NEW YORK — David Dinkins, the first Black mayor of New York City, died Monday at the age of 93.Dinkins was elected in 1989 and served as mayor from 1990 to 1993, making him the first and only Black man to serve as the city's mayor.He was born in 1927 in Trenton, New Jersey. He was drafted, served as a Marine and later graduated from Howard University and Brooklyn Law School. He served in the state assembly before later becoming president of the board of elections, a city clerk and Manhattan borough president.Dinkins defeated longtime incumbent Mayor Ed Koch in the Democratic primary in 1989 and later beat Rudy Giuliani on his path to City Hall.In his inaugural address, he vowed to be "mayor of all the people of New York" and declared, "we are all foot soldiers on the march to freedom."Dinkins was known for his reserved public demeanor and civility.He was an American voice in favor of anti-apartheid sanctions, and his policies as mayor reflected his support for South Africa.He also created the office of Special Commissioner of Investigations for schools, built a system of after hour youth centers called Beacon Schools, and worked to create an all civilian police complaint review board.According to a city biography, Dinkins was sharply criticized for his handling of racial strife in Crown Heights, a boycott of Korean Grocers in Brooklyn and civil unrest in Washington Heights. He also dealt with sluggish economic growth.Giuliani succeeded Dinkins in 1993 after one term in office.After leaving City Hall, Dinkins remained active in city politics and taught public affairs at Columbia University.The NYPD said initial indications were that he died of natural causes.Dinkins was married to his wife Joyce for more than 65 years, and together they had two children.Joyce Dinkins died in October. NEW YORK — Tropical Storm Fay battered the Northeast Friday, not only drenching the region but causing rip currents, flooding, and bringing with it dangerous winds that damaged vehicles and prompted power outages.The storm brought heavy rain and gusty winds throughout the day, causing Flash Flood Warnings and advisories across the region. Parts of New Jersey, New York City and Long Island experienced flooding in some neighborhoods.Periods of heavy downpours continued through the afternoon and evening hours.Despite the downpours, the storm weakened after making landfall Friday afternoon.The storm system was expected to bring 2 to 4 inches of rain, with the possibility of flash flooding in parts of the mid-Atlantic and southern New England. That’s down from earlier forecasts of about 3 to 5 inches of rain.The fast-moving storm developed late Thursday afternoon off the coast of North Carolina and made its way to the tri-state area by late Friday morning.Tropical Storm Warnings, and Flash Flood Warnings and Watches and Flood Advisories, were issued for New York City and the surrounding areas as Fay was expected to bring torrential downpours and gusty winds of 39 to 57 mph.A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect until further notice.Fay is the first Tropical Storm Warning in the New York area in the month of July since Hurricane Bertha in 1996.Strong winds could cause tree limbs and other objects to fall, leading to power outages. Thousands of residents in New York and New Jersey have reported power outages across the state.Along the coast, Fay caused heavy surf, creating some beach erosion along coastal sections. The risk for dangerous rip currents will be high and swimming is not advised. Despite all these issues along the coast, the risk for a storm surge will be minimal.Conditions may improve as early as Saturday morning. The sun will break out and temperatures could approach 90 degrees. During the afternoon, a cold front will approach bringing the risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms.It remains hot heading into Sunday with highs at around 90 again. NEW YORK (AP) — Getting an Amazon package delivered from the sky is closer to becoming a reality. The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday it has granted Amazon approval to deliver packages by drones. Amazon says the approval is an important step, but added that it is still testing and flying the drones. It did not say when it expected drones to make deliveries to shoppers. Last year, Amazon unveiled self-piloting drones that are fully electric, can carry 5 pounds of goods and are designed to deliver items in 30 minutes by dropping them in a backyard.The FAA said Amazon is the third drone delivery service to win flight approval. NORMAL HEIGHTS (KGTV) - A dog died in an apartment fire in Normal Heights on Sunday afternoon.The fire started around 4:12 p.m. at 3546 Monroe Avenue. Officials say the owner had multiple dogs living in the unit, but only one was killed. No other injuries were reported.The fire was extinguished in less than 10 minutes. It started as a couch fire, caused by a faulty extension cord, officials said. 408
