SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 2,686 new COVID-19 infections -- the 26th consecutive day with more than 1,000 cases.On Saturday, there were no new virus-related deaths reported.Saturday was the 18th day with more than 2,000 new cases.Another 35 people also were hospitalized, according to Saturday's data, and another two were sent to intensive care units.The county's cumulative cases increased to 142,647 and the death toll remained at 1,402.Nine new community outbreaks were confirmed on Friday. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Prescription Drug Task Force and a group of local political and law enforcement leaders released the task force's annual report card Friday, showing increases in deaths due to prescription drugs and the synthetic opioid fentanyl.The county report found that 273 San Diego residents died due to prescription drug overdoses, an 8 percent increase over the 253 deaths in 2016, and fentanyl deaths spiked 155 percent from 33 in 2016 to 84 in 2017. Heroin deaths dropped by five percent, from 91 in 2016 to 86 in 2017."Prescription drug abuse is an equal opportunity killer and can affect anyone, crossing socioeconomic status, ethnicity, gender and age," said County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar, who joined the task force at the release. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The driver of a minivan was sought this morning for leaving the scene of a Middletown hit-and-run that left a 66-year-old bicyclist hospitalized with a life-threatening head injury, police said.The victim was riding near the intersection of India and West Washington streets at 1:30 p.m. Friday when he was struck by a blue or gray 2005 Dodge Caravan, Georgia license number RRJ7004. The vehicle may have a shattered windshield or front-end damage, according to San Diego police.Following the collision, the driver of the minivan fled, possibly back toward Interstate 5, police said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Kmart store in Spring Valley is among 46 unprofitable outlets slated to start closeout sales this week, according to an announcement from the Sears Holding Corp.Five stores in California are among the 12 Kmart and 33 Sears stores slated to close by November.
