A toddler hanging from the roof after crawling out of his bedroom window managed to come away unscathed after falling into a passerby's arms. It's a situation that could have ended tragically if not for the quick actions of a good Samaritan.Police report Jill Harper happened to be driving by the 1300 block of Mills Street in Sandusky, Ohio and saw the toddler hanging from the edge of the roof. She ran over to help.According to the police report, the child fell into her arms, and she brought him inside."When I caught him I remember thinking, 'Oh my God, I caught him,'" said Harper."When I started pounding on the house, that's when he fell, and my hand was pounding.  So when he fell, he kind of came back and hit my arm, and then I caught him."Police said they did not notice any obvious bumps and bruises. The Sandusky Fire Department responded to the scene, looked him over and found no injuries.Kelsie Hellman, the boy's mother's cousin, signed a refusal form, not wanting him to be transported to the hospital, according to police.Sandusky police said the boy is currently in the custody of Summit County Children Services. Hellman told police she is trying to gain custody of the boy, whom she has looked after since he was 3 months old.How did he get out there? Hellman told police she was using the bathroom when the incident happened. She said the boy must have gone around the baby gate she put at the bottom of her stairs, allowing him to get up to his room where the window was left slightly open. The boy then apparently slid through the window, which opens onto the roof.Meanwhile, Sandusky Police Detective Kevin Youskievicz told Scripps station WEWS in Cleveland, he believes the child could have suffered serious injuries if Harper hadn't acted quickly."I can only describe her as a hero, she's a hero," Youskievicz said."Everyone says we need heroes, she is one,"According to the report, Hellman said her husband was fixing the window so the boy could not crawl out of it again. 2079

A study published this week takes a look at just how quickly Covid-19 test results are getting back, on average.Researchers surveyed more than 19,000 people across every state and the District of Columbia during the last two weeks of July. They asked how long people waited to get back test results. Most people, about 63 percent, are not getting their test results back within the one-to-two day window that is optimal for contact tracing.More than 30 percent of survey participants reported they received test results after four or more days.“Rapid turnaround of testing for COVID-19 infection is essential to containing the pandemic. Ideally, test results would be available the same day. Our findings indicate that the United States is not currently performing testing with nearly enough speed,” researchers said in the report of their findings. The average wait time nationwide was 4.1 days. However, there were disparities in wait times when looking at race. According to the study, Covid-19 test results wait times for Hispanics and Blacks are longer, at 4.6 days and 5 days respectively. Compared to wait times for white respondents, which was 3.9 days according to the study.Researchers said there is little sign the wait time for test results is speeding up. A similar survey conducted in April found that the national average wait time was 4.2 days. This study did not look into the causes of the delay in receiving test results. Other reporting has pointed to limited testing supplies, labs being overwhelmed with tests to run, and the time needed to contact everyone with results. On Monday, Florida’s Gov. Ron DeSantis called some Covid-19 test results “useless” because they are taking too long to come back. He announced his state is converting two testing locations to 15-minute rapid testing locations. 1823

A photo of a Las Vegas bus driver giving an elderly passenger a sip of water is grabbing attention on Reddit. The photo was posted by Brent Leabu in a subreddit titled "HumansBeingBros." He said that it happened on Monday on Bus 201 near Jones Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue.Leabu says that the bus driver took the water from his own lunch cooler. Although Las Vegas is no longer under an excessive heat warning, it is still very hot in the valley. Monday's high temperature was recorded as 104 degrees with some areas of the valley being hotter and some areas being a couple of degrees cooler.Earlier this month, the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) was handing out free bottled water at various Las Vegas bus stops. And they have done the same in previous years when it has been unusually hot.  821

A new poll found many parents have no plans to get their children the flu shot this year.According to a new report published by C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, 34 percent of U.S. parents say their children are unlikely getting the vaccine this flu season.Dr. Judith Shlay with Denver Public Health says it can be extremely dangerous to opt out of getting the shot. "They can be hospitalized and die from it as we saw last year, and we assume this year will be just as bad as last year," Dr. Shlay says.Of the 1,977 parents polled, the report found 48 percent of the participants said they usually follow the recommendations of their child’s healthcare provider when making decisions about the flu shot. But 21 percent say they don’t remember if their doctor recommended the vaccine. Many adults The NOW spoke with say they don’t remember flu shots being recommended by doctors when they were younger. Dr. Shlay says before the year 2000, they weren't."Before that time period, we were only asking high-risk adults, elderly and at-risk children to get vaccinated," Dr. Shlay explains.Parents says they have their own reasons as to why they don't get their kids flu shots. Some of those reasons include potential side effects, the belief the shot doesn’t work and that their child is healthy and doesn’t need to be vaccinated."You might still get the flu, but by taking the vaccine, you will reduce the disease burden from taking it. It will be a milder infection," Dr. Shlay says.Doctors also recommend not waiting to get the shot.  "Flu activity is high December and January, so the best time to get it is now," Dr. Shlay says. 1648

A rare blue lobster made its way to a Red Lobster restaurant in Ohio recently, and nearly landed on a customer’s dinner plate. But thanks to a sharp-eyed employee, the blue lobster was spotted in the restaurant’s tank.Blue lobsters are incredibly rare – only one out of 2 million lobsters are blue lobsters. The nearby Akron Zoo has since taken over care of the lobster, and is preparing a new home for it.“The blue coloration of the shell is the result of a genetic anomaly,” the Akron Zoo said. The lobster has been given the name “Clawde,” which is said to be the restaurant’s mascot. 593
