A 19-year-old pregnant woman who vanished last month was found dead in a Chicago home, authorities said. Police said they believe she was killed and her unborn baby was forcibly removed.Marlen Ochoa-Lopez was nine-months pregnant when she disappeared on April 23. Her body was found this week, and the cause of death was homicide by strangulation, the Cook County medical examiner's office said Wednesday.The day she was reported missing, a call for help for a baby came from the same address where Ocha-Lopez's body was later found."We believe that she was murdered, and we believe that the baby was forcibly removed following that murder," said Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department.Detectives have detained four people for questioning, he said. Tattoos have been around for thousands of years, primarily as an artform. But what if they had a purpose, beyond just aesthetics? “I think that we can upgrade tattoo inks to give people new abilities,” says Carson Bruns, a mechanical engineer professor at the University of Colorado. Bruns is also a tattoo aficionado. "I got my first tattoo when I was 19 years old, and I’ve been addicted to tattoos ever since," Bruns says.He spends his days in a lab, working to bring an ancient artform into the 21st Century. "My idea is that, by adding new function, new properties to the tattoo inks, that tattoos could potentially be used for more than just art," he says. Bruns is focused on a specific type of tattoo ink, one that would embed tiny microcapsules filled with certain material underneath the skin. One of his most promising developments would fill those capsules with UV dye. It’d essentially be a tattoo that tells you when you need to apply sunscreen. "So our tattoo, anytime you can see it, anytime it's visible to you, that's a sign your skin is dangerously exposed to UV light and its increasing your risk to skin cancer,” Bruns explains. Other types of inks would be heat-sensitive, like the squares he's tested on his own skin. Those would only appear when your body reached a certain temperature. "A tattooable thermometer, made of these heat sensitive tattoo inks could be a way to make it more accessible for people to read their body temp and check up on their own health," he says. Bruns says the possibilities are endless. "I like to joke tattoos can give you superpowers,” he says. “They can give our skin new properties we don't currently have."Bruns hopes that one day, we might even be able to come up with tattoo inks that could conduct electricity or even tell us our blood sugar or blood alcohol levels. 1843

There are tens of thousands of sexual assault cases that not only go untold, but unsolved. Joyful Heart Foundation is a non-profit fighting to get backlogged rape kits sitting on evidence shelves tested in order to clear more cases. "No matter where they live and no matter what their zip code is, they have rights to have their kit tested,” says Ilse Knecht, director of policy and advocacy at the foundation. But why aren't they being tested in the first place? “One of the biggest factors is rape is not prioritized as the violent crime that it is, Knecht says. “So, unless somebody asks for that kit to be sent forward, such as a detective or prosecutor, it could sit there forever.” Knecht says factors such as money and resources also play a role. Reports show many of the cases are being suspended instead of closed, but that’s changing, slowly. “Just had a big win in New York state,” says Knecht. “Gov. Cuomo just signed a bill, the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill of Rights, that allows survivors, among many other things, to know the status of their rape kit.” During the 2017 legislative session, the Joyful Heart Foundation helped pass 17 bills in 15 states to push rape kit backlog testing. It was a major step toward justice, and Knecht says they’re not done fighting.“It's really important that every rape kit that has been sitting on the shelf for years is taken off the shelf and know that every single kit that is collected is tested in a timely manner,” she says. 1500

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the National Guard has been “activated” in New York, California and Washington state to help the three states hit hard by the COVID-19 crisis. Trump made the announcement during Sunday’s coronavirus task force briefing, adding that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be covering the cost. A FEMA official at the briefing said that both New York and Washington have already been approved for major disaster declarations to allow the federal government to more seamlessly provide supplies. California’s request is being considered. Trump also said that the Navy hospital ship Mercy will be dispatched to Los Angeles to help to help relieve the state’s overwhelmed hospitals. Non-coronavirus patients will be treated on board.
