CLAIREMONT MESA EAST (CNS) - A 63-year-old man driving a Cadillac slammed into a 25-year-old motorcyclist in the Clairemont Mesa East neighborhood, breaking the younger man's femur and causing other serious injuries -- which not considered life-threatening, police said today.The 2008 Cadillac CTS was exiting a shopping center driveway when it struck the victim at 5:40 p.m. Saturday, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.But the Cadillac kept going -- traveling south until it smashed into an apartment gate.The 2018 Honda sport bike ended up in the bushes at a different apartment complex, Heims said.The San Diego Police Traffic Division is investigating, although they said a sobriety check cleared the Cadillac driver of possible DUI charges.Anyone with information about the crash is asked to called the SDPD at 619-531-2000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-580-8477. 908

CLAIREMONT, Calif. (KGTV) -- A warning for the next time you drop a piece of mail in a postal collection box: a local thief may be getting creative to grab your mail.Around 7 pm Monday, along Mt. Everest Blvd, Dennis Fipps walked a few blocks from his home and dropped off a driver's license renewal in the blue box.The next morning, Fipps says a neighbor showed up at this door with his empty envelope.   In all, he believes that neighbor found torn mail strewn in the gutter for 8 to 10 neighbors. "I thought 'Omigosh! The check,'" said Fipps.     The check was made out to the DMV for . In the past several years, 10news has reported on stolen checks being washed: a chemical solution dissolving away the ink, allowing a thief to fill in the blanks.     Fipps called his bank and stopped the check, then headed to the post office. "Their response was that the box had been fished," said Fipps.     In that fishy tactic, the fishing line is often a simple string, connected to a rodent glue trap, allowing the thief to grab onto envelopes and pull them out of the collection box.    "It's dastardly.  I'll say that much," said Fipps. Postal officials say 'fishing' is not common, but it does happen in the area. A spokesperson tells 10news almost all the local boxes have anti-fishing security measures, and they will now be looking at this collection box to see what went wrong. CITRUS COUNTY, Florida — A Florida social studies teacher has been "removed" from the classroom after being accused in a recent Huffington Post article of having a white nationalist podcast and secretly bringing her beliefs into the classroom. Dayanna Volitich has worked at Crystal River Middle School in Citrus County since 2016, but online she used the pseudonym Tiana Dalichov."I get to talk about topics that people don't like to talk about. They don't want to be seen as a bigot, racist, whatever you want to call it. I honestly don't care," said Volitich.That's a snippet from the podcast "Unapologetic" previewing the topics listeners can expect to hear. The Huffington Post article says the podcast is actually hosted by the 25-year-old Volitich. In one of her podcasts, she talks about putting on a "dog and pony show" for administrators during her first year, when it comes to teaching certain curriculum. "I told the kids that. I said, 'Guys, when they are in here, I’m going to be different than I usually am. I just don’t want you to be shocked. I want you to play along and they’re like, 'OK. OK,'" she said in the podcast.During that same podcast, Volitich brings up a science fair project from Sacramento that was taken down after she says people deemed it racist. She tells her guest she believes it scientifically proves certain races have higher IQs than others. When her guest asks if kids tell their parents what they learn in class, she says the principal approached her over an email from a parent once, but dropped it. "I had one at the beginning of this year who emailed the principal over my head and basically told her I’m worried that your teacher is injecting political bias into her teaching. And the principal came to me and she was like, 'I’m not worried, should I be worried?' And I was like, 'No.' She believed me and she backed off."Scripps stations WFTS stopped by Volitich's apartment to talk with her, but no one answered the door. A neighbor said he recognizes her by the photo showed to him, but said he rarely spoke with her.The Huffington Post took screen shots of things Volitich posted to Twitter in the past, talking about her fascination of the "Jewish Question" an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory. COPPER CENTER, Alaska – A hunter was killed by a grizzly bear in a national park in Alaska.The National Park Service (NPS) says it happened Sunday at Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve in the southeastern part of the state.According to NPS, the hunter was on a 10-day moose hunt with a friend when the bear attacked near the Chisana River drainage.Specific injuries in the attack have not been disclosed, but it appears nobody else was harmed during the incident.Officials say this is the first known bear mauling fatality recorded at the park since it was established in 1980.“Visitors are encouraged to be Bear Aware when traveling in the backcountry and take precautions such as carrying bear spray and using Bear Resistant Food Containers (BRFC),” wrote NPS in a statement. “The park also encourages hunters to read Bear Safety for Hunters located on the ADF&G website.”The identity of the deceased hunter is being withheld pending investigation, NPS says. 979
