SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo's 7-month-old endangered Matschie’s tree kangaroo has finally emerged from her mother's pouch. The young "joey" has not been named, but is beginning to spend more time outside her mom, Polly, according to zoo officials.“The joey, right now, cannot get enough things in her mouth,” said Breanne Barney, keeper at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “She’s constantly trying to eat leaves, greens, various vegetables, corn—even chewing on moms’ ears, tail, hands and feet!”The little kangaroo doesn't stray far from her mom though, as she learns to climb and maneuver outside of the pouch, the zoo says.Matschie’s tree kangaroos have an estimated gestation period of about 45 days and are about the size of a jelly bean when born. Once born, they crawl back into their mom's pouch and attach to a nipple to gain nourishment and grow. Tree kangaroos remain in the pouch for a few months.“Polly is an excellent mother, and consistently grooming her little one,” Barney said. “Due to their small population numbers, this joey provides a spark of hope for the future of this species.”The kangaroos are listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's list of threatened species. There are less than 2,500 of the kangaroos in their native habitats of Papua New Guinea and the Huon Peninsula.Unfortunately, they are hunted by humans for food and trade, according to the zoo. The zoo's Matschie’s tree kangaroos came to the Safari Park’s Walkabout Australia in 2018 as part of a Species Survival Plan breeding program. 1573

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego veterans from WWII and the Korean War are getting ready for a special trip. This weekend they'll board an Honor Flight to Washington D.C.10News is getting exclusive access to the trip and was at Honor Flight San Diego's last planning meeting before the special weekend gets off the ground. David Smith, Founder of Honor Flight San Diego, says it's incredibly important to thank our veterans while there's still time. The oldest veteran on this weekend's flight will be 99-years-old. "I've actually had veterans come up to me and say, 'ya know, in all these years no one has ever said thank you to me - this means so much'," said Smith. The group relies on fundraising to make the honor flight a reality - it costs 0,000 for the entire weekend. Our coverage of the Honor Flight continues Friday morning when Reporter Amanda Brandeis boards the plane with the veterans and will continue through Sunday when they all return to San Diego. Honor Flight San Diego welcomes the community to join the Sunday's homecoming at the San Diego International Airport. The event typically draws in 1,000 people! To take part in the celebration, arrive at Terminal 2 by 2 p.m. on Sunday.  1234

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Six candidates for San Diego's next mayor met on the debate stage Friday to discuss the city's housing and homelessness crises. The solutions for San Diego's affordable housing challenges ranged across each candidate, which included State Assemblyman Todd Gloria, Councilman Scott Sherman, City Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry, activist Tasha Williamson, computer tech Rich Riel, and family nurse practitioner Gita Appelbaum."Let's get real about this. This is strictly a supply and demand issue. So you need to make sure that we create more supply so we can start bringing down the cost of housing," Sherman said.RELATED: Poll: Gloria maintains lead in mayor's race; convention center measure is close"We need a charter change to stop the developers taking our land, which they have done for the last 40 years. Lease it. Don't sell it," Riel said. "It is criminal. What is going on in the real estate assets department because they are so focused on giving away our land."Rent control was also a topic of discussion."I do not support rent control. As a businesswoman, I know it simply doesn't work. It doesn't create one new unit of housing. In fact, it may stymie new construction," said Bry.RELATED: San Diego's top Democratic mayoral candidates square off in debate"I do not support it. Redcap, I think is a reasonable alternative to address escalating cost out," Gloria said."I want to drop my control to 2 percent with owners subsidies," said Williamson. But all of that was tied to homelessness. During the 2019 "We All Count" point-in-time count, more than 8,000 homeless people were living in San Diego County.Candidates specifically focused on what the role of police should be when it comes to interacting with the homeless population.RELATED: Councilman Sherman's candidacy will alter mayor's race"The cops, the police department ... That's not their role," said Appelbaum. "We need health providers ... We need compassionate care.""Well, law enforcement right now is being burdened by Faulconer, and by the city," Riel said. "We are not addressing the homeless issue in the City of San Diego.""Police should not be used to incarcerate people into a jail that has the highest rate of in-custody death," said Williamson."I think we're using police officers to address these individuals is not a good use of police time, given we have a shortage of police officers. We need more trained social workers on the street," said Bry. According to a scientific 10News/Union-Tribune poll, the mayoral race hasn't changed much, with 29 percent of likely voters still backing Gloria, with Sherman and Bry the only other candidates to break double digits. Another 32 percent of voters were still undecided. 2737

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State's plans for a Mission Valley stadium cleared one of its last major hurdles. The university's design and financing plans for Aztec Stadium were approved by the California State University Board of Trustees, leaving only the close of sale on the land — and current coronavirus pandemic — left. The board's approval gives SDSU the ability to prepare construction for a 35,000-capacity stadium, eventually leading to a Mission Valley campus.RELATED: City of San Diego, SDSU inch closer to SDCCU Stadium site deal"We are pleased that the trustees continue to share our vision for this project, as the construction of the stadium is a key first step allowing us to unlock the rest of the Mission Valley site plan," SDSU President Adela de la Torre said. "Current events remind us that we need to approach every decision with intention. The board's approval today means that we can move forward in our planning and deliberation, and advance Mission Valley as it makes the strongest sense for our students and for San Diego."SDSU and CSU will continue to monitor the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic and make scheduling and planning adjustments.RELATED: SDSU presents offer to purchase SDCCU Stadium siteAztec Stadium is expected to cost about 0 million, funded through philanthropic gifts and bonds to be paid back through revenue generated by the facility. The facility's revenue will also support its operating costs. The project is part of San Diego State's "SDSU Mission Valley" campus plan, which includes school facilities; housing for students, the community, and affordable housing; retail; and a community river park.SDSU is still working with the City of San Diego to close a sales agreement on the land. 1753

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Starting in September, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar will become a "living lab" for brand new technology, helping shape how tech can benefit our military and cities in the future. The base is one of 12 Naval X "Tech Bridges" in the nation, partnering the Marine Corps, Navy, academia, and private businesses to test and develop leading-edge tech.To prepare the base, Verizon installed a brand new 5G network in July, making the base the first in the nation with this capability.Lt. Col. Brandon Newell, Director of Naval X Southern California Tech Bridge, said Miramar was ideal because of its location, size, and layout."We’ve been building toward this for three years," Lt. Col. Newell said. One of the four projects that will be happening this fall is creating a "digital fortress." Lt. Col. Newell said that means self-learning technology will replace traditional fences and enhance gate security. He painted a picture of what it would look like with extra tech at MCAS Miramar's gate. "[A Marine] is scrutinizing your ID and your face the moment they have with you before they allow you on. While you're cued up in the line waiting, the power of computer vision and machine learning could help us assist in knowing who’s new to the base, who hasn’t come with that vehicle before," Lt. Col. Newell said.Perimeter surveillance will get a boost from Orange County-based defense tech startup, Anduril. The company created Sentry Towers, a compact, self-powered, learning surveillance tool already set up at MCAS Yuma. They plan to set up three towers at MCAS Miramar along the perimeter in the next two to three weeks. The towers will monitor the landscape through video and sensors that map the area."It learns the tipping factors of what is something of interest and what is something not of interest in locations where we don’t have a lot of visibility sometimes," Lt. Col. Newell said. This tech gives Marines physical space and therefore protection during the pandemic, "allows Marines and law enforcement officials to not be in the operations center and be out doing other mission-essential requirements," Declan Lynch, head of strategy and growth, Force Protection, at Anduril said.Lynch said the tech tested at Miramar will translate to protect our service members on the battlefield."I'm really excited about taking the same technology and working with war-fighters in combat and contested environments ... As a former Marine and working with a team full of Marines, we're just excited to stay connected to the Marine Corps mission," says Lynch. The mission, "to win our Nation’s battles swiftly and aggressively in times of crisis." 2666
