SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A new website from the City of San Diego's Planning Department is asking residents to help re-imagine the Clairemont neighborhood.Clairemontplan.org is like an online public meeting, where people can look at different ideas for adding housing and retail to the neighborhood and weigh in on which ones they like the most."We understand not everyone can make an in-person meeting at the time we schedule it for or attend a city council hearing in the middle of the day," says City Planning Director Mike Hansen.As MTS builds a new trolley line through Clairemont along the I-5, the area is coming up with a new community plan. The city wants to add housing and retail to the area to help meet new goals for housing, transportation and climate change.To do that, they're looking to add density to the neighborhood.The website identifies eight areas of Clairemont that could be redeveloped. It asks users to make changes to at least three areas while adding 5,000 new homes. At least 40% of the houses need to be near the trolley.To help, it offers basic renderings of what different development could look like in each neighborhood."We wanted to try to find something that allowed people to get into the weeds if they wanted to," says Tait Galloway, the Program Manager who helped design the website. "But, this still allows them to do it within 15-20 minutes."The website will be available until March 14th. After that, the answers will be collected and used as the city devises the new Clairemont Community Plan. They hope to present it by the end of 2020.City leaders hope this will become a template for other neighborhoods and a way to get more people involved in the process. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --Three hours after returning from his deployment, Navy Lt. Eric Turner went to Seaworld. Not for the same reason as most visitors though - he was there to surprise his wife. Beckie Turner is a trainer. Hundreds of people pack in to see the "Dolphin Days" show at the park. Beckie does it every day, but Wednesday, September 13 there was something different going on backstage. "She's not expecting me, she thinks I'm on medical hold or something like that," her husband told 10News Reporter Bree Steffen.  "I hope she's not mad haha." Lt. Turner is back early from his 11-month deployment in the Middle East. The couple was reunited after he walked down the arena stairs, people cheering as Beckie got out of the water and embraced her husband. "It's nice to have him home," she said, tearing up. "Thank you all for being a part of it, it's really special." Eric and Beckie have four kids, have been married 10 years, and both of their parents served in the Navy.  1035

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- On most days at the North Side Shack in Point Loma, you'll find Pamela Olivera. She opened the now-thriving shop four years ago."If you're really motivated, if you really enjoy something, wanna do something, you only live once," said Olivera of the gamble that paid off.While she always had a passion for cooking, it wasn't always how she made a living. Olivera was once a paralegal. She thought was a good job for a single mother of three, but it wasn't a job she loved. So, she decided to change that.  She went to the San Diego Workforce Partnership location in Chula Vista, where she found a program that would give her money to retrain for a new career. In her case, it was culinary school. "For me, they offered me a ,000 grant, the program was ,000. That's a third of the cost of the school," said Olivera.The partnership provides a long list of resources for job seekers depending on their needs. The service is free. It's a valuable tool Olivera says more people should utilize.Other resources available include career counseling, job searches, typing certificates and Microsoft Word classes. San Diego (KGTV)- Parents at several San Diego County high schools have been notified that students could have been exposed to Pertussis, also known as whooping cough. Carlsbad High School confirmed two cases last week. Monday, parents at Mt. Carmel High School were notified that students at that school may have been exposed to the infection, though it wasn't clear how many confirmed cases there have been at the school. “This is probably the most contagious bacterial disease,” says Eric McDonald, with the county’s Health and Human Services Department. “For every one person who has it, when they expose people who have not had or been immunized, they can infect up to 16 or 17 other people.”McDonald says symptoms of a typical cold are a runny nose, low-grade fever, and a cough. For someone who may have pertussis “its the persistence of the cough that should be the number one clue.”So far this year, in San Diego County, there have been over 70 confirmed cases of pertussis. “The number of cases in San Diego are higher than most of California, particularly for infants under the age of four months.”If your child has a cough that lasts almost two weeks, they should be treated by a doctor. McDonald recommends everyone get the DTaP shot to lower the risk of getting pertussis, especially pregnant women in their third trimester. 1347

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The 2019-2020 cruise season is officially underway in San Diego, and the Port of San Diego expects thousands of visitors to the region, having a significant economic impact on the city.The Port has 104 cruise calls scheduled, which is up from last year's numbers. Approximately 338,000 passengers will be on the cruises and Port officials say each home ported call has an average of million in economic impact."That doesn't just mean spending money on food and shopping, but that can be maintenance, repairs and things to the ship," said Adam Deaton, with the Port's cruise business development."It's a great, great uptick for San Diego's economy," said Deaton. "We're not in the summer so it's kind of the down season, so cruise is a great pick me up for the winter and fall months."The season began Tuesday with the arrival of luxury ship Le Soleal, from French Cruise company, Ponant.Also this season, Holland America, Disney Cruise, and Carnival Cruise Lines will be featured. Carnival has not been in San Diego since 2011 and its return was much anticipated.The Carnival Miracle will be at the Port starting in December for 12 trips including Mexican Riviera, Hawaiian Island, Baja Mexico and Panama Canal cruises.Starting October 4, Disney Cruise Line will offer 16 cruises from the Port of San Diego.
