BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday called for the country's law-enforcement personnel to learn the selfless dedication to the people from Tan Dong, a policeman in Sichuan Province.     Tan, 45, was a traffic policeman in Dayi County of Chengdu, capital city of Sichuan. He died of myocarditis on Jan. 5 because of long-time hard work at his position.     On Dec. 29 last year, in order to save a person having fallen into a trench in a car accident, Tan jumped into the cold water and got a serious cold. Being seriously sick afterwards, Tan insisted on working, until the last minute of his life.     After his death, Tan was honored as a first-class model by the Ministry of Public Security and Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.     On Friday, some of Tan's relatives and colleagues were invited to give a report on his heroic deeds in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The audience were deeply moved by the report and gave applauses to show their respect for the hero.     More than 800 police and citizen representatives listened to the report.     Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met with Tan's families and colleagues before the report.     "He is an ordinary, but great person. He is the model for the police, and also a good example for China's grassroots officials," Zhou said.     In Tan Dong's diary, he wrote: one cannot be a public servant if he has no intention of dedication.     "He did what he said," Zhou said.

BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin held in-depth exchanges of views over the phone on Thursday on bilateral relations and issues of common concern.     Wen said the ongoing unprecedented financial crisis has inflicted a severe impact on the world's economic and political structure, and brought difficulties to the development of China and Russia.     As strategic partners for cooperation, China and Russia should enhance coordination and cooperation, which has important significance not only for the two countries but the world at large, Wen said.     He said China and Russia enjoy firm mutual trust and have huge potential for cooperation in such fields as the economy, trade, energy, science, and technology. BEIJING, April 6 (Xinhua) -- China would manage to make breakthrough in yuan-based cross-border payment system in 2009, People's Bank of China, or the central bank, said in an on-line report.     According to the report reviewing the country's payment system in 2008, China would further develop regional and international cooperation in payments, and improve the yuan-based cross-border trade settlements this year.     The report also pointed out that China's payment system had remained safe, stable and efficient last year despite severe natural disasters and global financial downturn, as a total of 1,131 trillion yuan (about 166 trillion U.S. dollars) had been spent through the payment system, 37.62 times of the GDP last year.     The central bank's high-value payment system (HVPS), core infrastructure of the country's payment system, had conducted 214 million payments worth 64 trillion yuan last year, up 24.42.     China's securities settlement system had remained steady and provided strong support to the securities business, said the report. Trading volume in China's interbank bond market reached 10.46 billion yuan, up 66.03 percent from that of 2007, it said.     According to the report, non-cash payment products, such as bank cards and bill payment, had become more popular among Chinese citizens.     Chinese people had conducted 13.8 payments through non-cash products per capita last year, up 18.1 percent from that of 2007. Up to 24.2 percent of China's retail sales last year had been spent through the bank card system, 2.3 percentage points higher than the 2007 level, it said.

BEIJING, March 16 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Railways (MOR) signed a deal with state-owned vehicle producer CNR Corporation Limited (CNR) here Monday to purchase 100 high-speed CRH trains for 39.2 billion yuan (about 5.74 billion U.S. dollars).     CRH, an abbreviation for China Railway High-speed, refers to trains with speeds above 200 km per hour. With a designed speed of 350km/h, the new CRH trains will travel between Beijing and Shanghai in 2011, when the construction of the 1318-km, high-speed railway between the capital city and the country's financial hub is expected to complete.     "The contract does not include any foreign parties, as Chinese companies possess core technologies for the high-speed trains and have complete intellectual rights over the 350km/h CRH type," said Zhang Shuguang, director of the transport department under the MOR.     The MOR had introduced railway technologies from Japan, France, Germany and Canada in the development and production of the 200km/h CRH trains already in operation at present.     According to the agreement between the ministry and CNR, all 100 trains will be self-developed and manufactured under the CNR group. Tangshan Railway Vehicle Co. and Changchun Railway Vehicle Co., two CNR subsidiaries, will be in charge of the production of 60 sets and 40 sets, respectively.     Zhang said China would see "large purchases" of CRH trains in the coming years upon the completion of more passenger railway lines across the country.     The MOR has planned to spend 500 billion yuan to buy trains over the next four years.     "The purchases will provide strong support for related industries," Zhang said.     The manufacturing of a CRH train requires nearly 100,000 parts from a wide range of industries such as mechanics, metallurgy, electrics, chemical, and materials.     "We will buy more CRH trains this year as a move to help stimulate domestic demand," said Zhang without giving further details on the purchasing plan.

LONDON, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met with French President Nicolas Sarkozy here Wednesday night.     "Our meeting today means a new starting point for the bilateral relations, and I hope the two sides work together to usher in a new phase in Chinese-French ties," Hu said at the start of his meeting with Sarkozy.
