Six years later after being shot in the head, Balaal Hollings continues to inspire others. Taking a look back at his story, Hollings already faced hardship in high school when his mother died. Through it all, he surprised his school class by not only graduating, but walking at his commencement ceremony. Hollings spoke about his gratitude to God and the work he had to do to relearn how to walk and talk. The video went viral across the nation. But Hollings’ struggles weren’t over. “I didn’t think I would make it at times,” Hollings said. It's popular with tourists because it's easy to get to. It's a short walk from where they park. "So I don’t try. I’m the old guy out here, I know what I'm seeing."He says winters don't see the snow they did when he first became a guide in Alaska in the '90s. He no longer does snowshoeing and ice hiking tours in the winter because of the lack of snow.“It’s changed our business," he says. "I don’t know if it’s hurt it. I would say we’ve adapted. SHOREWOOD, Wis. — A Wisconsin physical education teacher has been placed on leave after allegedly telling African-American students to reenact slavery and "slavery games."April 1 was a typical day in gym class at Shorewood Intermediate School until seventh-grader Alexis Averette says she was assigned an odd game by PE instructor Jan Zehren. “Ms. Zehren forced me and my partner to reenact slavery in front of the entire class," she said. "When we told her we were uncomfortable she told us we still had to do it."While some students presented dodge ball, others say they were paired up by race and told to reenact "slavery games." When Alexis and her partner proposed another game, the students say they were told it was too common.When Alexis told her parents, her mother and father were shocked. “She came home and she told me she had to reconstruct games ever played during slavery," said Alexis's father, Yuri Averette. "Yeah, I was completely shocked. I knew it was a problem immediately when she said she was uncomfortable."Averette and other parents voiced their concerns to the school. In response, Zehren was escorted out of building and placed on leave.Zehren has taught physical education in the Shorewood School District for 36 years. The school district sent a letter to students and parents saying they were investigating. Parents like Averette are seeking justice and want Zehern fired.“We don’t want (that) here and that’s not just for my child but for any other child. TAMPA, Fla. — While spring breakers head to beach communities, some Florida cities are enacting extra measures amid coronavirus concerns. In some areas of Fort Lauderdale, public beaches are closing daily at 4:30 p.m. and bars and restaurants must close before 10 p.m. Miami Beach reportedly enacted similar measures with an 11 p.m. curfew for bars and restaurants, as well as 4:30 p.m. beach closures, including on South Beach. Other states are closing bars and limiting restaurants to take-out only. Florida Governor Ron Desantis praised city leaders for the move and said he'd like to see other beach communities implement the same measures. "I think it’s important that these social distancing measures are implemented so that we are able to prevent infections from running completely out of hand," he said during a news conference Sunday. The concerns surrounding the virus didn't keep people away from Clearwater Beach over the weekend and on Monday, though. "I have auto immune diseases and I am a senior. But I really think as long as I’m very safe and I wash my hands constantly, I will be safe and my family will be safe," said Tricia Wood.
