YINCHUAN, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Millions of Chinese Muslims across the country celebrated the tradition of Corban on Tuesday and Wednesday.In northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, 76-year-old Liu Wenming attended a religious ceremony at the Nanguan Mosque in the regional capital, Yinchuan, Wednesday morning, along with some 10,000 Muslims."My son, daughter and grandchildren will come from different parts of Ningxia to have a family lunch with me. Then we will visit other relatives and friends," said Liu.In Qinghai Province, also in the northwest, many Muslims began to gather at the Dongguan Mosque in the provincial capital Xining before 8 a.m. Tuesday. By 9 a.m., roads outside the mosque were packed with pious Muslims. Muslims attend a celebration feast held in a street in Nanning, capital of southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, to mark Corban Festival, also known as Eid al-adha, Nov. 17, 2010. The timing depends on each ethic group's tradition.The Corban Festival, also known as Id al-Gurban, is a major Islamic festival that is meant to demonstrate believers' faith and obedience to Allah. People slaughter livestock and divide the animal into three parts.One part is to be eaten by the family. Another part is for relatives and friends. The third part is for charity.Migrant workers from northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region returned home this month in time for the festival.Eighty-seven migrant workers from Shule County returned home in early November to join their families in celebrating the joyous occasion.Additionally, the regional government organized a reception on Tuesday afternoon, during which Zhang Chunxian, secretary of the regional committee of the Communist Party of China, met representatives from all walks of life.At the end of his speech, Zhang greeted the Muslims while speaking in the Uygur language, which received warm applause.China has more than 20 million Muslims. HANGZHOU, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Fire engulfed an electric appliance store in east China's Zhejiang Province Friday night, local police said.Flames broke out at around 8:30 p.m. at a store of GOME, China's leading electric appliance franchiser, in downtown Jinhua City, Zhejiang, according to the police.The store occupies the first three floors of a 13-storey residential building. The store was in business when the fire broke out."The fire has engulfed six floors of the building so far. At least 10 people from the upper residential apartments have been transferred to safer places by firefighters as of 9:50 p.m.," said a witness.The witness said there were people trapped on the 12th floor of the building, but the exact number of the trapped remained unknown.Ambulances are waiting on the road. So far, no casualties were reported.Fire fighters continue rescuing people from the upper floors by stairs.

HANGZHOU, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Rescue efforts are continuing to save a worker trapped 18 meters under sea surface for almost 18 hours in Jiaxing Harbor, east China's Zhejiang Province, local authorities said.The worker, 43, surnamed Fan from central China's Hubei Province, was stuck at the bottom of a steel shielding canister in which he was working at 9 a.m. Thursday. The shielding canister deformed under sudden increase of hydraulic pressure from flood tide, according to local media report.The shielding canister, a part of an offshore platform, is one meter in diameter. Fan was working at the bottom of the canister that joins a cement column when the incident happened.Rescue staff said, "We are making slow progress because of complex geological conditions. The deformed section, about two to four meters under the sea surface, has been squeezed to only 3cm wide at the narrowest part."Thankfully, the shielding canister has not fractured, though seriously deformed.Rescue workers have decided to cut the cement column off the seabed to lift the shielding canister.Rescue efforts started at 10 a.m. Thursday. Food, including ham sausages and drinking water were supplied to the worker, through a flexible pipe. Fan asked for some cigarettes.Fan's family members have arrived at the site, praying for him at the bank.

YOKOHAMA, Japan, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao put forward a five-point proposal on Saturday to promote sound and fast economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region.Hu made the proposal at the 18th Economic Leaders' Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, which opened here Saturday afternoon.Firstly, Hu asked the APEC economies to "promote balanced growth to create conditions for long-term economic development," saying they should seek balanced growth both within a member economy and among all member economies."We should increase input to help developing members achieve their full potential and narrow the North-South gap," Hu said.He called on APEC members to move toward a more rational division of labor, a more balanced financial and trade structure, more efficient allocation of resources and more equitable sharing of benefits.Efforts by APEC members in this aspect "will contribute to balanced and coordinated global economic growth," he said.Secondly, President Hu said the APEC members should "advocate inclusive growth to boost the internal dynamism of economic development."He called on all members to focus on economic development, uphold social equity and justice and adhere to the people-first principle so that all countries, regions and groups could benefit from economic globalization and development.
