BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government encourages Chinese businesses to set up economic and trade cooperation zones in member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to deepen cooperation, a senior commerce official said Wednesday.Vice Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng, speaking at a preparatory meeting for the seventh China-ASEAN Expo, said China and ASEAN members have strengthened economic and trade cooperation since the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA) came into effect on Jan. 1 this year.Customs data showed that bilateral trade totalled 39.12 billion U.S. dollars in the first two months of 2009, up 66 percent from a year ago.Chinese exports to ASEAN states rose 52.9 percent to 18.69 billion U.S. dollars while imports from ASEAN jumped 80.2 percent to 20.43 billion U.S. dollars.Gao called upon "eligible" Chinese enterprises to "go overseas" to ASEAN countries to set up economic and trade zones with infrastructure and industrial chains.He also said the two sides should implement the agreement on trade and expand trade, calling for an increase in the trade of high value-added products, including mechanical and electrical products and other hi-tech products.The two sides' enterprises should further expand cooperation and deepening ties in the agricultural, manufacturing, infrastructure, resources, and processing sectors, he said.The CAFTA, covering a population of about 1.9 billion, is the world's third largest trade agreement in terms of trade volume, after the European Union and the North American Free Trade Area.The ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.Under the CAFTA, the average tariff on goods from ASEAN countries entering China has been cut to 0.1 percent from 9.8 percent, while the six original ASEAN members - Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand - slashed the average tariff on Chinese goods entering ASEAN states from 12.8 percent to 0.6 percent.The seventh China-ASEAN Expo will be held in Nanning, capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, from Oct. 20 to 24 this year.

CANBERRA, May 13 (Xinhua) -- Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd met with visiting General Guo Boxiong, vice-chairman of China 's Central Military Commission, later on Thursday.In the meeting, Rudd praised China's reforms and opening up which massively upheaved its economy and the society, and said the achievements are unparalleled in the world.Rudd said the Australian government places importance in Sino- Australian relations. In recent years, there has been a very good political climate given the strengthened economic cooperation and closer exchanges between the peoples. BEIJING, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The United States wants to work with China to expand the global economy and promote the development of the green economy, said a U.S. Commerce Department official Wednesday in Beijing.Cameron Kerry, General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Commerce, said at a news briefing at the U.S. embassy that the two countries faced an important time in their relations."My visit here this week is an appetizer in the banquet of events between the U.S. and China."According to U.S. Commerce Department, Commerce Secretary Gary Locke will lead the first cabinet-level trade delegation to China next week to promote exports of leading technologies as part of President Barack Obama's state export plan to increase U.S. employment.The department said the mission was intended to promote exports of leading U.S. technologies related to clean energy, energy efficiency, and electric energy storage, transmission and distribution.The two sides would also exchange views on issues such as trade and the investment environment, innovation and the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights, said Kerry.Locke will also attend the economic track dialogue of the second round of Sino-U.S. strategic and economic dialogue in Beijing in late May.Twenty-four U.S. companies will join Locke for the China leg of the trade mission. TAIPEI, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Luo Qingquan, Communist Party of China (CPC) chief in central China's Hubei Province, left Taiwan Monday with a one-thousand-strong delegation after an eight-day visit to the island, expressing confidence in the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations."The visit was very smooth and fruitful... I'm expecting Hubei and Taiwan to carry out more exchanges and boost cooperation," Luo said as he departed the island.Luo's delegation arrived here on April 19 for a Hubei-Taiwan cultural festival filled with exhibitions, forums and performances featuring Hubei culture.Luo said the two regions reached a consensus on exchange and cooperation in economic, scientific, technological and cultural fields.He noted Taiwan's advanced farm-products processing technology could be well applied in Hubei, a province rich in agriculture.During the trip, the delegation also visited medium- and small-sized companies, farm and schools in Taipei, Taichung, Yunlin and Hsinchu.The Hubei-Taiwan festival has been held in Hubei's capital Wuhan six times since 2004. It was the first time the event was held on the island.The Chinese mainland and Taiwan have been recently intensifying their exchanges, especially high-level visits to the island by mainland delegations, which is seen as a sign of increasingly solid relations.Earlier this month, a municipal government delegation of about 260 people headed by Shanghai mayor Han Zheng visited the island to promote the upcoming Shanghai World Expo.During the trip, several Shanghai companies and Taiwanese counterparts signed 28 agreements on long-term exchanges and short-term purchases, along with agreements on investments in finance, chemical materials, steel, tourism, intellectual property rights and farm products, among others.
