SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — UC San Diego Health and three other UC Health medical centers will begin to recruit participants for an antiviral drug being tested to treat the novel coronavirus. The medical system will start "phase II" clinical trials for the antiviral drug remdesivir. The drug has "shown activity in animal models and human clinical trials of SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, Ebola, Marburg and other viruses," according to UCSD Health.RELATED: San Diego hospitals start drives for personal protective equipmentRemdesivir is not currently approved for the treatment of any infection by the FDA, but is currently undergoing trials for treating multiple viruses, including COVID-19.“With this type of adaptive study design, if remdesivir proves to be safe and active, the clinical trial may be rapidly adapted to remove the requirement for a placebo arm and add a treatment arm that includes other promising antiviral or other investigational drug to compare with the activity of remdesivir," said co-principal investigator Constance Benson, professor of medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine and an infectious disease specialist at UC San Diego Health.RELATED: Nurse urges people to turn over N95 masks to San Diego hospitalsUC San Francisco, UC Irvine Health, and UC Davis Health are also participating in the trials. The trial is projected to run until April 1, 2023 and involve 440 participants. 1404

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With the lack of housing in San Diego, you need to act fast or you could miss out on a great home. Some San Diegans are getting proactive. They’re not waiting for a home to go up for rent; they’re reaching out to landlords before the property is even available. 10News is sharing a man's creative way to make it San Diego. All it takes is one breathtaking look and the appeal is undeniable. Orange Avenue, The Hotel Del, the Ferry Landing; they all make Coronado irresistible."Coronado is awesome. It's such a small-town feel. People say ‘hi’ to each other. You know your neighbors," said Cory Stock.Stock is a hard-working Surface Rescue Swimmer Instructor for the Navy. He doesn’t have a lot of time to research and look for a new place to live.RELATED: People converting vans to avoid high rent"Lots of swimming, lots of PT," said Stock.Work for Stock is either at Naval Base San Diego or at Naval Base Coronado right on the island. So, Stock decided Coronado would also be a great place to call home. But there was one problem."The turnaround of places is so quick here," said Stock.Knowing anything in his price range might get snatched up in a heartbeat, Stock decided to get proactive and created a post on the Coronado Happenings Facebook page. He was looking for a one or two bedroom rental no later than January 1. It didn't hurt that he threw in the part about being active duty Navy with excellent credit and references, and that he's also a handyman. RELATED: Think we're in a housing crisis? Try this city"The mere fact that you're in the military; it gives you a lot of credit right off the bat," said Stock. In Coronado, being in the military practically means you're already vetted. And it worked. Within weeks Stack and his girlfriend found an affordable home near work, right in the middle of paradise. "Facebook is so big now and social media,” said Stock. “It's a lot easier to get your name out that way to people you'll probably never meet rather than hoping you bump into somebody."Stock moves into his new place at the beginning of the new year. 2097

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two girls were rescued at Sunset Cliffs by teenage bystanders on Friday after being swept out to sea.Local still photographer Jim Grant was hoping to capture the sunset at Sunset Cliffs Friday evening. But he got much more than just a beauty shot."There were some crazy things going on," Grant said.He ended up witnessing a cliff and water rescue."Two young girls ... They looked to be about 12 or 13," Grant said. "They were down at this point, and a large set came in and swept them off their feet.""The older one hit her head probably down on the reef and had a pretty serious head injury in the water," Lt. Andy Lerum with the San Diego Lifeguards said. Before first responders could arrive on the scene, two boys jumped into the water to help the girls. The two teenage boys worked to keep the girls above water until help arrived, lifeguards said, adding that their efforts were instrumental in saving their lives."It was big surf," Grant remembered. "The girls could not swim or couldn't swim very well, that's for sure. And it just could've been a tragic event if those two guys didn't happen to be here."Grant captured dramatic photos of the rescue, showing responders hoist one of the girls from the cliffs. In the end, Grant did get his sunset shot, just with an amazing cliff rescue in the foreground.Lifeguards remind folks that even in exposed reef areas, strong waves could come crashing at any moment. So take extra precautions when going into the water this weekend. 1509

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two San Diego police officers responding to a call for a shoplifter in Ocean Beach ended up buying the suspect clothes and shoes instead of arresting him.It happened on Jan. 6 around 5 a.m. at the location on Sunset Cliffs Blvd. SDPD officers Christian Nimmons and Dominic Collins said employees at the drugstore reported that a homeless man had come in, stolen a sweatshirt and refused to leave. The store declined to press charges but wanted the man out of the store. But knowing it was very cold outside, and seeing the man also didn't have a shirt or socks and shoes, the officers decided to buy them for him."We looked at each other, asked how much the sweatshirt was going to cost, and had the same mutual decision of giving him the sweatshirt," said Collins. Both men told 10News it was simply the right thing to do and part of their job as officers to show compassion for those they come in contact with."I think he was more shocked that cops were doing something for him," Nimmons said. "We couldn't leave him like that. That was really it. It's what we joined to do. To help people."The man, only known to the officers as Daniel, reportedly put on the items and left. 1201
