JINAN, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- China concludes a five-day air defense exercise on Saturday with a live-fire drill and precision attacks on air targets by ground-to-air missiles.The live-fire drill, in Shandong Province, was part of the exercise code-named "Vanguard-2010," which began Tuesday in seven cities across Henan and Shandong provinces, involving more than 12,000 personnel.Seven types of ground-to-air weaponry, including a new type of ground-to-air missile and another state-of-the-art anti-aircraft gun, were used in intercepting and concentrating fire on air targets.Nearly 200 military aircraft, including drones, reconnaissance aircraft, fighter jets and helicopters, were involved in the five-day military drill, said Feng Zhaoju, deputy commander of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Jinan Military Command.The annual drill, consisting of two phases, focused on an emergency evacuation, strategy, reconnaissance, early warning, ground-to-air attacks and evacuation of command posts during the first phase which ended Thursday.Its second phase included testing of air defense abilities in a "complicated electromagnetic environment."A "Vanguard-2009A" exercise last year involved 5,000 troops from the army and air force."Vanguard-2008" included a 2,200-strong armored brigade from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Jinan Military Area Command.

HONG KONG, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Air China, China's leading carrier listed in Hong Kong, said late Friday that it would pay 1. 3 98 billion U.S. dollars to buy 20 Boeing 737-800 planes.In a statement filed to the HK stock exchange, the carrier said the cost would be "payable by cash in installments" and it would " take delivery of the Boeing Aircraft in stages from 2013 to 2015"."The aircraft price is subject to price escalation by applying a formula. Boeing Company has granted to the Company (Air China) significant price concessions with regard to the Boeing Aircraft," said the statement.The transaction will be funded through cash generated from Air China's business operations, commercial bank loans and other financing instruments of Air China, said the statement.The Beijing-based airlines said the transaction would expand its fleet capacity with an increase of around 5 percent based on available tonne kilometers of Air China by the end of 2009.In particular, the deal would reinforce Air China's market share in the Chinese domestic market, and would also increase frequency of flights for a number of domestic and neighboring international routes, it added.By the end of September last year. BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) - Temperatures as high as 41 degrees Celsius continued to grill south China this week, but local Chinese are popping up with cool ways to cope with the heat.Every morning this summer, thousands of residents in the eastern Chinese city of Hanzhou rush to air-raid shelters, not to escape air attacks, but summer heat.In the capital of Zhejiang Province, many city dwellers have found their summer resorts in the city' s nine bomb shelters, which were dug beneath hummocks in the 1960s to defend against "American imperialist invaders" .In one shelter in southern Hanzhou, elders are watching swordsman TV opera or playing mahjong, while children play hide-and-seek in the labyrinth-like place.Temperatures inside the shelter were 22 degrees Celsius, compared to 38 degrees Celsius outdoors, according to a LED screen above one entrance."We old folks don' t like to be cooped up in air-conditioned rooms," said Ye Chulin, a local retiree.
