LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A driver was taken to the hospital after crashing into a palm tree and a light pole in Lakeside Monday morning. According to authorities, the crash happened along Winter Gardens Boulevard at Winter Gardens Drive around 7 a.m. Police say the driver was heading down Winter Gardens Boulevard when, for an unknown reason, he crashed into a rock and mailbox before slamming into a palm tree and a light pole. Nearby witnesses, one of whom is a nurse, rushed to help the man. He was taken to the hospital in unknown condition. Authorities say speed appears to be a factor in the crash. 616

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. (AP) — The hue and cry over the placement of a bright American flag graphic on police cars has leaders in a small coastal Southern California city considering whether to tone down the design.The Laguna Beach City Council will decide Tuesday night whether to keep the current logo or choose an alternative.Some residents feel the red, white and blue design is too aggressive while others are surprised anyone would object to the American flag.Mayor Pro Tem Steve Dicterow told the Los Angeles Times the council is simply facing "a very narrow decision" about the brightness of the colors, but that the issue has devolved into a broader national conversation about patriotism.He said he has received hundreds of emails from people around the country, mostly in support of keeping the flag designs on the car.The council agreed earlier this year to repaint its squad cars in black and white with the stars and stripes running through the word "police" on the doors. The city has 11 police vehicles.The proposed graphic the council approved in February was a more muted version of the design that now appears on the cars."Clearly, the way it looks on the car is not what anyone expected it to look like," Dicterow said. (KGTV) — A personnel appeal board rejected an appeal filed by former La Mesa Police officer Matthew Dages, who was fired over a viral video showing him push a man into a seated position at a trolley stop.Dages was terminated in August over the video that surfaced in June, showing him push a black man into a sitting position on a bench, and handcuffing him and arresting him at Grossmont Trolley Station. The man, 23-year-old Amaurie Johnson, was told he was arrested for assaulting an officer.RELATED: Protesters call for transparency from La Mesa Police DepartmentAfter bodycam video of the arrest was released, La Mesa Police Department dropped charges against Johnson and placed Dages on administrative leave pending an investigation.Dages was eventually fired by former La Mesa Police Chief Walt Vasquez. The city said in a release that the Personnel Appeals Board of the City of La Mesa has "upheld the decision of the Police Chief to terminate the employment of Dages. LA MESA (CNS) - One person was killed in a two-vehicle crash on westbound Interstate 8 in La Mesa and lanes of the freeway were blocked this morning until further notice.The crash occurred near state Route 125 at 9:55 p.m. Friday, according to the California Highway Patrol.A witness told officers one vehicle was being driven recklessly just before hitting the center divider wall.The crash blocked three westbound lanes of the freeway and a SigAlert was issued at 10:30 p.m., the CHP said.The age, gender, and name of the victim was not disclosed. 557

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - One of the witnesses to Sunday's fatal drive-by shooting in La Jolla happened to be a trauma expert."I did see people at that point running all over the place," neighbor Michelle Carcel said. Steps from the crime scene, Carcel recounted what she saw hours prior. One woman was killed, and three men were shot on a sleepy street in La Jolla. San Diego Police said all victims were outside a house party on Draper Avenue when the shooting happened. RELATED: 1 dead in shooting at party in La Jolla"By 9 o'clock everything is shut down, so when we hear kids having a party and stuff, we often say it is a very nice thing. It is a quiet calm thing. So to have this occur is completely out of the ordinary," Carcel said. The scene was so foreign to neighbors in this area but all too familiar for Carcel. As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Carcel often deals with and speaks about gun violence and trauma. "I've talked about Parkland shooting. I've talked about the Orlando shooting. And to have it happen here, to have it happen here so close to home, is still so jarring and so rattling and really brings the message that it can happen anywhere," Dr. Carcel said. Carcel now wears both the witness hat and the clinical psychologist hat. She is giving advice to everyone involved. "This is going to have acute side effects," Dr. Carcel said. "You're going to have post-traumatic stress that could occur within a period of time. Just monitoring and making sure that they are getting the counseling and support that they need."She hopes for the end of senseless shootings, even if it means she may be out of a job. "Our children are dying," Dr. Carcel said. "Innocent people are dying, I don't know what the solution is, but I hope we come together as a community to figure it out."Dr. Carcel said she will conduct a trauma healing circle for her neighbors at a later time. 1900
