SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hundreds gathered outside Fire Station 21 in Pacific Beach Tuesday evening to remember a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department firefighter killed in a motorcycle crash over the weekend.Ryan Ferrara, 39, was riding on the back of the motorcycle as a passenger when it crashed into a parked vehicle. It happened July 18 at the 13000 block of Piping Rock Lane in the Lakeside area.The driver of the motorcycle was hospitalized; he has not yet been identified. Authorities say neither the driver nor Ferrara were wearing helmets.RELATED: San Diego firefighter killed in Lakeside-area motorcycle crashThe crash is still under investigation, but the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office says alcohol or drugs may have been factors in the crash.Many who knew Ferrara were visibly distraught during Tuesday's remembrance ceremony. At sunset, the crowds moved to the boardwalk and sands. Many firefighters were there to show the family their support.Capt. Rich Marcello, who worked with Ferrara, says it's a Fire Station 21 tradition to go down to the beach and watch the sunset after every shift when possible."Every evening, we come out and watch the sunset and gather round each other and kind of hang out with each other, which is why we're here with the family today," he said.Before he was a firefighter, Ferrara was a lifeguard. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Five dogs died during a fire at a former kennel in Lakeside early Sunday morning. The fire broke out on the 8700 block of Winter Gardens Boulevard around 3 a.m., according to the Lakeside Fire Protection District. The house used to be a functioning kennel, but the woman who lives in the home was either pet sitting or storing the animal for residents at the time of the fire, the district says. Crews say the fire started downstairs in the two-story home. The department says the age of the home made it difficult to fight the blaze. “Old structures are lath and plaster, they’re difficult to fight fires because the fires are get deep in the walls. So it takes a long time to put those out. There is a lot of stuff inside of the home as well. So moving hoselines inside of the house is very difficult as well,” according to Bernard Molloy with Lakeside Fire. And that includes a local pilot, who helping those workers, that help him to get off the ground. Anthony Oshinuga became interested in becoming a pilot when he was 5-years old, and now he's a veteran of the air. Anthony's need for speed and adrenaline led him to racing and performing aerobatics. But he calls his latest piloting adventure, his most rewarding. Flying his own biplane, he traveled across in the country for a campaign he calls, "Reach for the sky...we've got the ground"."Essentially, what that means, is for the support crew that is on the ground at each airport we visited. We delivered a COVID-19 relief package that had face masks, hand sanitizer, and then we gave them a mug to say thank you. We appreciate what you are doing."It was quite a trip for the Valley Center resident, as his flight included 44 stops in 22 locations."My sponsor, Epic Fuel,s, put together this campaign that covered six thousand nautical miles, in my biplane, traveling about 160 miles per hour, " says Anthony. His trip was about giving thanks to airport employees."We have people at the airport, like the guys who fuel the trucks, and those workers who greet people coming off private jets. There are interactions and contact with these people all the time, and we don't think about that."And along his journey, he was able to visit with young kids, and maybe inspire them to become pilots one day. "There were a few stops along the way where people got word of me stopping in. A bunch of kids came out that were S.T.E.M motivated.
