BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- China Tuesday pledged to continue to promote the development of military relations with Singapore.Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie made the remarks when meeting with Chiang Chie Foo, visiting Permanent Secretary of the Singaporean Defense Ministry.Recent years had witnessed a rapid development of China-Singapore relations, with political mutual trust, a reciprocal and mutually beneficial economic relationship and fruitful cooperation, Liang said.Bilateral military ties had undergone a healthy development, with sound exchanges and cooperation mechanisms, frequent high-level visits and good cooperation in personnel training, joint military training and escort missions, Liang said.China was willing to work with Singapore to continuously boost relations between the two countries and armed forces, so as to play an active role in jointly safeguarding regional security and stability, he said.Chiang said Singapore attached great importance to the development of its relations with China.The two armed forces were expected to maintain exchanges and cooperation and to strengthen understanding and mutual trust, he said.Ma Xiaotian, deputy chief of general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, and Chiang co-chaired the third China-Singapore defense policy dialogue before the meeting.Both sides exchanged views in-depth on regional security, relations of the two countries and armed forces as well as other issues of common concern and reached consensus on further strengthening military ties.They agreed to continue to enhance China-Singapore military cooperation and promote the development of friendly and cooperative military relations.The two nations held the first defense policy dialogue in January 2008 in China and the second in March 2009 in Singapore.

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The world's most populous country is expanding its social security net as China's major social insurance program reached a new high for the number of people covered, official figures show.The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security said on Thursday that the nation's urban pension insurance covered 235.5 million people by the end of 2009, an increase of 16.6 million over the beginning of that same year.In addition, 26.47 million migrant workers were also included, which was 2.31 million more migrants than at the start of 2009.Officials note that pension fund revenues topped 1.15 trillion yuan by the end of last year, up 18 percent year on year. This followed the government raising the monthly pension income for business retirees for the fifth time between 2005 and 2009 to 1,225 yuan (180 U.S. dollars) a person.Also, the country's basic urban medical insurance covered 401 million people in 2009, of which 219 million were urban dwellers and 43.35 million were rural migrant workers.Additional figures showed that unemployment insurance covered 127 million people while those carrying work injury insurance reached 149 million. BEIJING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature will discuss the constitutional reform package of Hong Kong, which refers to the amendments to the methods of selecting the city's Chief Executive and forming the Legislative Council in 2012, during a bimonthly session scheduled from Aug. 23 to 28.The draft amendments to Annexes I to the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region concerning the methods for the selection of the Chief Executive was submitted to the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee for approval by Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang.The draft amendments to Annexes II concerning the formation of the city's Legislative Council was submitted to the NPC Standing Committee for the record.The Legislative Council of Hong Kong passed the draft amendments in June, before Donald Tsang gave his consent to draft amendments later in the month.According to Monday's Chairmen's Council of the NPC Standing Committee, presided over by NPC Standing Committee Chairman Wu Bangguo, lawmakers will also continue to deliberate draft amendments to the law on officers in reserve service, the draft law on mediation, as well as the draft law on the application of laws to civil relationships involving foreign interests.Lawmakers will also deliberate for the first time draft amendments to the law of deputies to the NPC and local People's Congresses, draft amendments to the Criminal Law, the draft law on intangible cultural heritages, and the draft revision of the soil and water conservation law.Also on the agenda of the upcoming session are discussions of the reports on implementation of the national economic and social development plan and budgets, among others.

SHANGHAI, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner paid a visit here Thursday as the last leg of her China trip.Shanghai was more prosperous and beautiful now, said Kirchner, who came to the city in 2004 for the first time, in a meeting with Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng Thursday morning.Over 40 heads of states and governments from various nations had visited Shanghai since the opening of the Shanghai World Expo on May 1, Han said, adding that 15 state and government chiefs were expected to attend the closing ceremony scheduled for the end of October.Kirchner said the Expo was a "real world gathering" and reiterated Argentina's support to the event.One hundred and eighty-nine countries and fifty-seven international organizations have participated the Expo.Deeply impressed by the sound construction and administration of Shanghai, Kirchner said the cities in other countries including those of Argentina should learn from Shanghai's development."We will introduce Shanghai's experience to Argentina after this China visit," she added.Kirchner visited the Chinese and Argentine Pavilions after the meeting.She will leave Shanghai and conclude her China visit later Thursday night.

BEIJING, June 26 (Xinhua) -- China's floating population of migrant workers reached a record 211 million in 2009 and will hit 350 million by 2050 if government policies remain unchanged, warned a report released on Saturday.However the report, entitled "The 2010 Report on the Development of China's Floating Population," said the figure would increase at a slower rate as the number of new workers joining the migrant population falls each year to reach 3 million by 2050, down from the current 6 million people joining the migrant work force each year.Although the number of long-distance migrants decreased in 2009 as a result of a weakened demand for labor caused by the financial crisis, the long-term overall tendency of people moving to eastern coastal areas and key traffic hubs would not change, said the report.According to the report, more families moved to other places and chose to settle their homes there, causing more pressure on the government to reform its management and service policies for the migrant population in order to ensure their livelihood.The report was based on a survey by the National Population and Family Planning Commission.
