SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new program at the University of San Diego will give students a crash course in cybersecurity, one of the fastest-growing fields in the region.USD partnered with online education company Fullstack to offer the 26-week course. They say people who take it will be ready to apply for the thousands of available jobs that companies in San Diego are having a hard time filling."When they're done, they could go into software engineering, software development, web development, cybersecurity," says Andy Drotos, USD's Director of Professional and Public Programs. "There's a long list of jobs available in all of those areas."According to a 2019 study by the San Diego Cyber Center of Excellence, there are more than 150 cybersecurity firms across San Diego. They create 8,450 jobs -- that's an 11% jump from 2016. And the average salary in the field is around ,000 per year.RELATED: Cybersecurity jobs skyrocket in San DiegoBut, industry experts say they have a hard time finding qualified candidates to fill those jobs. Some estimate there are around 4,000 open positions in the cybersecurity field."There's a demand for staff who have previous work experience and can apply that to new roles," says Andy Haas, a Chief Engineer at Booz Allen Hamilton. He says his company is always looking for people to fill cybersecurity roles."It really is a growing need across companies, across industries here in the region," says Haas.The boot camp-style course at USD has classes that are taken online, twice a week. There's also a Saturday class that meets both in-person and online. Drotos says it's perfect for people looking to make a career change."If you have an affinity for technology, or you have an interest, you don't need a degree," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man was hospitalized after becoming stuck in a cargo elevator shaft at a downtown grocery store.San Diego Fire-Rescue was called to Ralph's grocery store on G St. just after 7:30 p.m. on Saturday to a report of someone stuck in the elevator. Crews arrived to find a man who had been working on the elevator trapped in the elevator shaft.Firefighters worked to free the man and take him to a nearby hospital. The extent of his injuries wasn't immediately known.A witness who works at the grocery store said the man was working on the cargo shaft when someone pressed the elevator button, trapping the man inside. 640

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local contractor is facing criminal charges for allegedly taking customers money and doing little to no work.On Monday Stephen Hage Jr. plead not guilty to charges ranging from grand theft to improper home improvement contract procedures.According to the prosecutor Hage allegedly took down payments on home improvement contracts, and after getting the money disappeared after performing little to no work.In November, a Team 10 investigation discovered some customers who said they signed a contract with American Pride Enterprises, paid thousands of dollars up front and were left with little or nothing. James Francois said he paid Hage more than ,000 for a patio.“He never showed up, never delivered any material, never did an hour of work,” Francois told 10News in November.The Contractors State License Board revoked American Pride Enterprises' license for non-compliance with an arbitration award in July of 2018.After the hearing Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin asked Hage if he had a comment about the allegations. Hage’s attorney said they had no comment. Hage is scheduled to be back in court in May. 1144

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A hearing that will decide where to place the so-called “bolder than most” rapist is set to take place in October.According to documents sent to 10News, the Department of State Hospitals proposed that Alvin Quarles live at 43050 Desert Ranch Road in Jacumba Hot Springs.Quarles was convicted and sentenced to 50 years in prison in 1989 after being convicted of attacking and raping four women.RELATED: Alvin Quarles, 'Bolder than Most' rapist, to be released from prisonIn 2013, Quarles became eligible for parole but was instead transferred to a state hospital because one of his victims objected.He earned his nickname because he made his victim’s male partners watch or participate in the sex crimes.“I don’t believe he’s suitable for release at this time,” Dr. Cecilia Groman, who created a report on Quarles’ rehabilitation, testified at a release hearing.RELATED: 'Bolder than most' rapist up for conditional releaseBefore the placement is finalized, the public is able to comment on the proposed location through September 5. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report found that San Diego is one of the worst cities to buy a home, but a nearby city may give San Diegans hope. The report by GOBankRates lists San Diego as one of the 15 worst placed to buy a home in the country. The site says home prices in San Diego have increased by 1.8 percent over the last year. In the last five years, home values have grown by a little more than 33 percent. “The populous city of San Diego may be home to over 1.3 million people, but home values grow slower than some of the smaller, neighboring cities. San Diego only saw home values increase at a rate of 1.8% over the past year,” the site says. A better option, the website says, is National City, where home values have increased over the last five years by more than 49 percent. “National City offers a smaller footprint for a better value. The median home value is an impressive 5,500, which is almost 0,000 cheaper than San Diego.”If you are considering buying in San Diego, there are options. A new housing development is going up in Otay Mesa geared toward first-time buyers. There's also hope for teachers.
