(KGTV) - A NASA astronaut with a special tie to San Diego is preparing for her trip to the International Space Station. Wednesday morning, 10News Anchor Jim Patton spoke to Dr. Jessica Meir, who earned her Doctorate in Marine Biology at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. She’ll be taking her first space flight as part of the next crew going to the ISS. "There is definitely a Scripps Institution of Oceanography flag as well as some other items from San Diego," said Astronaut Jessica Meir, speaking from Star City, Russia, where she's been training for the past year and half. She'll be applying her scientific skills to a myriad of experiments some 250 miles above the earth. "We will be on board for about six months,” said Meir. “That's the average length of a space station mission these days. And we will be conducting all kinds of scientific investigations, ranging from how our blood vessels and arteries are actually thickening and stiffening in response to the spaceflight environment. And how it affects all of our physiological systems." Meir says the research is part of the quest to send humans to Mars. Much of the work is at the leading edge of science but some is as practical as your kitchen. "Do we have a progress for trash?" Meir can be seen asking a fellow crew member as they train on a mock-up of the space station. "Where do you think we're keeping trash right now?" While very down to earth, Meir says all the training is very necessary. "When we have anything that breaks, like a toilet or need to change a light bulb, we can't call a plumber or electrician. We have to do all that stuff ourselves as well." Of course, all of this amid a little background fact: it requires the guts to blast-off from the comforts of Earth into the ultimate hostile environment of space. "How do you have the courage inside to do something like that,” asked Patton. "I think the biggest answer is the amazing training here on the ground," answered Meir. "The teams in Houston, all over NASA, and here in Russia as well. They prepare us for any situation." Jessica Meir and her crew are scheduled to take off from Russia on Sept. 25. Users went into a panic Sunday afternoon when the landscape in the game blew up, dragging players into a black hole. They were left watching a mostly dark screen and a spinning black hole, with no way to play.Fortnite's latest chapter features an all-new island with new weapons. Developer Epic Games released a trailer that quickly garnered excitement among its rabid fans.Fortnite is one of the most widely played video games. Even during the weekend's outage, roughly 100,000 people were watching a livestream of the black hole on Twitch. Rod Breslau, an esports and gaming consultant, estimates that millions of gamers in total tuned in just for that.Several Twitch channels were carrying the new chapter live on Tuesday, with the most popular channel garnering nearly 100,000 viewers. (KGTV) — Disney is delaying plans to reopen Disneyland and California Adventure in July, saying state guidelines will not be issued soon enough to prepare its parks to welcome back guests.Earlier this month, Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure Park were slated to reopen on July 17 after being shuttered since March. Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel plan were to reopen on July 23. The company now says guidelines from the state are not expected "until sometime after July 4.""Given the time required for us to bring thousands of cast members back to work and restart our business, we have no choice but to delay the reopening of our theme parks and resort hotels until we receive approval from government officials," a company statement read.Downtown Disney is still scheduled to reopen in Anaheim on July 9 with health and safety precautions in place, according to the company. Disney said Downtown Disney's reopening had been previously approved under California's restaurant and retail guidelines for reopening."Once we have a clearer understanding of when guidelines will be released, we expect to be able to communicate a reopening date," the statement said in regards to the parks.Disney added that is has signed agreements from 20 union affiliates representing cast members to return employees to work at the theme parks.The company's plans to reopen California parks mirror that of its parks that have reopened in Florida and China. Disney said the parks will plan to limit attendance using a reservation system in order to prevent overcrowd and encourage distancing between guests. Park experiences like parades, nighttime shows, and character meet-and-greets would also be temporarily suspended. Characters will still roam around the park, Disney said."Because theme park capacity will be significantly limited to comply with governmental requirements and promote physical distancing, the Disneyland Resort will manage attendance through a new theme park reservation system that will require all guests, including Annual Passholders, to obtain a reservation for park entry in advance," the park said on its official blog. "Once approved, the Disneyland Resort will reopen with enhanced health and safety measures. (KGTV) - A Pennsylvania groom is accused of sexually assaulting one of his wife’s bridesmaids days before his wedding, which occurred as scheduled. Daniel Carney, 28, is charged with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse of an unconscious person and indecent assault at the Smithfield resort Aug. 30. Police said the assault reportedly happened after Carney and the bridesmaid were drinking alcohol. The bridesmaid told officers she blacked out, and when she regained consciousness her clothes were removed and Carney was fondling her. Surveillance video shows Carney pulling the woman into the men’s locker room, police said. According to police, the assault stopped when the bride caught him, but the wedding went on as planned Sept. 1. Court documents show investigators listened in on a call between Carney and his accuser, KABC reported.
