BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- China hopes for talks with the Philippines on the South China Sea issue at an early date, a spokesperson said on Wednesday.

He also met with Chinese top legislator Zhang Dejiang and top political advisor Yu Zhengsheng in Beijing on Monday and is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday, said Liu.

They also reaffirmed their shared commitment to maintaining and promoting peace, security and stability in the region, as well as to the peaceful resolution of disputes, including full respect for legal and diplomatic processes, without resorting to the threat or use of force, in accordance with the universally recognized principles of international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Yu focused on learning about the personnel from "new social strata" and people engaged in non-public economic sectors during his visit.

"We hope this positive gesture will be followed by real actions and that the Philippines will return to the track of negotiation at an early date, work with China to properly manage differences and jointly maintain the peace and stability of the South China Sea," he concluded.
