EL CAJON (CNS) - Murder and attempted murder charges were filed Friday against a man accused of shooting two men in El Cajon earlier this year, killing one of them.Roberto Hernandez, 26, faces 59 years to life in state prison if convicted of the charges stemming from the March 20 shooting that killed James Bowens, 20, and injured another 20-year-old man, both El Cajon residents, according to Deputy District Attorney Clayton Carr.Police said officers responded just before 8 p.m. to reports of gunshots in the area of 700 Applewood Drive. Witnesses said "a confrontation had taken place in the street near the intersection of Applewood Drive and Cedar Street," according to El Cajon police.Bowens died at a hospital of at least one gunshot to his upper body and the other man was shot in the leg, police said.A suspected motive for the shooting, and the relationship, if any, between Hernandez and the victims, was not disclosed.Hernandez, who entered a not guilty plea, is being held without bail and is due back in court June 29, according to county jail records. 1076
During an interview on Fox News Tuesday, President Donald Trump attacked the Committee on Presidential Debates, deriding the committee's choice of moderator and rule changes that require candidates' microphones to be muted while an opponent is giving opening statements."I think this whole thing is crazy," Trump said.The committee announced the new rule change on Monday, three days ahead of the final presidential debate between Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.Trump said those on the committee "are not good people," citing a 2016 debate with Hillary Clinton in which the committee admitted that there were issues with Trump's microphone.Trump also took issue with the committee's choice of moderator, NBC News' Kristen Welker, calling her "terrible and totally partisan."According to the CPD website, the committee selects moderators based on three criteria: "a) familiarity with the candidates and the major issues of the presidential campaign; b) extensive experience in live television broadcast news; and c) an understanding that the debate should focus maximum time and attention on the candidates and their views."In August, the Trump campaign submitted a list of 24 suggested moderators packed with anchors and pundits from friendly outlets like Fox News, and a few journalist from broadcast networks like CBS, ABC and NBC. None of those moderators were chosen, though Fox News anchor Chris Wallace conducted the first presidential debate.Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien recently filed a complaint with the CPD, saying that the debate should have more of a focus on foreign policy. The listed topics for Thursday's debate include "Fighting COVID-19, American Families, Race in America, Climate Change and National Security Leadership." During a press conference on Wednesday, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden said that he believes the police officers who shot Jacob Blake and Breonna Taylor should be charged with crimes.Biden said that the cases should be handled within the judicial system, but said that the officers in the cases should face charges "at a minimum."Biden added that the person who shot a Trump supporter during a weekend confrontation in Portland, Oregon should also face charges.When asked by reporters how Biden would keep Americans safe in times of civil unrest, Biden said he wouldn't "incite violence" and would condemn it when occurred. He accused Trump of acting "irresponsibly" by not condemning violence amid protests."Protesting is a right and free speech is a right. But to engage in violence: Burning, looting, unrest in the name of protesting is wrong and people should be held accountable," Biden said.Biden added that he "didn't hear much" from Trump in regard to the shooting of Jacob Blake.Biden is scheduled to visit Kenosha tomorrow, where he says he will "meet with community leaders." Biden's visit will come two days after Trump visited the city — a visit that largely consisted of viewing damage caused by riots and meeting with law enforcement officials. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - Plans for a new high school in El Cajon are facing opposition from neighbors.Literacy First Charter Schools wants to relocate their high school from its Lemon Grove location to a new spot near the intersection of Jamacha Blvd. and Chase Street. They bought an 8-acre plot of land five years ago on which they hope to build.Plans for the school call for a two-story building. It will have 22 classrooms, athletic fields, a 161-spot parking lot, and room for up to 450 students and 33 teachers.Officials with the Literacy First system say the old school is too small and too far away for their growing needs. They believe the new location will help them serve more families, and keep their current families from leaving after 8th grade."We hope it becomes what every one of our schools is," says Executive Director Debbie Beyer. "We hope it becomes a model for what great schools can be."But neighbors in the Rancho San Diego area worry that it will bring more traffic and congestion to an area that already has problems along Jamacha Boulevard."It's just incredible out here on Jamacha," says Veronica McGowan, who lives a block away. "People go about 50 miles an hour, and they're anxious to get in and out of these side streets. If you're turning right, you're safe, but if you're turning left, it could take a while."Social media posts on neighborhood Facebook groups raise concerns about delays at the intersection because of the addition of another school. They say nearby Valhalla and Steele Canyon High Schools already make the commute frustrating.Beyer says her school's small size will minimize the impact, as many students won't be driving. She adds the charter school system is ready to do their part to improve the roads and mitigate the traffic along both Chase and Jamacha."We have to add another lane. We're adding turning lanes. We're widening the street. We're adding sidewalks," she says. "We're paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to improve that intersection."She also says they're looking into staggering the start times, so not all grades begin at the same time, and having different start times from the other schools in the neighborhood.As for the complaint that the area already has enough schools, Beyer believes families will welcome another option."We let the market bear everything that there is when it comes to business and commerce and entrepreneurship," she says. "Why can't we do that in education? Why don't parents have a choice?"Beyer and Literacy First presented environmental review plans for the new school to the Valle Del Oro Community Planning Group last week. They hope to bring those same plans to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors this spring.There's still no official timeline for when they hope to start construction or open the new campus. 2833
