Students watching the COVID-19 pandemic play out have reason to be wary of taking on additional loans for college. With what could be a slow economic recovery, signing up for an additional bill that comes each month, no matter what, might sound like a bad idea.Federal student loan payments are currently paused. But those repayments are scheduled to resume next year before current students can take advantage of the halt. And while government income-based repayment plans and forbearance can offer a respite for economic hardships, interest still continues to add up. Private loans are even less forgiving and almost always require a co-signer.But there’s an alternative emerging: income share agreements, or ISAs. With these agreements, students borrow money from their school or a third-party provider and repay a fixed percentage of their future income for a predetermined amount of time after leaving school.Depending on the terms of the agreement and the student’s post-graduation salary, the total repaid could be much more or far less than the amount borrowed. It’s a gamble that could be worth it for students who’ve exhausted federal aid and scholarships. Here’s why.No co-signer requiredMost students need a co-signer to qualify for private student loans. Co-signers are on the hook for any missed payment, and a large balance can be a burden on their credit report. As families look to make ends meet, they may need that borrowing leverage for themselves.Income share agreements are co-signer-free. Instead of credit history, students typically get an ISA based on their year in school and major. The best terms are often reserved for students in high-earning majors near graduation, like seniors studying STEM fields. But high earners also risk having to repay a larger amount.If an income share agreement isn’t the right fit for you and you need additional funding without a co-signer, consider a private student loan designed for independent students. These loans are often based on your earning potential and don’t require co-signers. They may also offer flexible repayment options based on salary or career tenure.Unemployment safety netWith an income share agreement, if you’re unemployed — or if your salary falls below a certain threshold, which can be as low as ,000 or as high as ,000 — you don’t make payments. No interest accrues, and the term of your agreement doesn’t change.That makes these agreements a good option for students in times of economic uncertainty, says Ken Ruggiero, chairman and CEO of consumer finance company Goal Structured Solutions, which is the parent company of student loan providers Ascent and Skills Fund and provides funding for school-based ISAs.“I like the idea of not having to make a payment when you’re going into a recession or right after the recovery happened,” he says.If you’re a junior, senior or graduate student poised to enter the workforce soon, that could make an income share agreement more attractive. Tess Michaels, CEO of income share agreement provider Stride Funding, says she’s seen a significant increase in inquiries since the pandemic forced schools to shut down in March.But freshmen and sophomores have more time to wait out the economic fallout. If you’re further from starting your career, weigh the recession-related benefits of an income share agreement against the risk of giving up a percentage of your future income. Remember, you won’t know the total cost of an ISA when you sign up.But it’s not right for all studentsSome colleges offer income share agreements to all students regardless of major or tenure. Still, many of these programs prioritize upperclassmen, making it harder for freshmen and sophomores to qualify.But an income share agreement might be the wrong move even if you’re graduating soon. If your income is higher than average after graduation, you might pay much more than you received.Let’s say you get ,000 from a private ISA company and agree to pay 9% of your salary for five years. If you earn ,000 a year (the average starting salary for a college graduate) for the length of your term, you’ll repay ,950. That is equivalent to a 10.6% interest rate. In that case, a private student loan could be a better option. Fixed rates on private student loans are hovering around 4%, though independent students will likely pay more.And income share agreements have fewer protections for borrowers than student loans. Sticking to a normal daily rhythm -- being active during the day and sleeping at night -- can have more benefits than you might expect.A new study found that it is linked to improvements in mood and cognitive functioning as well as a decreased likelihood of developing major depression and bipolar disorder.The study, published Tuesday in the journal The Lancet Psychiatry, looked at disruptions in the circadian rhythms -- or daily sleep-wake cycles -- of over 91,000 adults in the United Kingdom. It measured these disruptions using a device called an accelerometer that is worn on the wrist and measures one's daily activity levels. The participants were taken from the UK Biobank, a large cohort of over half a million UK adults ages 37 to 73.The researchers found that individuals with more circadian rhythm disruptions -- defined as increased activity at night, decreased activity during the day or both -- were significantly more likely to have symptoms consistent with bipolar disorder or major depression. They were also more likely to have decreased feelings of well-being and to have reduced cognitive functioning, based on a computer-generated reaction time test.For all participants, activity levels were measured over a seven-day period in either 2013 or 2014, and mental health proxies such as mood and cognitive functioning were measured using an online mental health questionnaire that participants filled out in 2016 or 2017."It's widely known that a good night's sleep is a good thing for well-being and health. That's not a big surprise," said?Dr. Daniel Smith, professor of psychiatry at the University of Glasgow and a leading author on the study. "But I think what's less well-known and what comes out of this work is that not only is a good night's sleep important, but having a regular rhythm of being active in daylight and inactive in darkness over time is important for mental well-being."The findings were found to be consistent even when controlling for a number of influential factors including age, sex, lifestyle, education and body mass index, according to Smith."I think one of the striking things that we found was just the consistency in the direction of our association across everything we looked at in terms of mental health," Smith said.Daily circadian rhythm is controlled by a collection of neurons in an area of the brain called the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus helps regulate a number of important behavioral and physiological functions such as body temperature, eating and drinking habits, emotional well-being and sleep, according to the?National Institute of General Medical Sciences.The findings are consistent with research indicating a link between sleep disruptions and mood disorders. A 2009 study, for example, showed that men who worked night shifts for four years or more were more likely to have anxiety and depression than those who work during the day.However, the new study is the first to use objective measurements of daily activity and is among the largest of its kind, according to?Aiden Doherty, senior research fellow at the University of Oxford, who was not involved in the research."This study is the first large-scale investigation of the association of objectively measured circadian rhythmicity with various mental health, well-being, personality and cognitive outcomes, with an unprecedented sample size of more than 90 000 participants," Doherty wrote in an email."Previous studies have been very small (in just a few hundred people), or relied on self-report measures (asking people what they think they do). ... However, this study used objective device-based measures in over 90,000 participants; and then linked this information to standard measures of mood disorders, subjective well-being, and cognitive function," he added.The findings have significant public health consequences, particularly for those who live in urban areas, where circadian rhythms are often disrupted due to artificial light, according to Smith."By 2030, two-thirds of the world's population will be living in cities, and we know that living in an urban environment can be pretty toxic to your circadian system because of all the artificial light that you're exposed to," Smith said."So we need to think about ways to help people tune in to their natural rhythms of activity and sleeping more effectively. Hopefully, that will protect a lot of people from mood disorders."For those who struggle to maintain a consistent circadian rhythm, certain strategies -- such as avoiding technology at night -- have proven to be an important part of good sleep hygiene."Not using your phone late at night and having a regular pattern of sleeping is really important," Smith said. "But equally important is a pattern of exposing yourself to sunshine and daylight in the morning and doing activity in the morning or midday so you can actually sleep properly."Based on the observational nature of the study, the researchers were unable to show causality, meaning it is unclear whether the sleep disturbances caused the mental health problems or vice versa."It's a cross-sectional study, so we can't say anything about cause and effect or what came first, the mood disorder or the circadian disruption," said Kristen Knutson, associate professor of neurology at Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine, who was not involved in the study."And it's likely they affect each other in a circular fashion," she added.The researchers also looked exclusively at adults between age 37 and 73, meaning the results may not apply to younger individuals, whose circadian rhythms are known to be different than those of older adults, according to Smith."The circadian system changes throughout life. If you've got kids, you know that very young kids tend to be nocturnal," Smith said. "My suspicion is that we might observe even more pronounced effects in younger samples, but that hasn't been done yet, to my knowledge."But the study adds more credence to the idea that sleep hygiene -- including maintaining a consistent pattern of sleep and wake cycles -- may be an important component of good mental health, according to Smith."It's an exciting time for this kind of research because it's beginning to have some real-world applications," Smith said. "And from my point of view as a psychiatrist, I think it's probably under-recognized in psychiatry how important healthy circadian function is, but it's an area that we're trying to develop." 6496
Ten female Mcdonald's current and former employees have filed sexual harassment complaints against the company over the past week.One worker in Chicago said that a McDonald's supervisor at the franchise store retaliated against her by reducing her hours when she reported instances of sexual harassment by management. Another Chicago worker at a franchise said she was fired soon after reporting that a manager had made sexually explicit comments to her.A third individual in St. Louis, who is 15 years old, said she was repeatedly harassed by an older employee every Sunday for two months. The employee commented on her appearance and sexually propositioned her, she said. The employee added that reports of the incidents were not taken seriously by a superior at the company-owned store, and the harassment did not end until she stopped working on Sundays.A 20-year-old woman in Durham, North Carolina, said that she was sexually harassed by co-workers and supervisors. She also said she was subjected to a hostile work environment at the company-owned store because she is black. The woman said she was made fun of by colleagues after reporting the behaviors and she eventually stopped turning to management.The complaints were filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in seven states, including Michigan, Florida and Louisiana. TAMPA, Fla. -- A former Tampa Bay Lightning player is on his way to becoming a sworn firefighter for the city of Tampa.“I think it’s very similar to the teamwork, the bond together, the brotherhood. It keeps you in shape and it’s very important for us to keep people safe and I want to be a hero to my children,” said Nikita Alekseev.Alekseev is a former first-round draft pick for the Lightning. Since then, he’s studied, graduated from the fire academy, has had EMT training and is finishing his final days of recruit training for Tampa Fire Rescue over the next week.“I have a lot of friends in the service here. I’ve been in the stations throughout my career just visiting and I’m a big community guy so I really like to help the people of the city,” he said.On Thursday, he said his focus was on consistency and efficiency.“Obviously, we’re just starting out so I want to get as much info on every little situation where it’s gonna help me to save my life and my crew. It’s very important to listen to what the instructor’s saying,” he said.The city’s new hires ran through engine company operations, practicing with the fire hose, going through a building and putting water on a building.“It doesn’t matter how big you are, how strong you are, you have to have a technique. It’s a lot of water and you can’t win it. So a lot of good instructors showed me how to do the right things, how to position yourself right and so it helps a lot,” Alekseev said.His fellow recruits include newcomers and legacies, everyone starting from the same place no matter their background.“What I hope is they take the training out here, bring it to the street, continue the training to continue gaining experience, knowledge and becoming a well rounded professional firefighter,” said Tampa Fire Rescue Captain Dan Quatrino.Alekseev and 14 others are part of the department’s first recruit class during the pandemic.“It makes a lot of the day to day operations we do unique and new to all of us,” said Quatrino.After finishing their final days of training, they’ll be sworn in next week.“It’s a small step to achievement, I guess.
