LAS VEGAS — For the first time in 20 years, the Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug for the treatment of the flu.  The antiviral drug, called Xofluza, is a single dose treatment.  It is for patients who are 12 or older.  The drug must be taken within 48 hours of symptoms, according to the F.D.A. "Very exciting that we have another drug on the market," said Dr. Daliah Wachs.Xofluza is said to be as effective as Tamiflu in alleviating symptoms.  "Do I think it's a lifesaver? Potentially yes," said Dr. Wachs.Unlike earlier drugs, Xofluza is expected to work against drug-resistant strains. It will also shorten the length of the flu."The longer you have the flu, the more you are at risk for complications," said Dr. Wachs.Doctors say it is still critically important for everyone to get vaccinated, especially children and the elderly.  900

LACEY, Wash. — A man suspected of fatally shooting a supporter of a right-wing group in Portland, Oregon, last week was killed late Thursday as a fugitive task force tried to arrest him in Lacey, Washington.According to the U.S. Marshals Service, 48-year-old Michael Forest Reinoehl was killed as a federal task force attempted an arrest. He was wanted by Multnomah County (Oregon) Circuit Court on murder charges after allegedly shooting and killing 39-year-old Aaron "Jay" Danielson, a member of the right-wing group "Patriot Prayer," last Friday during clashing protests in Portland.According to the Marshals, a task force located Reinoehl in Olympia, Washington and attempted to take him into custody peacefully. The federal agents claim Reinoehl brandished a firearm during the encounter, and the Marshals returned with gunfire.Reinoehl was pronounced dead at the scene. None of the task force members were injured.On Thursday afternoon, Reinoehl told Vice News that he shot Danielson in self-defense on Saturday, believing that he and a friend were about to be stabbed."You know, lots of lawyers suggest that I shouldn't even be saying anything, but I feel it's important that the world at least gets a little bit of what's really going on," Reinoehl told Vice News. "I had no choice. I mean, I, I had a choice. I could have sat there and watched them kill a friend of mine of color. But I wasn't going to do that."Portland has seen protests nightly for about 100 straight days, dating back to the Memorial Day weekend death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. While some demonstrations have been peaceful, a small area of downtown Portland has been marred by vandalism and violence for several straight months. Protesters have been calling for an end to police brutality and systemic racism in policing.The demonstrations have been a flashpoint in national politics, as President Donald Trump has repeatedly insisted that Portland Mayor Ted Wheelers and Oregon Gov. (KGTV) - The family of an 11-year-old boy who was killed in the Easter bombings in Sri Lanka held a celebration of life ceremony in Lakeside Wednesday night.They gathered on a trail in Oak Oasis County Park to remember Kieran Shafritz de Zoysa, on what would have been his 12th birthday.About a mile down the trail, they unveiled a new bench with a plaque in his memory, telling future hikers to “Be like Kieran.”“Kieran’s mindset was always about helping others,” said Alex Arrow, his father who lives in Lakeside.“He was the greatest ray of light that my life has ever seen,” said Dhulsini de Zoysa, Kieran’s mother.Both parents described him as curious, intelligent and empathetic.“He was just a sponge. He took in everything regardless of the topic,” said his mother.Arrow said his son had dreams of becoming a neuroscientist, with the goal of finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease. “I also grieve for what the world lost,” said Arrow. “That piece of shrapnel from the suicide bomber struck down a future champion against the unknowns of the brain.”In total, 259 people were killed in a series of coordinated bombings on April 21 in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo. 1202

LEAWOOD, Kan. - Walking down the streets, grocery stores, and airports, face coverings are the current reality.For his bar mitzvah project, Leawood Middle School seventh-grader, Jonah Stein, wanted to add a little more to masks."These are MaskerAIDS, they're basically necklaces for your masks," Jonah said. "It's when you're not wearing them, they kind of just hanging down so they're not in the way. But they're also functional when you need them."As he sells his MaskerAIDS, Jonah says all the proceeds benefit Jewish Family Services."At the start of the pandemic, you could just see lines of people trying to get food, just waiting for food to be put in their cars," he said.Jonah, who volunteers at Jewish Family Services, says he wanted to help families in need who are food insecure and going through a difficult time."Jonah is just such a great example of one person making a huge impact," JFS older adult services director, Laura Gilman said.From produce to toiletries and protein, Gilman said she's seen the need grow."We at least doubled during COVID. We're serving over 500 families a month," she said. "And then by the end of this year, we're going to serve about, between October, November, December, about 1,500 households, so that's not individuals, that's households."The MaskerAID proceeds go towards the Kesher KC Bags, which Jonah also helped bring to Kansas City."Someone we know in Minnesota, it was at their synagogue, and I kind of told JFS about it, and they used the idea and went with it," Jonah said. "They are bags that have essentials of, like, heat up meals and food and then they also have some resources.""These bags are a really awesome way for us to create a stopgap for people," Gilman said. "We operate by appointment only because we are a choice and voice pantry."Jonah's goal was to raise ,800 for JFS, but he underestimated himself and his work."It's been amazing," he said. "We've raised ,600 dollars and still climbing for JFS."Thousands of dollars have been raised to help serve families he may never meet."Even though I might not meet them, I know it kind of either brings a smile to their face and it fills their stomach," Jonah said. LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. (AP) — The hue and cry over the placement of a bright American flag graphic on police cars has leaders in a small coastal Southern California city considering whether to tone down the design.The Laguna Beach City Council will decide Tuesday night whether to keep the current logo or choose an alternative.Some residents feel the red, white and blue design is too aggressive while others are surprised anyone would object to the American flag.Mayor Pro Tem Steve Dicterow told the Los Angeles Times the council is simply facing "a very narrow decision" about the brightness of the colors, but that the issue has devolved into a broader national conversation about patriotism.He said he has received hundreds of emails from people around the country, mostly in support of keeping the flag designs on the car.The council agreed earlier this year to repaint its squad cars in black and white with the stars and stripes running through the word "police" on the doors. The city has 11 police vehicles.The proposed graphic the council approved in February was a more muted version of the design that now appears on the cars."Clearly, the way it looks on the car is not what anyone expected it to look like," Dicterow said. "I think it's reasonable that we're going to look at it again so that whatever we (approve) is exactly what we put on the car." 1372
