OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — 79 years after the surprise attack at Pearl Harbor that brought the United States into World War Two, there are few survivors remaining. However, the memories of that day are crystal clear for 101-year-old Oceanside resident George Coburn.“One of the things I’ll always remember is the time I spent swimming after the Oklahoma turned over," Coburn said during an interview with ABC 10News. "I thought about a lot of things when I was in the water there.”Coburn was aboard the battleship USS Oklahoma on December 7th, 1941. He was working to prepare for a major inspection that was scheduled for the following day. Rumors began circulating belowdecks that the base was under attack. The rumor was confirmed just a few minutes later. "“I still remember the announcement. It was was rather unique. 'Real planes. Real bombs. No [expletive]'The Oklahoma took several hits from Japanese torpedoes. As the battleship began to sink, hundreds of sailors were trapped, including Coburn. He managed to wedge himself out through a porthole. "If I had been a little bit bigger, it would have been a hell of a tough job.”Coburn plummeted several feet into the water below. He found himself surrounded by burning shrapnel. However, he says the most terrifying danger was the continuous fire from Japanese fighters. “I could see the little geysers of machine gun bullets hitting the water.”After a few minutes in the water, Coburn managed to find the rope tying the Oklahoma to the neighboring USS Maryland. He climbed the rope aboard the Maryland and survived the remainder of the attack.Coburn went on to serve in many of the biggest naval actions of the war. He was awarded the Purple Heart after being struck by several pieces of shrapnel during the Battle of Okinawa. Do to a Navy paperwork error, Coburn was never given eight other medals from his service. He finally received the medals in 2019, after a campaign by a Palomar College historian and the intervention of Congressman Mike Levin. Coburn said it did not bother him that it took so long. “I knew what I’d done and where I’d been. The medals didn’t change that a particle.” 2158

But two who walk the halls of Tri-City Medical Center have their own stories of survival."I think every one of us, animal or human, has our own story. We all have our trials and tribulations. And so I think having animals that have been through some difficult times helps them relate with our patients in a much more profound way," said Aaron Byzak, Chief External Affairs Officer for Tri-City Medical Center.Two veterans of the Pet Therapy Program are Prince the poodle and Calamity Jane the golden retriever, one a cancer survivor and the other a trauma survivor. "She's a very strong, strong, little pup, she's got a mind of her own," said Shar Pauley, who rescued Calamity Jane. "And she tells me which rooms she'd like to visit. Sometimes she'll walk down that hallway and then she'll stop and say I think this person needs a visit." The program has been comforting patients for over 20 years now."He's had nine lives, and I think part of his motivation for giving back is he just loves to work, and he loves people," said Mary Gleisberg, Prince's owner. OCEANSIDE (KGTV): A program that offers daily, hot meals to seniors in Oceanside is running out of money and could be forced to close."It’s stressful, it’s super stressful," says Sylvia Spears, the Executive Director of the Oceanside Senior Citizens Association. "I've had sleepless nights, and I’m trying to figure out who do we pay, who do we not pay?"The program gives seniors a hot lunch every day at the Oceanside Senior Citizens Center. For people who can't make it, they also offer home delivery. For a lot of the seniors, it's the only hot meal and the only personal interaction they get all day."We become friends," says Patricia Bonynge, who's been coming to the meals for almost ten years. "Even though we don’t go to each other’s homes or talk on the phone, we come here, and we converse."Bonynge also used the home delivery service for a few months after she had foot surgery and couldn't drive or walk. She says it was a lifeline while she recovered.Spears says the program serves around 50,000 meals every year. That number continues to grow as Americans live longer."Clients are up; donations are down," she says.Right now, the meals are partially funded through a grant from the County. It's part of the Federal "Older Americans Act." The grant is a three-year contract, which expires on December 31st, 2018.But this year, Spears says she decided not to reapply because he hasn't been able to come up with enough money to cover the rest of the budget."Right now we need about 15,000 dollars extra per month to keep going," she says. "That includes our food, kitchen supplies and our trucks."Other organizations, like Meals on Wheels, could step in to fill the gap. Spears is also talking to the City of Oceanside for funding. There's a closed-session City Council meeting Wednesday night to address the issue.The city already lets the Association rent the Senior Center facilities and kitchen for per year. They also work with the San Diego Food Bank to do a monthly food box distribution for seniors who qualify.Despite that, city officials say they realize how important the hot meal program is to older residents."It gives them hope," says City Recreation Supervisor Homer Post. "That hope is what allows them to live until the next day. If you don’t take care of your elderly, you can’t take care of anything that you got going on."Spears is hopeful that someone will come through with a donation to keep the meals going.
