SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Zoo Safari Park's youngest southern white rhino began integrating with the rest of the park's rhino herd Wednesday, meeting a rhino other than his mother for the first time since his birth 10 weeks ago.Edward and his mother, Victoria, have remained sequestered from the rest of the herd since his birth in July to allow the two to bond and ensure he builds weight and stamina. The calf's weight has nearly quadrupled since then and he has only entered the Safari Park's rhino enclosure with Victoria.Edward met Helene, an adult female southern white rhino, after she sparred with Victoria, who was very protective of her calf, according to the zoo's animal care staff. His birth represents a step toward the zoo's longer-term goal of recovering the northern white rhino, a distant relative of the southern white rhino. Only two northern white rhinos still exist on the planet and both are female.Zoo officials plan to use stem cells and preserved northern white rhino cells to birth a northern white rhino calf within 10-20 years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A first-of-its-kind residential tower opened in San Diego this week.The 300-unit Palisade UTC complex is located right on the Westfield UTC mall's property. It offers an expansive pool, bar area, community room, open-air gym, and a lounge on the 23rd floor, with views to the coast. "The goal was to have multiple spaces, again, that would be like staying at a four or five star resort," said Jerry Brand, executive director of developer Greystar. The building will be among the most expensive in San Diego County.Studios start at ,750 a month, while two-bedroom units start at ,300. The penthouse is advertised for ,000 per month. It also includes 30 affordable units. Analysts say luxury buildings like Palisade can play a role in easing all of the region's housing crunch. "A substantial portion of the people moving into, like, the new projects downtown are actually vacating the older projects and moving up, so the luxury projects that are going up are really helping the housing situation," said Alan Nevin, director of economic research at Xpera Group. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A .2 million judgment against the San Diego Rock ‘N’ Roll marathon over injuries suffered by an elite wheelchair athlete was recently upheld.Craig Blanchette was born without legs due to a birth defect, but that has not stopped him pursuing his passions. He is a wheelchair racing champion. At 20-years-old, he won a bronze in the 1988 Summer Olympics and over the years, set more than 20 world records. “Wheelchair racing just fit me,” Blanchette said. He eventually took a break to compete in hand cycling, but was preparing to return to wheelchair racing. Court documents said he did everything to prepare for the 2014 Rock ‘N’ Roll marathon, including studying the course map and virtual tour several times. Documents state Competitor Group, which operates the marathon, eliminated a lane on Eleventh Avenue an hour before the race—a move that changed Blanchette’s life. “I wasn’t racing recklessly. I was definitely going to make the corner,” Blanchette said. “When it’s too late to do anything about it, I realized the course had been narrowed by 13 feet. It was significant.” Blanchette was not aware of the change and crashed into a car. He was going more than 20 miles per hour at the time, according to court documents. “It’s the crash that ended my career,” Blanchette said.He filed a civil case against Competitor Group. A jury ruled in his favor and the Court of Appeal recently upheld a judgment of .2 million in his favor. “It’s the best they can offer because they can’t me my racing career back,” he added.It was bittersweet for Blanchette, who had to undergo surgery and several months of recovery. “The doctors basically told me that if I went back to racing and I injured it again, they wouldn’t be able put it back together like I did the first time,” he said.Blanchette now hand cycles, which uses different muscles, and spends time helping other athletes. He has been part of the National Wheelchair Sports Camp for years and this year, Blanchette’s attorney is also helping out. “This case was very eye-opening for me,” said attorney Russel Myrick. “With the proceeds from the case, we intend to make big improvements to the camp and we’re really looking forward to working with the kids.” They hope this ruling will help other athletes with disabilities. “They didn’t accommodate for us in the way that we deserved,” Blanchette said. “[You] want to treat us the same in value, but not the same in function.” Competitor Group did not return Team 10’s request for comment. 2529

SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- Unemployment numbers continue to decrease across San Diego County from a high of 25% in May, a report released Thursday from the San Diego Association of Governments found.The region's unemployment rate is estimated to be 15.9%, the SANDAG report found, 1.8% lower than the previous week and 9.1% lower than this time last month.According to the report, the number of unemployed people in the county began to drop when Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the state was moving into Stage 2 of his four-stage reopening roadmap on May 8. The report also credits local politicians for getting people back to work."Elected officials in the San Diego region have worked aggressively to help businesses reopen as quickly as possible, which contributed to approximately 150,000 workers returning to work in the past month," a summary of the report said. "However, there are still roughly 270,000 unemployed people in the region (down from 425,000 in early May)."San Diego County moved into Phase 3 of reopening in early June, which allowed in-store retail, restaurants, manufacturing facilities, hair salons and barbershops, bars, zoos, movie theaters and hotels to resume operations with appropriate social-distancing rules in place. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A computer virus prevented most of the San Diego Union-Tribune's readership from waking up with a paper Saturday morning.The U-T's Editor in Chief Jeff Light said in a statement online the virus affected the production of the U-T and the LA Times, and the Southern California editions of the Wall Street Journal, and New York Times through Los Angeles' Olympic Printing Plant. Light wrote that systems still used through the paper's former owner, Tribune Publishing, had been compromised by the virus Thursday night and spread to critical systems by Friday.The virus also affected the paper's digital replica online. The U-T said it plans to deliver the Saturday edition with Sunday's edition to print subscribers."I apologize to our customers for this inconvenience. Thank you for your patience and support.
