page."So the money is going directly to Al Otro Lado, so they're going to use it to fund those needs, they're going to hire a teacher. They're going to hire a trauma counselor for the kids, enhance security in the shelter and then hopefully hire a lawyer too," Lynum said one of the biggest issues is getting kids' applications processed."There's that list for asylum seekers, and the kids can't get on that list," saying change needs to happen, "for the children, in particular, they should be able to walk up to the Port of Entry and start the process of asylum."The roadblock, the law states anyone under 18 must have a guardian, to ensure the child is acting under their own free will."To know the background of this minor, I mean there's arguments that some of these kids are being trafficked. We don't know exactly where are there parents?" Immigration Specialist and Lawyer Lilia Velasquez said.Lynum said many of the kids she encountered have relatives in the U.S. Velasquez said the kids' parents have to sign over Power of Attorney, "the minor brings an ID with a photo, the relative brings also an ID, maybe birth certificates, then they can verify if those kids belong to that family."Back home in Minnesota Lynum thinks about the kids she met, wondering how they're faring, "I think about being 17 and a girl and you're by yourself and taking all of that on, is a big ask for these kids." 1907

There are more than 50 deaths per year in the U.S. that happen during police encounters with people carrying toy firearms. In an effort to prevent it from happening in Sioux City, Iowa, city council members there have voted to adopt an ordinance that bans some toy guns from being carried. The Associated Press reports Police Captain Mark Kirkpatrick said officers have had multiple encounters with replica weapons. They are faced with the question of whether to use deadly force in those situations. The toy weapons ban in Sioux City includes pellet and BB guns. The ban does not cover Nerf or squirt guns, or guns that shoot suction-cup darts, the AP reports. 676

Traveling now carries with it more uncertainty than ever before. If you plan on traveling anytime soon, one thing you can do to protect yourself is get a trip insurance policy that includes coronavirus coverage. Previously, many insurers excluded COVID-related claims due to the virus’ status as a foreseen event/pandemic. But now, some insurers are changing their tune. Here’s what you need to know about how to find travel insurance providers that offer coronavirus-related coverage, as well as what is and isn’t covered. What is coveredCoronavirus coverage falls into several categories:Trip cancellation: You need to cancel a trip prior to departure because you, a covered travel companion or possibly someone you need to care for contracted COVID-19.Trip delay: Your trip is delayed due to changing COVID-related guidelines.Travel medical coverage: You (or a covered travel companion) become ill with COVID-19 while traveling abroad and incur health care expenses or require an evacuation.Of providers that are offering COVID policies, most are covering these expenses. What is not coveredCountries with Level 4 travel advisories: Some insurers disclose that if a Level 4 Do Not Travel advisory is issued by the U.S. Department of State for a specific country, you will not receive coronavirus-related coverage. With cases surging in various countries unexpectedly, the list of Level 4 countries is constantly changing. Before booking a trip and purchasing a policy, make sure to check that the countrydoes not have a Level 4 advisory.Fear of getting sick while traveling: Canceling a trip because you’re afraid you’ll get sick does not qualify for coverage under your travel insurance policy. Travel insurance providers have a list of standard reasons that qualify for cancellation, including: car accident, jury duty, terrorist act, military duty and other extenuating circumstances. If you want ultimate flexibility to cancel a trip (no matter the reason), you’ll want to look into the cancel for any reason, or CFAR, supplemental upgrade, which is offered on some travel insurance plans. When you purchase CFAR, you can get up to 75% of your nonrefundable deposit back as long as you cancel at least two days in advance. Not all plans offer CFAR as an option, so research before you purchase if you’re interested in this add-on.COVID-related events not directly related to you: If you planned on going to a conference or a family reunion that was canceled due to COVID-associated concerns, your travel insurer will not reimburse your nonrefundable flight or hotel accommodations.Finding travel insurers covering COVID-19Generally, the policies underwritten by U.S.-based travel insurance providers vary by state, trip information, travelers’ ages and other various details. Travel insurance comparison site Squaremouth is one of the very few comparison sites that allow you to filter by policies that offer coronavirus coverage. To find a policy that specifically covers coronavirus-related losses, input your departure and return dates, your main destination and select “Search for Policies Now.”In our example, we will input the following details: A ,000 paid-in-full trip to Greece leaving on Oct. 9 and returning on Oct. 18 by a 40-year old U.S. citizen who is a resident of California. The policy will include trip cancellation coverage. When incorporating the “Coronavirus Pandemic” filter, the results reveal that 40 out of 84 policies include this coverage. You can select additional filters, such as cancel for any reason, if you’re looking for that optional upgrade. The results can be sorted by price, top sellers, top reviews and insurance providers, offering plenty of ways to easily search for the specific policy you’re looking for. Each of the top three policies (which is just a sampling of the 40 options) includes coronavirus cancellation and medical coverage, and displays the associated limits. Trip cancellation coverage is ,000, representing the value of the trip. The price of the policy is clearly stated and ranges from 4.1% to 5.4% of the total trip cost. This range represents very typical travel insurance costs. The bottom lineOnce you narrow your search, you’ll want to review the full policy details to ensure you’re familiar with what exactly is covered and not covered. If you have specific questions — especially as they relate to the constantly changing travel advisories or whether coronavirus is considered as a foreseen event (which some providers will not cover) — you’ll want to reach out to the insurer. The last thing you want is to purchase travel insurance and later find out it will not cover you in your intended destination.More From NerdWalletWhy You Shouldn’t Book Airfare in Advance Right NowShould I Pay for My Hotel Using Cash, Points or Both?5 Travel Writers ‘Draft’ Their Favorite AirlinesElina Geller is a writer at NerdWallet.
