You’ve heard the presidential candidates fight it out. We’ll probably keep hearing from them for quite a while, no matter what the result is.But if you kept voting down your ballot, you probably voted for representatives to your state government. And this year, some people thought more than a handful of statehouses could flip from one party to another.Across the country, Democrats had the chance to flip 10 statehouses on election night, but six of the 10 remained under GOP control, while four are still counting results and remain too close to call.“There are still states that are counting so I don’t think we’re going to know the final numbers, but from what I’ve seen so far, it doesn’t seem like Democrats are kind of getting the statehouse wins that they were hoping for. My best guess at this point is Republicans will control the majority of statehouses once all the vote are counted,” said Sarah Chattfield, a political science professor at the University of Denver. She’s been watching the statehouse races.Statehouses have a ton of impact on state laws, budgets for important programs and schools, and they draw the lines for election districts every 10 years.“This year, we all just finished out the census and as a result of that, states are going to be redrawing their legislative districts. Some states do that with an independent commission, but the most common way is the state legislature redraws those districts,” said Chattfield.Every 10 years in the US, we redraw our legislative districts based on population. In many states, it becomes political.“If your party is in control of the state legislature, you can then draw districts to benefit your party,”So, the stakes were extra high this year. But in addition to redistricting, states control the state laws that impact the people in their states from speeding tickets to abortion to school funding to election laws, which we are seeing have a very real impact on the presidential race.“A huge amount of variation across the states in whether you’re in an all-mail state, or states where there’s very little absentee balloting and people have to show up. All of those are things that states are able to control,” said Chattfield. The impacts from the 2020 election across statehouses will shape the futures of many Americans for about a decade to come. 2335

Workers at a Chula Vista nonprofit are stunned and reeling after an arsonist burned down their office. Around midnight Saturday, an arsonist broke into the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment office on H Street, using lighter fluid to set it on fire. The nonprofit campaigned hard in favor two pro-rent control measures that failed in last week's election. Still, the arsonist apparently set the fire where the group's campaign signs stood. "This was a happy space, this was a safe space," said Paola Montes-Martinez, ACCE's San Diego director. "It's hate. That's what I smell in here."The Chula Vista police have opened an arson investigation. And they may have a clue.A worker at the 7-Eleven next to the office says the suspect stole two cans of lighter fluid, moments before the office went up in flames. Surveillance video has been turned over to police. Meanwhile, Montes-Martinez says the organization will not be intimidated. On Monday afternoon, officials from Chula Vista, National City and various San Diego nonprofits held a rally for ACCE. The group will work out of different nonprofit offices in the meantime, with a focus on fighting for tenant rights.  1217

Women make up roughly 10 percent of our nation’s veterans and face different challenges when reintegrating back into society after serving.“We’ve done a better job, I think, with men. Because we often associate military service with men. When we think about trauma and PTSD, and even combat, we think about men," says Akilah Templeton, president and CEO of Veterans Village of San Diego. The nonprofit serves thousands of veterans.“We get out into the real world and it’s a culture shock," said Erin Smalley, who joined the Navy when she was 24.Smalley says military life became more complicated when she had a baby as a single mom."It was definitely a challenge, being away from her, having to figure out who would watch her. Having strangers, chief’s wives watch her, that I didn’t know but a couple of weeks," said Smalley.Stationed with only three other women, Smalley felt alone as she navigated work and motherhood.“Having nobody to talk to, having nobody to confide in, nobody to feel what I felt, was definitely a challenge," she recalled. And while Smalley joined the Navy 20 years ago, it’s only been three months since she started working through the trauma that ultimately ended her military career."I had some sexual trauma in the military. I was raped in the military. After that, I had a substance abuse problem and failed a urine analysis and was discharged," she recounted.Smalley tried burying the trauma while serving and for many years after.“The only way I knew how to cope was to numb myself, and that’s where the substance abuse came in, just you know, it was completely numbing to me. It was easy not to think about it, not worry about it. But it cost me a lot," said Smalley.“We have to do a better job at offering services to women veterans in spaces where they feel comfortable and in spaces where they feel safe," stressed Templeton. When Smalley left the Navy, she didn’t know there were resources available. “Depression, mental health issues, but then you add to that the stressors that come with being a mom," said Templeton. "You're building a young person's self-esteem and trying to maintain your own. That's rough."The VA says female veterans are twice as likely to experience homelessness than civilian women. And 1 in 3 female veterans reports experiencing military sexual trauma.“I didn’t want to tell anyone. I was ashamed. I felt like I was not only letting myself down but letting the country down, by being discharged the way I was," said Smalley. After years of substance abuse, Smalley went to federal prison for attempting to smuggle people into the country. Then, she found Veterans Village, where she's now getting counseling and help for addiction. “I’m 58 days clean, sober. I’m on track to getting my daughter back. She’s living with my mom," said Smalley. After 20 years, Smalley is no longer facing her trauma alone, rebuilding her life one day at a time. 2910

— and the group expects that gas prices will continue to drop in the coming weeks.According to a press release, AAA projects that the national average for gas prices could fall to .75 a gallon at some point in April. It's the first time since 2016 that the average price or a gallon of gas dipped below .As of Tuesday, Oklahoma had the cheapest gas prices in the country, with an average of .55 a gallon. The only states where the average has price was above .75 a gallon are Hawaii (.36) and California (.05).The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated the demand for oil, as prices of crude oil have plummeted to a barrel — the lowest prices for oil since 2002. More people self-quarantining means fewer people using gasoline to travel, whether by car or plane. The economic downturn is also slowing the amount of cargo on the road and in the air."AAA expects gas prices to keep dropping as cheap crude combines with the realities of people staying home and less demand for gas," AAA spokesperson Jeanette Casselano said.Earlier this month, a gas station in Kentucky made national headlines when it sold gas for less than a gallon. The station quickly ran out of its supply of gasoline. 1201

You intended to harm him, but God intended it for good! To accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. You chose to think about yourself that day, what you were feeling and wanted to do to someone else. I’m sad you chose anger and hatred. Something really bad must have happened to you for you to want to do this to a sweet, innocent little boy. I’m sorry for whatever you’ve gone through. I hope God can save you and show you what His love is all about someday….want you to know I forgive you. Not because what you did was okay, not because I want to; but [because] God wants me to. I’m not letting you take any part of our family. You’re not taking our love, our joy, our peace; you’re not taking anything! I refuse to be full of anger and hatred, I refuse to let you take my joy. My sweet, precious baby, my amazing gift from God is going to be okay because Jesus loves him so much and he loves me so much. He answered my prayers and gave him back to me. You get to take nothing from us. You chose to listen to the Devil that day. I don’t get to judge you or hate you. Instead I am full of God’s love and I have overwhelming joy and peace in my body as I sit and watch my boy heal in miraculous ways right in from of my eyes. The whole world is seeing God move in this little boy that I get to call mine. The Devil tried to take him out, but GOD Saves. God ALWAYS wins! God will judge you someday and I have peace with that. I hand it off to him and you will take none of my thoughts EVER again, I am done with you. God, it is all in your hands. 1573
