Mysterious packages are popping up on Medicare recipients’ doorsteps and the Federal Trade Commission said it’s part of a rising scam."That’s a back brace,” Anna Miller, a 94-year-old Medicare recipient said as she rifled through a package delivered to her home.Inside the box was a back brace, shoulder brace, and a couple of other pieces of medical equipment, the items came bundled together in a box addressed to Miller."They must have thought I was in bad shape to send me both of them in one box,” Miller joked.She said she never ordered any kind of medical device."I thought it was terrible because I figured it was false,” Miller said.As it turns out, her Medicare account got charged for the back and shoulder brace. It’s a scam the FTC said is on the rise targeting Medicare dollars and personal information.Miller reached out to Medicare to see what was going on. "They just said they'd look into it and they questioned me,” she said.Medicare followed up, sending a letter confirming an investigation into the matter. Meanwhile, the FTC is warning Medicare recipients to be aware.If someone calls and says they're with Medicare and offers you a “free” or “low cost” brace, hang up right away.Medicare will never call you with such an offer. Never give your Medicare or other personal information over the phone to anyone.If you do need a brace or medical equipment, talk to your doctor. Sellers on the phone don’t know what you need.Lastly, don't accept medical equipment you get in the mail unless you or your doctor ordered it. Monday morning, the CDC removed what it calls was a “draft version of proposed changes” to their website that seemed to indicate they were embracing mounting evidence that COVID-19 is airborne and is transmitted through tiny droplets that can linger in the air and spread farther than six feet.“A draft version of proposed changes to these recommendations was posted in error to the agency’s official website. CDC is currently updating its recommendations regarding airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19). Once this process has been completed, the update language will be posted,” the CDC website now reads.The website was changed over the weekend, according to multiple media reports, to reflect several updates to their guidance about how COVID-19 spreads and preventative measures to take.The “draft” changes included stating COVID-19 transmits through the air and warned about poorly ventilated situations, saying that is “thought to be the main way the virus spreads.”On the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website about coronavirus, under how it spreads, they listed the main way as: “Through respiratory droplets or small particles, such as those in aerosols, produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, sings, talks, or breathes. These particles can be inhaled into the nose, mouth, airways, and lungs and cause infection.”They also had updated the guidance that particles can remain in the air longer and travel farther than originally thought.“There is growing evidence that droplets and airborne particles can remain suspended in the air and be breathed in by others, and travel distances beyond 6 feet (for example, during choir practice, in restaurants, or in fitness classes). In general, indoor environments without good ventilation increase this risk,” the CDC website read over the weekend.The website has been changed back to their previous guidance which states COVID-19 is believed to be transferred through larger droplets through close contact, closer than six feet, with a person who coughs, sings, or otherwise expels these larger droplets carrying the virus.The updated draft passages and comments on smaller particles and ventilation appeared to embrace recent studies from the CDC.Including one released by the CDC earlier this month showing Americans with positive COVID-19 test results were twice as likely to eat at a restaurant or cafe than those who tested negative.“Reports of exposures in restaurants have been linked to air circulation. Direction, ventilation, and intensity of airflow might affect virus transmission, even if social distancing measures and mask use are implemented according to current guidance. Masks cannot be effectively worn while eating and drinking, whereas shopping and numerous other indoor activities do not preclude mask use,” that report stated.In the “draft” changes to the CDC website, they included a preventative measure about ventilation, stating “Airborne viruses, including COVID-19, are among the most contagious and easily spread.” That passage is no longer on the website.The draft changes on the air transmission of COVID-19 also came on the heels of the CDC’s director, Dr. Robert Redfield, saying masks could be even more helpful in combating the coronavirus than a vaccine. President Donald Trump said later Redfield was confused by the question and misspoke.The World Health Organization changed their guidance and noted the prevalence of air transmission, and those particles lingering in the air, earlier this summer in July. MURRIETA, Calif. (KGTV) -- One second she was getting the all-clear to go into the home, and the next the walls crumbled around her. A mother trapped inside when a Murrieta home when it exploded says there’s only one reason she made it out alive. "I just saw everything crashing down around me, and I thought I was dead, I thought that was it,” said Alexis Haaland, who was inside home when it blew up. Looking at the house Tuesday, Haaland says she’s still in shock she walked away from the explosion with only a few scratches. "I just stood still and I covered my head and I was screaming oh my god, just hoping nothing hit me."Haaland was having solar panels installed at the home she lived in with her family for about a month. She says the solar company told her they hit a gas line and that she should probably leave. She took her two kids and put them outside with her mother and little brother in their van. Haaland says a firefighter told her she could go back in and get her wallet and diaper bag. That’s when the home exploded. "I just knew I had to get out, and I ran to my mom and my kids and my mom just looked at me and was like how did you get out of there."Haaland says she got out through a window that was shattered in the blast. She says she was standing by a wall, the only one left standing after the home exploded. "I'm really shook up still, having a couple panic attacks and stuff, but I'm alive, and that's all that really matters."Haaland says she’s thankful that her kids were outside the home. She says the moments after the explosion were tough, adding that her thoughts are with the man killed in the explosion and those who were injured. "There wasn't much sleep last night. Pretty much any loud noise woke me up."The family says the community has stepped up and offered to help them after they lost everything in the blast. 1865
