VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Juneteenth holiday is far from new. It’s been celebrated by African Americans in the country for years.“I actually didn’t learn about that until I was an adult, just in general conversation speaking with other people,” said Erica Parham.Parham is a product of the Hampton school division in Virginia Beach area.“I wasn’t taught that in school at all,” she adds. She wants to see change. Her boys, Jaxon and Sebastian, go to Kempsville Elementary School in Virginia Beach.“They knew about Fourth of July in day care,” but they were never taught about the day in 1865 when African American slaves found out they were free."I do believe that large parts of the Virginia Department of Education curriculum are inadequate to really tell the story of slavery and racism in Virginia,” said Brian Teucke.Teucke is an 8th grade civics teacher at Page Middle School and also the president of the Gloucester Education Association."There are huge gaps in our curriculum that need to be addressed, and [they] can be by enhancing the curriculum,” he adds. The Department of Education says new history textbooks and curriculum must correspond with the standards of learning, and revising the SOLs takes about two years, meaning it will take some time before Juneteenth makes it inside textbooks. The department encourages teachers to use online resources in the classroom. Teucke says he’s already doing that and is challenging other teachers to do the same."Educators are going to play a unique role in making sure that we are doing a better job at fighting racism through education,” he adds.He says history teachers are not the only ones who play a role.“It can be incorporated into all subjects, including English language arts.”For parents who want to get a head start on teaching their kids about Juneteenth, the local library is a good resource. They have books for children about the holiday to help children learn more about their history.A spokesperson with the department of education also says, "Publishers are invited to submit textbooks for review by the department and recommendation to the state board for adoption based on alignment to the revised standards and curriculum framework."For more information on Virginia's textbook review process, click here. This story was originally pulbished by Nana-Séntuo Bonsu at WTKR. 2352

VISTA (CNS and KGTV) - A man accused of killing his 7-year-old daughter at the family's Oceanside home pleaded not guilty Tuesday to murder, assault and child cruelty charges.Pedro Araujo, 27, is charged in last Wednesday's slaying of Mariah Araujo. Police have not commented on the cause of her death, but the criminal complaint indicates that a knife was used.Mariah was stabbed at least 10 times in the neck and upper body, prosecutors said. She also had defensive wounds from the attack. In addition to murder, the defendant is charged with assault on a child in regard to Mariah, and misdemeanor child cruelty involving her 6-year- old sister.RELATED: 7-year-old found dead in Oceanside home, father arrestedHe faces 26 years to life in prison if convicted of all charges. The children's grandmother made an emergency call shortly after 11 a.m. to report that she had just gone to the family's house in the 3500 block of Las Vegas Drive to pick up Mariah and her sister but had been unable to find the older girl, Oceanside police spokesman Tom Bussey said. The woman reported that her son -- the girls' father -- had been evasive about the whereabouts of his elder daughter and had blood on him, Bussey said.Officers went to the residence near Emerald Isle Golf Course and searched it, finding the victim's body in a bathroom. Detectives questioned Araujo and took him into custody on suspicion of murdering his daughter, Bussey said.Araujo's arraignment was initially scheduled for last Friday, but was postponed twice because he was being held in ``enhanced observation housing,'' according to court staff.Members of the girl's family gathered at the Vista courthouse last Friday and told reporters that Araujo was unstable and should not have been anywhere near his daughters.Karina Avina, Mariah's aunt, said Araujo did not have custody of the children as numerous Child Protective Services cases were open and ongoing against him, though the circumstances of those cases was unclear.``We want him to pay the max. That's what we want,'' Avina said. ``We don't want a few years. We don't want him to get out. He needs to pay his whole life.''Araujo is being held without bail. He's next due at the Vista courthouse on Aug. 14 for a readiness conference. 2267

WASHINGTON (AP) — A second Republican senator has come out in opposition to filling a vacant Supreme Court seat before the Nov. 3 election. And Speaker Nancy Pelosi is asserting without details that the Democratic-led House has “options” for stalling or preventing President Donald Trump from quickly installing a successor to the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska says that “for weeks, I have stated that I would not support taking up” a potential nomination as the presidential election neared. “Sadly, what was then a hypothetical is now our reality, but my position has not changed.” 629

WASHINGTON (AP) — Joe Biden says he has begun receiving intelligence briefings and warns that Russia, China and other adversaries are attempting to undermine the upcoming U.S. election in November. The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee wasn’t specific and offered no evidence while addressing a virtual fundraiser Friday. However, in the process, he confirmed receiving classified briefings after suggesting as recently as late last month that he wasn’t getting them.Biden received intelligence briefings while vice president but told reporters he wasn’t getting them as of June 30.Classified briefings are traditionally provided to major-party nominees once they win the primary, but Biden won’t formally become the nominee until the party’s convention next month. 781

Walmart recently introduced an app that is geared for employees to help consumers find products. The voice assistant app "Ask Sam" allows Sam's Club, which first developed it, and Walmart employees to look up prices, store maps, locate products, and emergency alerts, the company announced in a press release."While all associates go through emergency training, we wanted to provide managers with an additional way to quickly and effectively alert associates to emergency situations," said Walmart's Executive Vice President and Chief Product Officer Meng Chee in the statement. "We created an emergency feature in Ask Sam – the Emergency Alert Button – empowering managers to make quick decisions during high-stress situations. With the push of a button, clear and instructive emergency alerts are sent to all associates on and off the clock through multiple associate applications."The app has also made it possible for employees to learn news about COVID-19, Chee said."In addition to guidance from their managers, having access to the answers and information they need at their fingertips gives associates confidence as well as more time on the floor with customers," said Chee. 1189
