In 2020, election sites are looking a little different: an art museum, a pro-basketball arena, new mobile voting vehicles and even a bar that combines football with bowling.These are some of the unique polling locations in Atlanta, Georgia, as local government leaders are partnering with those venues to make it easier for people to cast their ballots.“This is so something you would not expect,” said Jon Dilley, general manager of Fowling Warehouse a 25,000 square foot bar that’s being transformed into a unique polling location.Customer Elliot Anderson is excited during this election season to grab a beer and fill out a ballot at Fowling Warehouse.“Just opening up different places to vote,” he said. “That’s always going to be good.”Across Atlanta, new mobile voting vehicles are opening up new opportunities for people living in areas described as “voting deserts.”“This is more of an African American community,” said voter Davonne Reaves of her neighborhood on Atlanta’s east side. “The lines are a lot longer and sometimes that can actually discourage people to vote.”Reaves says this voting process took less than 30 minutes and that these new mobile polling buses help encourage her community to get more involved with politics.“I think with this bus, this is actually going to create a movement,” she said. “We’ll probably see more of these types of buses and more creative locations for people to get out and vote.”Creative ways to make sure people’s votes are collected in a timely manner.“When it comes down to it, even the most engaged voters may be not be able to spend two or three hours in line,” said Robert Preuhs, Ph.D., chair of the political science department at MSU Denver.Preuhs says more options give more voters a greater chance at getting involved in the political process.“Having more polling places, whether they’re unique or not, close to them really is going to matter in terms of the ability for people to make their voice heard,” he said.More voices heard and more votes counted for what could turn out to be the most unique election in U.S. history. 2097

In an old traditional historic church building sits a seemingly nontraditional religion."We don’t pretend that we’ve invented something new; we just gave it a title and a safe place for people to use cannabis in their spiritual journeys to come here, and worship, and pray,” said co-founder Steve Berke. “We don’t tell them who to pray to. It’s really an open-minded spiritual community."Their religion is Elevationism. Berke says it's about elevating one's self to the best version of self."While we do believe that cannabis can help you on your way to your spiritual journey, it’s also okay if you don’t use cannabis," said Berke.He says they have people all over the world come to their church. People of all political views, races, and even other religious beliefs have joined their congregation."Elevationism is not a replacement to your existing faith. It’s more of a supplement to it. You can be a Christian and an Elevationist. You can be Jewish and an Elevationist. You can be a Buddhist and an Elevationist," said Berke.Before COVID-19, like any other church, they would hold a Sunday service in their sanctuary with speakers, music, and lessons to take away. But unlike a traditional church, the consumption of cannabis was allowed."We certainly encourage people to try cannabis, and if it doesn’t work for you, that’s OK. You don’t have to use cannabis. We don’t tell you when to use it. We don’t tell you how much to use it," said Berke.Since the pandemic, they’ve had to stop the Sunday service but have continued with their daily BEYOND, a guided meditation paired with a light show. It’s family-friendly, no consumption allowed, and open to the public."Everybody takes something different from the meditation and that’s the goal. The goal is some people will take one quote of that mediation and apply it to their lives," said Berke.And just like any other church, Berke says they give back to their community."We’ve led by example. We’ve volunteered picking up trash in the neighborhood, volunteering at animal shelters, feeding the homeless. We do all of the things that a normal church does without preaching a dogma inside our church," said Berke.For now, they have one location in Denver but plan to expand to Los Angeles next year. They're also working on more guided meditations."We’ll have BEYOND Happiness, BEYOND love, BEYOND doubt, so all these different themes encouraging people to think and question existing establishment thought and really encourage their spiritual paths and journeys," explained Berke.Berke says the one golden rule of their ministry is similar to other traditional religions: treat others the way you want to be treated."We’re all one human race. We may have different beliefs. We may believe in different gods, but that’s okay, right? Because we’re all spiritual and we all ultimately want this world to be a better place for the next generations," said Berke. 2920

In 2016, President Obama used the Affordable Care Act to extend federal sex discrimination protections to people who identify as transgender.But after a recent move by the Trump administration, some of those protections are now gone.“What happened with the recent Trump administration ruling is that they basically said they were taking out that definition of sex discrimination and stated that it only applied to a person’s birth sex and couldn’t be applied to their gender identity and that they were no longer going to enforce any protections on the basis of gender identity," said Dr. Eliabeth Kvach. “I think there’s something to be said, to think about what it’s like to be a person where the government says you don’t deserve to get accessible health care,” said Andrew MillerKvach and Miller both work at Denver Health in Colorado. Both call the recent rule change in DC a direct threat to the lives of transgender men and women.“We have for example, 300 patients on our list to be able to receive vaginoplasty or gender confirming surgery for transgender women. And if you’re waiting years to get that surgery and then all of a sudden you’re worried about whether your insurance is going to cover it, that is enormously psychologically devastating to people,” said Kvach.“I think that we’re already seeing that with cases coming out of hospitals denying care to transgender and non-binary folks," said Miller.“I certainly think that it is dangerous to the lives of transgender and non-binary people,” said Kvach.Denver Health is a LGBTQ+ Center of Excellence. For the health system it means any patient regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or other LGBTQ identification can receive treatment from any doctor for any health need“LGBTQ health care isn’t specialty care, it’s just health care,” said Miller.And while Miller is an employee at Denver Health, this is an extra important issue for him personally.“I identify as a transgender man, and as I said before, my pronouns are he, him, his. I was born female, and at a certain point in my life, I recognized that being a woman didn’t fit for me, it was like I was living this false life,” said MillerFor him, and many trans people, being called the wrong name or the wrong pronoun isn’t just a simple mistake“When we say hey, my name is Andrew, that’s what I go by, but you call me my birth name, what I hear is, 'It doesn’t matter that I told you my name.' You get to be more of an expert on me than I get to be on me. Why should I feel safe that you’re going to actually take care of me, if you can’t even call me my name?” Miller said.For trans people around the country, this rule change might mean they could be denied hormone therapy or gender reassignment surgery. Procedures the transgender and health care providers who treat them, deem medically necessary.“Medical treatment with hormones and with surgery help a person’s body align with who they are, with their gender identity,” Kvach said.But it also means they have to be worried about being denied treatment for anything from a sore throat to life saving surgery.“I’m from the south, I think about it all the time. What it would be like to go back home and have a medical emergency and not be able to get care. To be a person denied health care, and it’s terrifying,” said Miller.And that increased anxiety can lead to bad health outcomes from avoiding preventative treatment to suicide.A survey from the Trevor Project released this month shows that more than half of kids who identify as transgender and nonbinary have seriously considered suicide in the last 12 months.While this rule change may be disheartening to many, institutions like Denver Health reaffirm their commitment to treating transgender people, like people“I want folks to be able to go to the doctor and feel safe. (KGTV) — Wednesday, Imperial Beach city leaders unanimously approved a one-cent sale tax measure for the November ballot.The city says, if enacted, the measure would, "enable the City to prepare for medical or catastrophic emergencies including preparing local first responder services, updating emergency communication systems and maintaining rapid 911 emergency response capacity."The potential one-cent sales tax increase would also support restoring the city's long-term emergency funding that is being used to address the coronavirus pandemic."Even through these challenging times, the City must continue to address challenges with clean, safe neighborhoods and addressing homelessness to maintain Imperial Beach as a quality community to live, work and raise a family for all residents," said Assistant City Manager, Erika Cortez-Martinez.The measure includes accountability and transparency requirements, including public disclosure of spending and independent audits, the city says.If approved it would go into effect in the spring of 2021. 1079
