SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In honor of Veterans Day, dozens of volunteers found a way to give back to current active duty military service members.The organization Waves of Appreciation packed thousands of "Appreciation bags" filled with snacks for service members traveling through San Diego during the holidays.Volunteers fill the bags assembly line style. This program started in 2011 when the founder of the event saw a military service member traveling alone during the holidays, exhausted and hungry. Since then volunteers have handed out more than 24,000 bags.Waves of Appreciation is looking for volunteers to pass out the goodie bags at Lindbergh Field in December in time for the holidays. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Backers of the two competing plans to replace the stadium site in Mission Valley are making their final pitches to voters in a campaign in which each side has spent millions of dollars."We've learned a lot about the politics of San Diego," said Nick Stone, Project Manager for Soccer City, which is Measure E on the ballot.Stone and his team of developers want the centerpiece of the land to be a new stadium for a Major League Soccer team. Measure E also includes promises for new housing, retail, an entertainment complex, and San Diego River park."That's what people care about," Stone told 10News in an interview the day before the election. "They want to know they're getting fair value, that something's going to happen, and that we're going to live up to the commitments we're making. And we are."Should Measure G win, the city would sell the land to the CSU system with plans for a new west campus for San Diego State University. The centerpiece to this plan is also a stadium, in this case, for the Aztecs football team. SDSU West also includes housing, retail, and a river park, along with new research and classroom space and a science center."San Diegans want their kids and their grandkids to be able to have a great education at San Diego State University. And they know that SDSU needs to expand in order for that to happen," said Yes on G spokesperson Laura Fink.Fink points to Measure G's unique coalition of supporters. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two tropical storms bearing down on the Eastern Pacific have forced a Norwegian Bliss cruise ship to abandon its original route and stop in San Diego.The stopover for the cruise ship came just before 7 a.m. Wednesday. The ship was originally scheduled to sail from Los Angeles to several ports in Mexico but was forced to change that route due to tropical storms Willa and Vicente.The new route has the cruise ship heading for San Francisco to San Diego to Ensenada, Mexico. The ship is scheduled to depart from San Diego at 6 p.m. Wednesday.Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement that guests were alerted to the modified itinerary as soon as possible."Due to Hurricane Willa and Tropical Storm Vincente in the Eastern Pacific, we modified Norwegian Bliss’ itinerary from Los Angeles," the cruise line said. "Our onboard team is working to ensure the best vacation experience possible given these weather-related changes."Tropical storm Willa was downgraded from a Category 5 Hurricane Wednesday, but still made landfall with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — UC San Diego was granted a temporary use permit by the city council in National City to use El Toyon Park to conduct a clinical vaccination trial.The permit is good from Sept. 16 to Oct. 31, 2022, with a rental rate of ,000 per month.A spokesperson for UCSD Health said the site would be for the Janssen clinical trial, which is still awaiting final approval locally; more details could not be confirmed Friday.The vaccination clinic would be set up in a parking lot at the park in National City, one of the communities heavily impacted by COVID-19.Community advocates have been working with UCSD to inform potential participants in the South Bay about vaccine trials.“The Chicano Federation has been working with a lot of our underserved communities, but also some of the hardest-hit communities by COVID-19, particularly the Latino communities,” said Roberto Alcantar, Chief Strategy Officer for the Chicano Federation. “One of the hot topics to come out of this is the issue with vaccinations.”Alcantar said concerns were raised over a different trial that was set to begin in the South Bay earlier this month; it was later put on hold. But UCSD quickly worked with the federation to ensure residents in the trial areas would get the information needed to make informed decisions if they wanted to participate.“We’re happy to see that UCSD is taking the lead in National City, and it’s not some other group because we know that they’re doing the best that they can to provide the right information,” he said. “If there are trials that are happening out there that are unethical or targeting people of color with incentives, we’ll call them out.”UCSD researchers previously said they hoped to focus on recruiting people for the trials from underserved communities with the highest rate of COVID-19.The San Diego Latino Health Coalition, which includes the Chicano Federation and several other nonprofit organizations, will continue community outreach efforts before the trial officially begins.“We’re very effective at getting the information out, and people are receptive to us because they trust us, they know us, we’ve been working with them for decades,” said Alcantar.There’s no word on when the trial will start, but soon there may be three clinical trials running simultaneously with two focused primarily on the South Bay. 2361
