AVENAL, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say an inmate at a central California prison died of complications from the coronavirus Saturday, becoming the state’s 79th person to have a fatal case of COVID-19 while they were incarcerated. The Avenal State Prison inmate died at a hospital. The prisoner’s name was not released. There have been 15,872 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the state prison system. Advocates say jails and prisons nationwide are prime locations for the virus to spread between inmates and staff. Officials have released hundreds of inmates to decrease jail and prison populations across the country during the pandemic. 648

At least 48 people were shot within a 24-hour span on Sunday in New York, capping off a violent Fourth of July weekend, police said.Among those shot, 10 of them were fatal.Since Friday, there were 63 victims of gun violence, continuing the rising trend this summer.Most of the shootings were on Sunday, though there were a number of incidents on Saturday, including one in which no one was hurt. Police opened fire in Astoria, Queens on Saturday night when they spotted an individual shooting at someone else. A suspect was taken into custody in that incident.Police also witnessed violence first hand outside the 40th precinct in the Bronx Saturday night. A bullet pierced the front window of their marked cruiser.While in Brooklyn, a flaming firecracker was tossed inside a patrol car with an officer sitting inside.In a pair of tweets from Manhattan police commanders, the chiefs called out city leaders, saying the city is under attack, and they are demanding action.Former police commissioner Ray Kelly criticized Mayor Bill de Blasio for limiting anti-crime units as “crime is raging out of control in New York City.”Police are searching for suspects in multiple shootings.According to the NYPD, there were 575 incidents with 705 victims from Jan. 1 through July 4 of 2020. There were 369 incidents with 423 victims in the same time period last year. As the nation debates on whether to reopen schools this fall, President Donald Trump said schools should “100%” be open this fall, despite concerns from educator unions and others over the spread of the coronavirus.During his coronavirus news conference on Wednesday, Trump was asked whether he planned on sending his son and grandchildren back to school this fall.“Yes, I am comfortable with that,” Trump said.“I would like to see the schools open. Open 100% and we will do it safely, we will do carefully but when you look at the statistics -- I just read having to do with children and safety ---- they are very impressive. They have very strong immune systems,” Trump added.Trump said that it is his belief that children are less likely to spread the virus. But research thus far has not been conclusive to back Trump’s claims.A study released from South Korea and published by the CDC found that while children under age 9 were less likely to spread the virus, youth ages 10 through 19 were just as likely as adults of spreading the virus.The study also found that closing schools in several Chinese cities, including Wuhan, showed that school closure and social distancing significantly reduced the rate of COVID-19 among contacts of school-aged children. “The role of household transmission of SARS-CoV-2 amid reopening of schools and loosening of social distancing underscores the need for a time-sensitive epidemiologic study to guide public health policy,” the researchers wrote.The American Federation of Teachers this week pointed toward a three-point plan that the US should implement for reopening schools.“Our plan details three conditions essential for schools to reopen,” wrote Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers. “First, the average daily community infection rate among those tested for the coronavirus must be very low. (New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has required the rate not to exceed 5 percent for at least 14 days.) Second, schools must employ public health protocols, including 6-feet social distancing, masks, deep cleaning and handwashing stations. Third, adequate resources must be available to enact these safeguards, including funding for additional nurses, guidance counselors and teachers to reduce class size.”Weingarten said that Trump has politicized reopening schools, and she called on Congress to approve giving schools additional funding to reopen. Attorneys representing the state of Missouri announced Monday they will drop a felony invasion of privacy charge against Gov. Eric Greitens, after the attorney prosecuting the case was named as a witness in the trial.However, the decision might only mark a temporary victory for Greitens. Prosecutors said they plan to name either a special prosecutor or one of St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner's assistants to refile the charge and move forward with the case. 474

As Tropical Storm Laura began setting its sights on Puerto Rico, and eventually, the Florida coast, Tropical Storm Marco formed late Friday.Marco has top winds of 40 MPH, but is expected to gain strength by the time it reaches the Gulf of Mexico. As of late Friday, however, the storm is not forecast to reach hurricane strength.The storm is then expected to head for the Texas or Louisiana coast.In the meantime, Marco is expected to hit Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula this weekend.Tropical Storm Laura is also headed toward the Gulf of Mexico, but instead of approaching from the South like Marco, Laura is coming from the east.Laura has top winds of 45 MPH as of late Friday. Before reaching the Gulf of Mexico, it is expected to skirt Puerto Rico and Hispaniola and Florida.The combination of Marco and Laura could cause havoc for emergency managers next week. Laura could two US mainland landfalls – the Florida east coast and somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico. 968
