Budnitz, MD, MPH, director of the CDC's Medication Safety Program.And the four types of medication -- two for diabetes and two blood-thinning agents -- account for two-thirds of those drug-related emergency hospitalizations. They most often cited: warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven); insulin; antiplatelet drugs such as aspirin and clopidogrel (Plavix); oral hypoglycemic agents."Both blood thinners and diabetes medicines are critical drugs that can be lifesaving," Budnitz says.However, he says that ''these are medications that you do need to pay attention to," being sure the dose and timing are correct, among other measures.

HAIKOU, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China will actively push forward maritime cooperation with the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in light of the guidelines on conduct in the South China Sea, a Foreign Ministry official has said.Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin made the remarks during an international seminar on implementing the Declaration on Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) and maintaining the navigational freedom and security of the waterway.Early next year, China will hold a senior officials' meeting and working group meeting with ASEAN countries on the implementation of the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), Liu said in an interview with Xinhua on the sideliens of the seminar held in Haikou, Hainan Province, from Dec. 14-15..The senior officials' meeting is a guiding mechanism for implementing the DOC at governmental level. BEIJING, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's economic diplomacy will face growing challenges in the form of trade and exchange rate disputes, as well as the task of protecting overseas investment interests, over the next few years, experts said on Sunday.Next year will be an election year for the Unite States and France, and there is an increasing possibility for the two countries to use the "China threat" as an excuse for not dealing with their own economic issues, which will put Chinese diplomacy under pressure, said Ding Yifan, deputy director of the Institute of World Development of the Development Research Center of the State Council at a seminar on Chinese diplomacy.During the first half of 2012, several countries will remain in a grave debt crisis and may even see their crises deepen, Ding said, adding that this situation may create friction between China, the United States and Europe.Additionally, protecting China's growing overseas investments will pose new challenges for the country's diplomacy, Ding said.Chen Fengying, director of the Institute of World Economic Studies under the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, agreed that the protection of China's overseas investment interests will be an important task for Chinese diplomacy.During the past three decades, China has invested in more than 170 countries and regions, with outbound direct foreign investment topping 170 billion U.S. dollars.In the past 30 years, China has been focused on "bringing in" foreign investment; it may do more to facilitate its "going out" in the future, Chen said.Chinese economic diplomacy will serve the country's economic construction and the protection of its overseas interests, national interests and security, Chen said, adding that China's position in the world is closely related to its economic diplomacy.Chen said China has made several achievements in international economic governance, reflected by China's growing influence in the international arena and the posts held by Chinese officials in important international organizations.

BEIJING, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Pharmaceutical producers will risk having their operation license revoked if they use prohibited chemicals as medicine ingredients or involved in fake drug production, China's drug regulator said in a circular Saturday.The State Food and Drug Administration said it would name and shame pharmaceutical companies if they make phoney medicine and withdraw the operation licenses of pharmacies if they intentionally sell unqualified drugs.The circular came in the wake of several counterfeit medicine scandals uncovered by Chinese police in the past few months.On Nov. 4, police seized more than 65 million imitation medicinal tablets and arrested 114 suspects in a cross-provincial raid on counterfeit drugs.In October, police raided on an illegal drug production and sale network and ended up with the seizure of 190 million yuan (29.9 million U.S. dollars) worth of counterfeit drugs.The suspects were found to have used starch or corn powder as ingredients for bogus medicine, or re-packaged expired pharmaceuticals.Police also found animal feed and chemical pigments in the counterfeit products.
