Rice made the pledge when she met visiting Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan at the White House on Monday, during which they discussed a wide range of issues, such as the situation on the Korean Peninsula and cyber security.
The New York Times reported that Obama and Xi pledged to build "a new model" of relations.
"The Chinese dream, after all, is the dream of the people. We must realize it by closely depending on the people. We must incessantly bring benefits to the people," Xi said in a keynote speech delivered at the country's top legislature on Sunday.
