SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This year, July Fourth went off with a bang. San Diego Police said Monday that the department received hundreds of calls regarding illegal fireworks this holiday weekend.Despite canceled fireworks shows throughout the city, the department received 323 calls due to fireworks this year.The figure represents a significant uptick since last year, when the city received only 76 calls about fireworks.Despite the increase in calls, San Diego Police say they aren’t aware of any injuries due to the displays.The report comes after the City of San Diego announced that it would cancel this year’s Big Bay Boom to help halt the spread of COVID-19.According to San Diego Fire-Rescue, all consumer fireworks are illegal in the City of San Diego.That list includes sparklers, firecrackers, cherry bombs, bottle rockets, and even poppers.The National Fire Protection Association says that fireworks account for more than half of reported fires in the U.S. on Independence Day. 994

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The trial started Wednesday for two San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies facing criminal charges after an arrest in Vista. Deputies Nicholas Morgan and Joshua Nahan are charged with assault for what District Attorney Summer Stephan calls illegal actions during the encounter. Gerardo Martinez Jr. and his father were taken into custody last May after the deputies responded to a domestic violence call. RELATED: Controversial video of sheriff's deputies prompts investigationMartinez Jr.’s girlfriend had called 911 to report being punched by her boyfriend. Part of the 911 call was played for jurors during opening statements Tuesday. The panel also saw cell phone video of the arrest recorded by a neighbor. The now-viral video shows Deputy Nahan push Martinez Sr. into a fence while handcuffed. Martinez Jr. was repeatedly struck in the head by Deputy Morgan while on a concrete sidewalk. “Law enforcement officers hold a position of trust in our community and are required to abide by the rules in the exercise of their powers. The evidence on which the charges are based shows the force used by the two deputies exceeded the legal line, violating that public trust. For justice to thrive, it is important that no one is above the law,” Stephan said in November. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego International Auto Show announced Wednesday that its 2020 lineup was cancelled.The show was set to take place from December 31 through January 3.“After careful and extensive consideration of the health risks and other factors resulting from COVID-19, the New Car Dealers Association San Diego County will be unable to hold and unfortunately must cancel the San Diego International Auto Show,” the New Car Dealers Association of San Diego County said.The next event is scheduled to take place from December 30, 2021 through January 2, 2022.“As much as we wanted to move forward with the show for all of those who eagerly anticipate it each year, the outbreak of COVID-19 and the pandemic has resulted in a situation where we are unable to hold the show. Of course, the health and safety of all of the workers, exhibitors and attendees who make the auto show such a special event are of vital importance,” said Dean Mansfield, president of the New Car Dealers Association San Diego County, which owns and produces the San Diego International Auto Show. “And given the incredible amount of planning exhibitors must do long in advance of an event of this size and the expenses incurred by all parties, we have endeavored to provide notice of cancellation as soon as reasonably possible,” continued Mansfield. 1346

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The woman who stole a car with two children inside before driving to the U.S-Mexico border in 2018 has been sentenced to 13 years in prison. Police say Leslie Esparanza Saenz, 27, stole a car with an 8-year-old and 3-year-old inside outside a Cricket Wireless store on the 200 block of Euclid Avenue April 9, 2018. According to police, the children’s father parked the gold Hyundai Excel outside the store and went into the business by himself, leaving the vehicle unlocked. Moments later, Saenz got into the car and drove off on Imperial Avenue. RELATED: Not guilty plea from woman accused of stealing car with children insideThe vehicle was spotted later that afternoon when the Hyundai arrived at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. There, federal agents who had gotten a be-on-the-lookout bulletin regarding the auto theft and kidnapping took the driver - who was later identified as Saenz -- into custody without incident. Authorities then reunited the children, who had suffered no injuries during the ordeal, with their father and returned his car to him, Roman said. 1096
