BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Top political advisor Jia Qinglin called for closer financial ties between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan while meeting with Fredrick Chien, the head of a Taiwan finance delegation here on Thursday.Jia, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People' s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said that financial cooperation was crucial for the cross-Straits economic bond. BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's vegetable prices declined at a faster rate last week as weather remained good and local governments stepped up efforts to ensure supplies.According to a report by the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) on Tuesday, the prices of 18 types of vegetables for the week ending November 21 declined 2.6 percent from the previous week, and the pace of the fall accelerated from the previous week's 0.8 percent.The ministry said that radishes, cucumbers and celery were among the vegetables that witnessed the largest fall in prices, dropping 11.1 percent, 10 percent and 7 percent respectively week-on-week.This was good news for the Chinese government as it strove to ease inflation and keep rising prices in check.China's consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of the country's inflation, surged to a 25-month high of 4.4 percent in October. Food prices, which account for one-third of the basket of goods used to calculate the CPI, soared 10.1 percent last month.However, according to the MOC report, China's meat and cooking oil prices during the period of November 15-21 edged up because of rising demand. Prices of pork and beef rose 2.2 percent and 0.7 percent respectively, week-on-week.

THE HAGUE, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- As the 2012 deadline for the complete destruction of chemical weapons approaches, China Monday called for parties to demonstrate their political will and speed up the destruction process.During the 15th session of the Conference of the States Parties of OPCW, Ambassador Zhang Jun, Permanent Representative of China to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said the Chemical Weapons Convention has been playing "an important role" in removing the threat of chemical weapons.Zhang said: "The timely completion of destruction activities constitutes a core obligation under the Convention. The destruction of chemical weapons is the most important, pressing and overriding task for the OPCW at present and in the years to come."

BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday again called on the relevant parties to make joint efforts to safeguard peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula.Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei made the remarks at a regular press briefing.The Republic of Korea (ROK) and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) exchanged artillery fire Tuesday in waters off the west coast of the Korean Peninsula, leaving four people dead.Hong initially expressed China's stance Wednesday with regard to the exchange of fire between the ROK and the DPRK.On Thursday, Hong again called on parties involved to stay calm and exercise restraint, and urged the ROK and DPRK to engage in dialogue and refrain from similar actions.China has always maintained that the relevant parties resolve disputes through negotiations and by peaceful means and be committed to safeguarding peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula, Hong said.China opposed any acts that harmed the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula, he went on."It is very urgent and important to restart the six-party talks at the current stage," Hong said, adding China had maintained close contact with all the parties involved, including the United States.He said China hoped parties involved could make concerted efforts to properly handle their concerns through talks and consultation within the framework of the six-party talks, which involved China, the DPRK, the United States, the ROK, Russia and Japan.China would like to make concerted efforts with all parties to help ease tension, seek peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula, Hong said.With respect to the planned joint military drill between the United States and the ROK in waters off the west coast of the Korean Peninsula from Nov.28 to Dec. 1, Hong said China was concerned."China holds a consistent and clear stance on the issue," Hong said without elaborating.
