A second Florida city paid thousands of dollars to ransomware attackers who hacked their computer systems -- the latest in a growing trend that forces local governments offline.Officials from Lake City agreed Tuesday to pay 42 bitcoin, roughly 6,000, to hackers who seized the city's computer systems June 10, ending a 15-day standoff.It's the second city in Florida to fall prey to ransomware attackers this summer: On June 19, Riviera Beach officials voted to pay their requested ransom of 65 bitcoin, close to 0,000, to hackers who disabled the city's online services in late May.Lake City police said the city paid a ,000 deductible to its insurance company, which will cover the rest of the ransom.In a statement, the city called the attack a "triple threat," a ransomware program that attacked the city's network three different ways and took out email systems, landline phones and online credit card payment.Cyber attacks on government are growingRansomware attacks have spiked since 2016, hijacking the computer systems of government entities like cities, police departments and schools. A South Carolina fifth-grader who was injured when a fight broke out in her classroom died Wednesday, school officials said.The student, Raniya Wright, died two days after the fight at Forest Hills Elementary School in Walterboro, Colleton County School District officials said."Weapons were not involved in this incident," the Colleton County Sheriff's Office said Thursday in a statement.The fight was between two fifth-grade students, the sheriff's office said. Airlines in multiple countries have suspended the use of Boeing's new 737 MAX 8 aircraft over concerns about its safety, after an Ethiopian Airlines flight of the same model crashed Sunday killing all 157 on board.Flight ET302 to Nairobi had just taken off from the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa Sunday when it reported technical problems and asked for permission to turn back. It crashed shortly afterwards.As the crash investigation got underway, the Civil Aviation Administration of China ordered Monday that all domestic Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets be out of the air by 6 p.m. local time, due to its principle of "zero tolerance for safety hazards."China has one of the world's largest fleets of Boeing 737 MAX 8, operating 97 of the planes, according to Chinese state-run media.The move was followed by an announcement from Ethiopian Airlines that the carrier had grounded its fleet of Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets as an "extra safety precaution." Cayman Airways also said on Monday it was grounding both of its "new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft ... until more information is received."Sunday marked the second time in less than six months that a new Boeing aircraft crashed just minutes into a flight. A shooting at a bowling alley late Friday left three men dead and four people wounded in Southern California, and police are trying to find whoever fired the shots, authorities said.The gunshots at the Gable House Bowl in Torrance went off just before midnight. A fight -- first involving young ladies, then men -- happened shortly beforehand, sending people running, a witness said."Then ... maybe a minute and a half later, all of the sudden all we heard was, pop, pop, pop," the witness, Dana Scott, told RMG News. "Bowlers were diving under the benches. The people that were still bowling on the lanes were on the floors, underneath the seats.""People were looking for their parents, because this is a family league. A student says when she would tell her parents how school staff spoke to her, they didn’t believe her. So she grabbed her phone and recorded it. When her family saw it they said it is time for adults to be held accountable. In the video she recorded you can hear the principal of the Riverside Academy West Charter School in Dearborn, Michigan, and students. The principal says he was called by a teacher to help with disruptive students. Because she is a minor we are withholding her identity, but the student recording admits she interrupted class by talking with a friend. She says the principal then overreacted. He can be held yelling at the students to shut up and to go to another school if they don’t like it. He calls one student a big mouth. “I was scared. One girl was crying, because he has two faces, one for the parents and for us,” said the student. “I cannot imagine watching a teacher treat my children this way,” said Kaytlyn Dell, who is the student’s older sister. She is speaking for her parents because they do not speak English. “Kids are screaming. Teachers are screaming. There is no structure,” said Dell. “Anything short of treating children with dignity and respect, parents, colleagues, administrators, is unacceptable. So anytime that is compromised we take that very seriously and address the matter swiftly,” said Michael Conran, Superintendent of Global Education Excellence Schools, which runs several charter schools.
