POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) - A North County gun store, Poway Weapons and Gear Range, is part of a group suing the state of California over a law which took effect earlier this year.The law makes it illegal to sell rifles and shotguns to anyone younger than 21. There are exceptions for military, law enforcement, and people with hunting licenses. It was already illegal for those under 21 to buy handguns.Store Director of Sales Danielle Rudolph tells 10News the lawsuit is about sticking up for their customers."The constitution protects anybody that’s an adult in the United States. An adult is 18,” she says.The state legislator who wrote the law says he was inspired to act by the shooting in Parkland, Florida, in which a man is accused of killing 17 students and staff members at a school while using an assault rifle. A similar weapon was used by the gunman in the shooting at the Chabad of Poway synagogue, which killed one person and injured three others.Supporters of the law say it's a common sense regulation to help keep guns out of the hands of those who should not have them.Rudolph says California already has the strictest gun laws in the country and that more aren't needed. She also says the law prevents her store from offering the gun safety and training programs for teens and children that are an important factor in creating a culture of responsible gun ownerships. That's why they feel it is important to sign on to the lawsuit filed Monday.“We’re proud to be a part of it. Anything to protect our second amendment rights.” 1550

President Donald Trump once again promoted hydroxychloroquine as a COVID-19 treatment despite a number of trials disputing its efficacy.Questions on Trump’s support of the largely unproven drug comes as Trump retweeted a video that called the drug a “cure” for the coronavirus. Twitter, Facebook and YouTube have since pulled the video from their platforms.The video also caused Twitter to suspend the account of Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr.Major public health organizations have disputed the efficacy of the drug. Early results of the drug’s usage in peer reviewed trials have not been promising, according to the FDA. The FDA has banned the use of the drug to treat coronavirus outside of hospital and clinical trial settings. But Trump continues to place hopes in hydroxychloroquine.“I happen to believe in it. I would take it,” Trump said on Tuesday. “As you know, I took it for a 14-day period, and I'm here. Right? I'm here. I happen to think it's -- it works in the early stages.”Recently, the White House began promoting a study by the Henry Ford Health System, which did indicate that the drug reduced mortality. But a number of other studies have not been able to replicate Henry Ford Health System's findings. Most recently, the New England Journal of Medicine published last week a study that indicated that the drug did not improve coronavirus outcomes. But the FDA has said that the drug carries dangerous side effects, and several initial studies indicated that the drug is not an effective treatment for COVID-19. In June, the FDA withdrew an emergency use authorization of the drug. An EUA allowed doctors to use treatments by weighing potential benefits over potential risks.“We made this determination based on recent results from a large, randomized clinical trial in hospitalized patients that found these medicines showed no benefit for decreasing the likelihood of death or speeding recovery,” the FDA said. “This outcome was consistent with other new data, including those showing the suggested dosing for these medicines are unlikely to kill or inhibit the virus that causes COVID-19.”In April, the FDA first put out guidance that warned against the use of hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine for COVID-19 outside of the hospital setting or a clinical trial due to possible side effects. The FDA added that hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine had not been shown to be safe and effective for treating or preventing COVID-19.The FDA said that hydroxychloroquine can cause abnormal heart rhythms, and patients who also have other health issues such as heart and kidney disease are likely to be at increased risk of complications.Hydroxychloroquine, a treatment that is commonly used to treat malaria and lupus, can be provided as a treatment for COVID-19 patients on an experimental basis. 2820

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Laura has knocked utilities out as it batters Hispaniola, following a track forecast to take it to the same part of the U.S. coast later in the week, also as a hurricane. It would be the first time two hurricanes appear in the Gulf of Mexico simultaneously, according to records dating to at least 1900.On Saturday, the storms dumped rain on Puerto Rico and Hispaniola, while the other swept into the gulf through the gap between Cuba and Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.A hurricane watch has been issued for the New Orleans metro area, which Hurricane Katrina pummeled in August 2005. 773

(KGTV) -- A local business and organization are coming together to take steps toward better protecting Alzheimer patients by providing free gun locks.Alzheimer’s San Diego and Poway Weapons and Gear have started the first of its kind program regarding what to do when it’s time to lock up your guns.Eugenia Welch is the President of Alzheimer’s San Diego and spoke to 10News. "As we were working further through this program, there was an incident locally, a gentleman shot his daughter because he didn’t recognize her as a daughter he thought she was an intruder. Luckily she’s fine but that could have been a really bad situation," she said. When families are helping their loved ones who have been diagnosed, they often forget about the guns in the home and how dangerous they could be. "If someone is retired military or retired police officer, they’ve probably had guns in their home their whole life and didn’t even think about it” Welch says.This program gives free gun locks to families. It started over the summer and so far they have given out 100 locks.Poway Weapons and Gear has donated 500 locks and tells 10News they will continue to donate as need grows.The program hits close to home for the business because the owner’s grandmother was also diagnosed with the disease.With the locks on guns they become completely unusable, preventing the cylinder from going back in with the rounds to allow the gun to be fired.While the ideal situation is for the guns to be completely removed, the organization says this is the next best option. 1610

President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden will have their microphones cut off in Thursday’s debate while their rival delivers their opening two-minute answer to each of the debate topics.The 90-minute debate is divided into six 15-minute segments, with each candidate granted two minutes to deliver uninterrupted remarks before proceeding to an open debate. The open discussion portion of the debate will not feature a mute button, but interruptions by either candidate will count toward their time in the second and final debate Thursday.The nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates announced the rule changes Monday, three weeks after a chaotic opening faceoff between the two presidential contenders that featured frequent interruptions — most by Trump.The commission has faced pressure from the Trump campaign to avoid changing the rules, while Biden’s team was hoping for a more ordered debate. In a statement, the commission said it “had determined that it is appropriate to adopt measures intended to promote adherence to agreed-upon rules and inappropriate to make changes to those rules.” 1115
