The American Bald Eagle, a federally protected bird once considered endangered, is facing a new threat.Conservationists say the birds are being poisoned, and the number of cases are rising — and some worry the problem will not slow down.Last year, the U.S. Department of Interior lifted a ban on hunting with lead bullets on wildlife refuges. However, it's still illegal to use lead ammo to hunt waterfowl.Many hunters say they use lead ammunition because it is heavier than steel or copper, meaning the bullet reaches the target more accurately. Lead ammo is also cheaper than steel or copper.Betsy Finch is the manager of the Fontenelle Forest Raptor Recovery, which holds dozens of birds of all kinds that need help until they are well enough to be freed or put to rest. She can easily tell when an eagle has lead poisoning."Inability to stand, convulsions, head tremors, difficulty breathing, gastrointestinal distress — because lead paralyzes the gut, so they can't digest food, dehydration," Finch said.The start of 2018 has been hard for Finch, putting her time and energy into sometimes a losing effort."Because there are others that need our help," she said.While she hopes hunters will think twice before firing off their rifles with lead bullets, she doesn't blame all hunters for the rising amounts of lead poisoning. Finch says it's often the hunter who are are the ones who find the sick eagles and bring them to the recovery center. 1490

Tesla on Thursday recalled about 123,000 Model S sedans, asking customers with cars built before April of 2016 to have their power steering bolts replaced.A Tesla spokesperson said the company has observed "excessive corrosion" of the part in some cold climates where a certain type of road salt is used.No injuries or accidents have been reported in connection with the issue, the spokesperson said.A Tesla spokesperson said that if the bolts fail, the driver should still be able to control the vehicle. The issue can make the car more difficult to steer at low speeds and to parallel park, and it should "not materially affect control at high speed."The company sent out emails to Model S owners who have cars included in the recall.The Model S has been lauded for its safety ratings, but news of this recall comes at a rough time for Tesla.Its stock price has plunged more than 25% over the past month. Tacked onto the coronavirus stimulus bill is new legislation tackling one of the most controversial practices in health care – surprise medical bills.That's when you go to the hospital or have an elective procedure and then later find out some of the doctors or facilities were out of network, meaning you could owe tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars.The most impactful part about the legislation is that patients would no longer get those surprise out-of-network bills for emergency care or for a planned procedure. They will instead be billed an in-network rate.Out-of-network providers would have to give patients a heads up on estimated charges, at least three days.Air ambulance companies would also not be able to charge more than in-network costs. Ground ambulances were not included.Insurance and providers have to go to arbitration to work out the final payment. It's a complex solution advocates say could end up costing Americans more in the long run.“So, a mediation process that some states have put in place, but research has shown that it increases the likelihood that consumers face higher premium costs on the back end,” said Clare Krusing with the Coalition Against Surprise Medical Billing.That Coalition had been pushing for policies that, in their simplest form, would have essentially made in and out-of-network rates the same.
