LEXINGTON, Kent. - Wednesday is National Working Parents Day – a time to recognize and appreciate guardians who balance their work and home life.It’s a task that has been especially challenging during the coronavirus pandemic. Since the school year has started back up, many now have to juggle work while overseeing at-home learning.Michelle Martel, a professor and the director of clinical training for the University of Kentucky’s psychology department, says it’s OK for parents to feel overwhelmed and admit they need help at times.“If you have family or close friends in the area that could provide support, that’s a great place to start,” said Martel.Beyond that, if you haven’t already, Martel suggests reaching out to your employer to see how your job can be adjusted to fit into a new work-life balance.“Maybe it involves little different hours. Maybe it involves a little bit more flexibility,” she said. “I think presenting your boss with that idea, you know just, ‘Hey, I was thinking this might make things a little bit easier. Then I can get done what I need to get done, but also manage my kids and it might take the stress off everyone.’ I think most bosses really right now would welcome that.”Martel also says self-care is not selfish and that it’s important for parents to take moments for themselves during this challenging time.“Doing those things and not feeling bad about it, like ‘Oh, there’s a million things you could be doing right now,’ but maybe you just need to go take a hot bath or you need to just go out and take a walk or do something for you. LITCHFIELD PARK, Arizona — Officials from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office say an 11-year-old boy shot and killed his grandmother then turned the gun on himself in Litchfield Park on Saturday evening. According to MCSO, just after 5 p.m., deputies received a call from a man near Litchfield Road and Wigwam Boulevard who reported that his grandson had shot and killed his wife, 65-year-old Yvonne Woodard and then shot and killed himself.The grandfather told deputies that he and his wife had full custody of their grandson. The couple reportedly asked the grandson to clean his room and pick up after himself throughout the day as he was "being stubborn about it."Officials say the two then sat down on their couch in the living room to watch television. The grandson then reportedly came up behind them and shot Yvonne in the back of the head with a gun that belonged to the grandfather. The grandfather then ran after the grandson but quickly returned to render aid to his wife. Moments later he reported that the grandson had then shot himself.At that point, the grandfather retrieved the gun and called 9-1-1. "In the preliminary stages of this investigation there had been no previous signs that the grandson might harm someone or himself and there was no cause for concern prior to this event," MCSO said in a news release. The investigation remains ongoing at this time. 1425

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - One of the witnesses to Sunday's fatal drive-by shooting in La Jolla happened to be a trauma expert."I did see people at that point running all over the place," neighbor Michelle Carcel said. Steps from the crime scene, Carcel recounted what she saw hours prior. One woman was killed, and three men were shot on a sleepy street in La Jolla. San Diego Police said all victims were outside a house party on Draper Avenue when the shooting happened. RELATED: 1 dead in shooting at party in La Jolla"By 9 o'clock everything is shut down, so when we hear kids having a party and stuff, we often say it is a very nice thing. It is a quiet calm thing. So to have this occur is completely out of the ordinary," Carcel said. The scene was so foreign to neighbors in this area but all too familiar for Carcel. As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Carcel often deals with and speaks about gun violence and trauma. "I've talked about Parkland shooting. I've talked about the Orlando shooting. And to have it happen here, to have it happen here so close to home, is still so jarring and so rattling and really brings the message that it can happen anywhere," Dr. Carcel said. Carcel now wears both the witness hat and the clinical psychologist hat. She is giving advice to everyone involved. "This is going to have acute side effects," Dr. Carcel said. "You're going to have post-traumatic stress that could occur within a period of time. Just monitoring and making sure that they are getting the counseling and support that they need."She hopes for the end of senseless shootings, even if it means she may be out of a job. "Our children are dying," Dr. Carcel said. "Innocent people are dying, I don't know what the solution is, but I hope we come together as a community to figure it out."Dr. Carcel said she will conduct a trauma healing circle for her neighbors at a later time. 1900

LA POSTA RESERVATION, Calif. (KGTV) - A local Native American tribe is considering its legal options after one of their sacred sites was vandalized. At least 5 rocks in an area used by the La Posta Band of Mission Indians’ ancestors were spray painted over the weekend.“A lot people don’t understand they’re on the reservation here,” said Victor Estrada, Vice Chairmen of the La Posta Band of Mission Indians. La Posta Reservation is about 50 miles east of San Diego and was blanketed by snow last week prompting visitors to make the trek out to the high elevation to see it. “You can come out here and play in our snow, but don’t destroy our stuff,” said Estrada, “don’t spray paint your name and your family and say 'hey you were here.' We understand you were here, we know you were here.” Estrada says they found out who may have vandalized it through social media and that the tribe may prosecute, but would be open to the offenders cleaning it up themselves. Those claiming responsibility wrote a statement to 10News saying in part: “We are truly sorry as we were not aware that we were on sacred or tribal lands. My husband will be going up this weekend to clean up the writing on the rocks.” 1206

(KGTV) - Three weeks after violence ripped through La Mesa, small businesses continue supporting one another, working toward recovery."It broke our heart when a lot of the glass was busted," Mike Miller said. He recently moved to La Mesa with his wife, Neng, charmed by the small town feel.The looting and destruction the night of May 30th after a rally against injustice sent a shockwave through the community.Leslie Thomas said she watched the horror from her balcony, just a couple blocks away. "We could see the flames and everything coming up, and we didn't sleep much that night but the next morning we got up and we said, 'you know what? We live here, what can we do to fix everything?'"That mantra reflected by hundreds who showed up that Sunday morning to help.As Leslie walked with her husband down the street they noticed "the liquor store on the corner down there, we walked by and we were like, 'Your windows aren't blown out!' and he was like, 'Everyone who knows me, who knows that I'm part of this neighborhood came out and protected my windows and I told them to go home and they wouldn't.' But he was out there giving water to everybody [Sunday] and he didn't question why he was doing it. People were giving out free coffee."A showing of sheer humanity.La Mesa neighbors aren't surprised to hear that generosity is still being extended weeks later.La Mesa Glass replaced the windows at Play It Again Sports June 11th and Bohemian House Saturday for free.The owners of Bohemian House said they were incredibly grateful for their gift, helping them get back to business.10News reached out to La Mesa Glass to ask how many businesses they have supported during this time and have not heard back yet.Neighbors said even the artwork painted over plywood boards standing guard in front of many La Mesa businesses were uplifting. Words and images of hope reminded them how strong and close their community is."I don't think this is going to change us in any way, I actually think it's going to make us a stronger neighborhood," Thomas said, defining La Mesa Strong.Some of the boards have come down but there are still more than a dozen businesses with plywood protecting their broken windows. 2229
