It's been over four months since Hurricane Michael slammed into the Florida Panhandle, but driving around some parts of Panama City, many would think it had just been four days since the storm made landfall. Especially if you saw Shelly Summers' backyard, which is now a tent community of 24 displaced strangers. “And we have more coming,” says Summers. Summers has been helping those whose homes were destroyed. "That's just what you're supposed to do,” she says. “How can you go home and shut your door and know that there are people sleeping in the woods? How can you be OK with that? That's not right." The tents have power, heat and even mattresses. Summers and her husband even built an extra shower. Summers and her husband won’t accept payment. “She won’t take it!” says one tent occupant Brittany Pitts. Instead, residents have found small ways to show their gratitude, like carving a fairy house into what was Summers’ favorite tree before the storm. But Pitts still can't help but think that no one should be living like this, especially this long after the storm. She feels the rest of the country has forgotten the victims of Hurricane Michael."You really see just how much people don't care,” Pitts says. Summers agrees, "I feel like the day after, we were forgotten about. It doesn't make me mad. It makes me sad, because that's not how it should be." TJ Dargan with FEMA’s Hurricane Michael Response Team says if residents feel forgotten, it’s through no fault of FEMA, which to date has contributed 6 million in rental assistance. “Well, FEMA is certainly focused here,” Dargan says. “We have a lot of people, and we're pouring a lot of money into this community. So no, FEMA certainly hasn't forgotten about this. The federal government hasn't forgotten about this.” But the fact that Congress has yet to fund any emergency relief for Hurricane Michael frustrates local residents, as well as local politicians.Until there’s more help, Summers believes the tents in her backyard will be her new normal for years to come, but it’s a challenge she says she'll gladly accept. 2108

James Wiseman, the freshman basketball star for the University of Memphis who accepted payment in 2017 from his future college coach for his family's housing, has been suspended for 11 additional games and has been ordered to pay ,500. Wiseman has already missed one game, totally his suspension to 12 games.Collegiate athletes are barred from making money off their name, image and likeness, and universities compensate basketball players with free tuition, room and board. It is unknown if Wiseman will be able to come up with the funds necessary to continue his collegiate career following his suspension. Wiseman's punishment came as a result of his college coach, former NBA star Penny Hardaway, giving Wiseman's family ,500 to help pay for Wiseman's family to move to Memphis. Hardaway was then the coach of an AAU squad in Memphis, and wanted to Wiseman to join his team.A year later in 2018, Hardaway was given the top job at the University of Memphis. But it was Hardaway's past connection to Memphis as a donor that made the payment to Wiseman improper in the eye's of the NCAA. After being ruled ineligible entering the 2019 season, Wiseman sued to be reinstated before the season. A judge issued an injunction, legally forcing Memphis to play Wiseman despite him being ineligible. After playing three games, Wiseman dropped the suit. The NCAA said that Wiseman playing three games despite being ineligible was considered as part of the penalty. "The benefit was impermissible because of Hardaway’s status as a Memphis booster," the NCAA said in a statement. "Hardaway had made donations to the school in the past, including million to help build the Penny Hardaway Athletic Hall of Fame at the school. LATHROP, Calif. – It’s a common trope for firefighters to rescue cats from trees, but you rarely hear of dogs getting into that kind of sticky situation.However, that was the case for a German Shepard in Northern California on Saturday.The Lathrop Manteca Fire District says the pup chased a cat up a tree and then found itself stuck in the high branches. Luckily, firefighters with the department’s Engine 35 were called to the scene and managed to rescue the dog.
