SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Just in time for the San Diego Zoo's reopening this month, a recent animal addition will be making his debut.A 2-month-old male pygmy hippopotamus, named Akobi, and his mother, Mabel, have been moved from the park's maternity habitat to the main pygmy hippo habitat in the Lost Forest area of the zoo.Akobi, born on April 9 and the first success pygmy hippo birth at the zoo in more than 30 years, stayed close to his mom once introduced to the habitat. The animals live in rivers and streams in the forests of West Africa. Less than 2,500 pygmy hippos now remain in Africa. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In a graphic display, a former charter boat captain demonstrated Wednesday how to make the knots found on Rebecca Zahau’s body, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.Zahau was discovered bound and hanging from a balcony of the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado in 2011.While the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office determined the death was a suicide, Zahau’s family believes she was murdered.The Zahau family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Adam Shacknai, the brother of Rebecca’s boyfriend and the only other person in the home at the time of her death.Lindsey Philpott used a lifelike mannequin covered with a white sheet to show the overhand and clove hitch knots, which, according to the U-T report, Philpott said were common for nautical uses.Shacknai works as a tugboat captain.Philpott said under cross-examination that both knots are simple and widely used, the Union-Tribune reported.The Zahau wrongful death trial, which was in its fifth day Wednesday, is expected to last four weeks. 1034

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Loved ones are mourning the loss of a City Heights man and longtime professional wrestler to COVID-19.In the wrestling ring, Martin Rodriguez was known as "Espantito," or "The Terror." He donned a mask and black-and-white tights and had a knack for performing seamless moves.In early September, the man known for his strength felt tired and then developed a cough and fever. A few weeks later, he was having trouble breathing and was taken to the ER."He went in with pneumonia and was then diagnosed with COVID-19," said his daughter Barbara Rodriguez.Barbara says a few days later, he was placed on a ventilator. About three weeks later, Martin, a husband and father of two, died at the age of 53."He gave me strength, gave me guidance, and helped me become the person I am today. Knowing I won't have him for the future is painful," said Barbara.The man she knew as her loving, caring father stood in contrast to the character inside the ring. After several years in Mexico's famed AAA Lucha Libre in the early 90s, Rodriguez moved to San Diego and became a freelancer, wrestling in leagues in Southern California, Canada, and Mexico. He was always the bad guy and he loved it."Hyped him up even more. He loved entertaining people, making them laugh and feeling emotion," said Barbara.Since the pandemic began, his matches had been canceled. He owns a landscaping business and was taking all the COVID-19 precautions. Barbara doesn't know how he contracted the virus."I just want people to be safe. Wear a mask. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Locals and visitors in San Diego's mountains Friday awoke to a winter wonderland of snowfall.A Thanksgiving storm brought a fresh coating of snowfall to the county's higher elevations, including areas of Julian, Descanso, Palomar Mountain, Pine Valley, and Mt. Laguna. A winter storm warning will continue through 10 p.m. Friday.San Diego mountains can expect to see about 10 to 18 inches of snow above 5,500', 10News meteorologist Megan Parry reports. Areas between 3,000 and 4,000 feet will see trace amounts to 2 inches of snow, and areas 4,000 and 4,500' can expect about 3 to 8 inches.
