Lt. Gen. Laura J. Richardson has succeeded in breaking through a few glass ceilings in the U.S. Army. Now she's set to break a new one.For the first time in U.S. Army Forces Command, or FORSCOM, history, a woman will be leading the largest command in the Army, representing 776,000 soldiers and 96,000 civilians.This may be a first for the Army, but Richardson has had other firsts.She has been with the U.S. Army since 1986, and in 2012 she became the first female deputy commanding general for the 1st Cavalry Division, known as "America's First Team."In 2017, she became second in command to Gen. Robert B. Abrams, when she was named the first female deputy commanding general of FORSCOM in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the U.S. Army reported.Now, Richardson will become the first female commanding general of the U.S. Army FORSCOM as Abrams steps down from his post, reported CNN affiliate WTVD.On Tuesday, Abrams announced he would be leaving his post to become commander of United States Armed Forces Korea. LYON, France (AP) — French police say a Greek Orthodox priest has been shot while closing his church in the city of Lyon, and authorities are hunting for the assailant. A police official says the priest was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries after being hit in the abdomen on Saturday. The official says the priest is a Greek citizen and the attacker was alone and fired from a hunting rifle. On Twitter, the French Interior Ministry wrote "an event is underway near the Jean-Macé sector, in the 7th arrondissement in Lyon. Security and rescue forces are there. (AP) — A diabetic Costa Rican man in federal immigration custody has become the second detainee in Georgia to die from COVID-19 complications after being held at a detention center that has reported more than 150 coronavirus cases.Officials say 70-year-old Jose Guillen-Vega died Monday after being hospitalized since Aug. 1.Guillen-Vega was housed at Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin and is the fifth person to die while in an ICE detention facility nationwide.He had diabetes and hypertension, which ICE critics say made him vulnerable.Critics continue to ask the agency to release at-risk detainees amid the pandemic. 644

MANAGUA, Nicaragua — Hurricane Iota is moving across northern Nicaragua with hurricane strength winds of around 85 mph after making landfall as a dangerous Category 4 storm. Iota came ashore along almost exactly the same stretch of Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast that was devastated by an equally powerful Hurricane Eta just 13 days earlier. Iota had intensified into an extremely dangerous Category 5 storm during the day Monday, but the U.S. National Hurricane Center says it weakened slightly as it neared the coast late Monday and made landfall with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph (250 kph). Eta’s torrential rains saturated the soil in the region, meaning Iota's rains have nowhere to go and could cause deadly landslides.In their 7 a.m. update, the National Hurricane Center said Iota is expected to create "flash flooding, landslides, life-threatening storm surge and powerful winds across portions of Central America Tuesday."The NHC says Iota is moving west, further inland, and will move across Honduras Tuesday night into Wednesday. Hurricane Eta, after making landfall in Nicaragua, spun back out east into the Gulf of Mexico where it regained strength and dropped torrential rains on the western side of Florida and up into the southeast states of the U.S. Iota is expected to continue heading west across Central America, reaching El Salvador and southern Guatemala. 1390
