For a Better San Diego initative.The initiative, which will appear on the March ballot, has bipartisan support and seeks to address the city's homelessness issues, street repairs and job creation with a hotel tax increase. Supporters say the initiative would generate 7 million in the first five years. According to San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, the highest hotel tax increase would be in downtown San Diego at 3.2 percent, with 2.25 percent for hotels on the outskirts of downtown and 1.25 percent for hotels on the outskirts of the city.San Diego's current transient occupancy tax is 10.5 percent."It's not only about the thousands of jobs that you just heard, the infrastructure and the roads, the most important issue that is facing our city the issue of homelessness and for the first time a dedicated funding stream," said Faulconer.He said the initiative would also expand the San Diego Convention Center and create 7,000 new jobs.Some tourists tell 10News raising the hotel tax could backfire and make some visitors simply stop coming to San Diego on vacation."It probably means I'll choose somewhere else next time I travel, somewhere more affordable for me," said one tourist who did not want to be identified."I definitely think it's important to deal with the homeless population and expand your economy, but I don't think that should happen with your tourism dollars. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Carlos couple says they were amazed after reaching out to neighbors about gifting some holiday cheer to those in need.Twas the time before Christmas, and the Kvendru home in San Carlos bears similarities to Santa’s workshop."Not a lot of space on the counters. It's like a hoarder home," laughed Renae Kvendru.For Renae Kvendru and her husband David, the journey to this moment began eight holidays ago, when they handed out some 12 Ziploc bags filled with supplies to the homeless. Since then, their efforts have grown slowly every year.This year, they decided to appeal to their neighbors on the Nextdoor app for supplies."The response was overwhelming and extremely heartwarming. I was expecting 20 jackets, and I got hundreds," said Kvendru.Their converted garage is filled with boxes of donations, including other clothing items, gloves, shoes and umbrellas. The couple also plans to hand out COVID-prevention kits."We made COVID bags ... a couple of masks, hand sanitizer, and wipes," said Kvendru.In all, the couple has put together some 300 gift bags and stockings filled with snacks and toiletries, including some special bags for kids that come with a stuffed animal.Renae gets emotional when talking about a gift she received as a child."I grew up poor, though I was never on the streets and always had food. One year, I think it was Toys for Tots ... some big truck came by our house and gave me a big teddy bear. There are pictures of me hugging that teddy bear. Just remembered how happy that teddy bear used to make me as a kid. If you can give someone that moment, that’s pretty awesome," said Kvendru.Starting this weekend, the couple will drive through areas with homeless populations and start passing out their holiday gifts."If you can help make one person’s day a little brighter, you’ve done good ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A known homeless encampment was cleared this week after employees who work nearby said they were terrorized.The encampment on Federal Boulevard near the 805 overpass was cleared of the usual campers, RVs, stuffed cars, tents and debris commuters often saw driving by.Cal Trans said it did a clean up of the area and California Highway Patrol issued a notice to vacate 72 hours before Monday morning.Nearby, employees who didn't want to reveal where they worked for fear of retaliation said homeless people caused hundreds of dollars in damage. "Windows have been smashed, a mirror was smashed," Jim Withrow said. He described an incident in which an employee coming into work heard a woman scream in the bushes, and was rattled as she rushed to the front door.Another Central San Diego worker said a homeless man jumped the fence and walked toward the front door as an employee was trying to get in. The employee entered and the homeless man shook the door trying to open it. Another employee opened the door and found out he wanted water. She said he didn't seem to be 'all there.'Withrow said the past few months have become more intense; "people who didn't seem to have all their facilities screaming and screaming at people going by."The company went to San Diego Police for help and started putting on pressure.Withrow said he saw the change instantly. "I came around the corner off of 47th and onto Federal and wow, there's no one there."Another employee said it took months to get to this point.San Diego Police told 10News they've been educating the vagrants, and issuing warnings.Along the street, new signs are posted every few yards reading "No littering or dumping.""It feels good, I feel safer. I feel safer because my employees feel safer," Withrow said.As for where the vagrants went, 10News went to the newest Safe Parking lot, run by Jewish Family Services, and it appeared vacant.The last time the Webster street was cleared out was December 2018. The huge undertaking took three days, and was short-lived."They did come right back," Withrow said.This time employees nearby hope the extra signage and police awareness will make a difference. "Hopefully the signs keep us safe out here but there's gotta be other things to do to help the people who are hurting too," he said.A new San Diego ordinance passed in May restricts people from living in their vehicles anywhere within 500 feet of a school or residence. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man was hospitalized after becoming stuck in a cargo elevator shaft at a downtown grocery store.San Diego Fire-Rescue was called to Ralph's grocery store on G St. just after 7:30 p.m. on Saturday to a report of someone stuck in the elevator. Crews arrived to find a man who had been working on the elevator trapped in the elevator shaft.Firefighters worked to free the man and take him to a nearby hospital. The extent of his injuries wasn't immediately known.A witness who works at the grocery store said the man was working on the cargo shaft when someone pressed the elevator button, trapping the man inside. 640

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man who was attempting to paint graffiti on a downtown building fell to his death Friday morning in East Village. The incident was reported about 8:30 a.m. on 15th Street near Broadway, across from San Diego Police Headquarters.
