They're called the religious nones--a diverse group made up of atheists, agnostics, the spiritual, and those with no specific organized religion in particular. The Pew Research Center found just 27 percent of millennials say they attend religious services on a weekly basis, compared to 38 percent of baby boomers. And only about half of millennials--adults born between 1981 and 1996--say they believe in God with absolute certainty, and only about 1 in 10 millennials say religion is very important in their lives."Millennials, as I said, are relatively progressive people, and the Catholic Church is a formal patriarchy. It's an organization in which women are formally barred from being in positions of power," said Filipovic. The Pew Research Center says religious nones are growing faster among Democrats than Republicans, though their ranks are swelling in both partisan coalitions.But while less religious, millennials are still likely to engage in spiritual practices."It doesn't surprise me to see spirituality on the rise; it's such a key part of the human condition to want to understand why am I here, what is my purpose."The trends are not going unnoticed by religious institutions like the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego, which created the Young Adult Ministry to connect young adults to the Catholic Church."That's where we start to cultivate relationships and just bring us all the baggage, bring us all the stuff that you have questions about, and let's just talk about it," said Patrick Rivera, director of Young Adult Ministries.Rivera says before the pandemic, they would hold social events that don't necessarily feel religious."We have Theology on Tap, where we'll go to a bar or a parish hall, we'll bring in our own kegs and speakers and live musicians and have a theological discussion," said Rivera.He says the effort has been a sort of rebranding of the church. "One of the hardest parts for me in the last few years has been the rise of different scandals and things that have come up," said Rivera.Through conversation and social events, he says they're working to connect with marginalized groups like the LGBTQ community, who've historically felt ostracized from the church."That's the issue we want to try and resolve. It doesn't necessarily matter how you enter into faith or community, the community is still there longing to accept you as you are," said Rivera. "Definitely LGBT community is an area that we seek to try to mend some of the damages we've seen done across the previous generation or so from the church."A young adult ministry coordinator, Daniel Godinez, was 27 when he reconnected with the Catholic church."I didn't have the right friendships, I didn't have the right connections, it all came down to a moment of emptiness in my life," said Godinez.Despite having a great job and friends, he says life's pleasures were not fulfilling him. In 2012, an old friend invited him to a church retreat, which Godinez believes was God calling him back home. "It was absolutely tough, not having support from your friends at that moment when you're going through that transition process, I think is probably the toughest thing you can encounter at that moment in life," said Godinez.Godinez is now the Young Adult Ministry Coordinator at Most Precious Blood in Chula Vista and married to a woman he met through the church.Rivera says COVID-19 has impacted the church's ability to reach new people; rather than large gatherings, they must rely on small events to continue outreach. Meet a woman who surprised herself and now inspires all of us.For 80-year-old weightlifter Sally Robertson, it takes breathing, focus and form for a solid bench press. But despite her age, Robertson is able to handle these tasks with ease. Just a few months ago, Robertson barely worked out, but things have changed."I love it!" Robertson said. "I love doing it! I really really enjoy it!"Robertson works out with her trainer Alyssa Mallett and husband Bob Robertson who last year, could barely walk."The only way he could get out of a chair was to pull himself," said Robertson. "So we knew that we were looking at moving into senior housing."He started working out at Castle Rock Adventist Hospital HealthFit Gym, a gym staffed with kinesiologists that provides fitness care and encourages physicians to “prescribe” exercise and fitness. "Coming here for two weeks, he could stand up without using hands," said Robertson. "And believe me, that totally got my attention." Robertson decided to start weightlifting, and found the biggest battle wasn't with her body, but with her mind."I had lots of mind talk that said, 'You're too old you can't do this. But I just made up my mind to do my best," said Robertson.Robertson started slow."At first it's like, 'That's way too much I can't do that,'" said Robertson. Eventually, the weight she could lift began to rise, along with her confidence. She set a lofty goal: To compete in her region's Senior Olympics."I mentioned to Alyssa, 'Oh I've always wanted to do that,'" Robertson remembers. "And she said, 'You can.'"Mallett helped Robertson get ready and months later she was ready to compete."When I went to the Senior Olympics, I just said 'I don't care what kind of a fool I make out of myself I don't care anything about anything except I'm just going to do it,'" Robertson said.Robertson dead-lifted 10 pounds more than she had ever done before, and took home the gold."Oh I was I was so excited," said Robertson. "I was. I was excited and I was proud of myself. I was really proud."Sally's not only lifting, but walking in virtual 5Ks. Each medal on her wall helps to change her self image."When I walk in there I look up and I go, 'I am a walker,'" said Robertson.Robertson says we can all make these changes, by taking the first step and going somewhere you feel comfortable."I wouldn't think of going in a gym with all the skinny people lifting weights in all their nice spandex clothes," said Robertson. "I just would not do that."And when the voices in your head tell you that you can't?"Tell those voices to shut up," Robertson said. Ticketmaster has issued a response regarding Billboard's report that concertgoers would have to verify that they've been vaccinated or tested negative for the virus before attending a live show.In an email to E.W. Scripps, Ticketmaster said there is no requirement coming from them about mandating vaccines or testing for future events.In the original report, Billboard reported that the ticket-selling company would set up a way for the customers' COVID test results to be sent to third-party health companies. And through its digital app, Ticketmaster would tie those test results or vaccination status to a ticket digitally that'd be used to enter events.Ticketmaster explained that it is up to the event organizers to set policies around safety and entry requirements."Ticketmaster does not have the power to set policies around safety/entry requirements, which would include vaccines and/or testing protocols, a spokesperson for Ticketmaster said. "That would be up to the discretion of the event organizer, based on their preferences and local health guidelines."The spokesperson explained that they are exploring the ability to enhance their existing digital ticket capabilities amid the pandemic."One path Ticketmaster is actively exploring and working to develop is a framework for syncing with third-party healthcare providers to link COVID vaccine status and/or test results to fans' digital tickets for event entry," the spokesperson said. "All aspects of vaccine verification/testing for the broad public would be set by regional health officials. There are new concerns about people's ability to understand information regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.Dartmouth College researchers found many health agencies are publishing coronavirus information at a 10th grade reading level.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as the American Medical Association and National Institutes of Health say information should not be published at more than an 8th grade reading level.Researchers say it could lead to more people missing information.“If high quality information, in terms of content, like with the CDC, WHO and other official organizations put out, if that is difficult to access, difficult to understand, then that does create a potential or an incentive for looking at less trustworthy sources,” said Joseph Dexter, Neukom Fellow at Dartmouth College.Researchers say health agencies need to use short and direct sentences when writing health information. They should also use short paragraphs, avoiding jargon and technical terms.It's also important to think about how information can be presented visually on a screen.Right now, it's not required that states follow these guidelines, but it is highly recommended. 1192
