A major crackdown could be coming to stop those annoying robocalls. New research from YouMail--a company that developed robocall blocking software--shows each person on the country receives about 150 robocalls a year.Alex Quilici, CEO of YouMail, says these terribly annoying calls keep increasing for two reasons. "One is there are more and more scam calls. The second thing that's driving the increase is people aren't answering the phone anymore," Quilici says.Because people don’t answer their phones, it makes the robocallers place more calls, he says.It’s a problem both Democrats and Republicans can agree on.  Senators John Thune, R-South Dakota, and Ed Markey, D-Massachusetts, have proposed bipartisan legislation to increase the penalties for robocalls to ,000. They are also proposing to extend the time after a crime in which prosecutors must bring their case from one years to three years.Commercial robocalls are illegal, but the Federal Trade Commission, which is tasked with investigating and charging those who have violated the anti-Robocall federal law, has a hard time prosecuting offenders within the current one-year time limit. “If you look at the current enforcement efforts, there's been a 0 million fine and million fine that's covered people who've made 100 million robocalls or a couple hundred million robocalls. That's a drop in the bucket of the nearly 50 billion we're going to have this year,” Quilici. “It's going to take a lot more than just enforcement and some better regulation to solve the problem."Until legislation to crack down on people who make robocalls passes, Quilici suggests:  1674

A judge ruled Tuesday the City of Omaha must release a video showing the death of a TV crewman during a shootout at Wendy's in 2014.Bryce Dion, a sound mixer on a shoot at a Wendy's in Omaha for the reality TV show "Cops," was shot and killed Aug. 26, 2014, after Omaha Police returned fire on a man who shot a pellet gun at officers. Officers were called to the restaurant on a report of a robbery.In the video, someone could be heard repeatedly asking, "Bryce, are you alright?" He can be seen slumped against a glass wall in the vestibule of the restaurant.Dion was wearing a bulletproof vest, but was hit with a bullet under his armpit. The suspect, Cortez Washington, who was using an airsoft pellet gun, was also killed.In 2016, Dion's brother, Trevor Dion, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city, which had asked a Douglas County District judge to bar the release of the video, according to the Omaha World-Herald. The lawsuit says Dion was doing as instructed when he was hit by gunfire from an Omaha police officer.“Bryce positioned himself where told, when told, and acted in accord with police officer instructions. The perpetrator drew what appeared to be a pistol, but proved to be a pellet gun that simulated discharge. Police responded with live rounds of ammunition. They shot and killed the perpetrator. As they did so, they also shot and killed Bryce who was positioned as directed between at least one police officer who arrived at the scene belatedly, other police officers, and the perpetrator.”Brian Jorde, Dion's attorney, says he plans to use the video and other evidence at trial. The proceedings are expected to begin sometime after July."There's approximately 20 bullet holes just near the area of where Mr. Dion was alone so there's a significant amount of gunfire that was exchanged," Jorde said. "We think the public deserves to know what happens when their taxpayer dollars are at work with the police and otherwise. And I think it sheds light on exactly what happened and that Mr. Dion was caught in the line of the crossfire through no fault of his own."Omaha City Attorney Paul Kratz said the city played the video in court Tuesday to support its motion for the case to be dismissed."The city presented the video to the court in support of its motion for summary judgment, and we believe the video will support that motion," Kratz said when reached by phone Tuesday night. 2468

A Macomb Dakota (Mich.) High School Spanish teacher has been charged for allegedly stealing from the school's homecoming dance and using that money at the casino.According to Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith, Lydia Johnson, 29, is charged with one count of embezzlement from a non-profit organization which could get her 10 years in prison.Johnson was Dakota's student activity coordinator from July 1, 2016 until her recent removal and was responsible for all funds. 483

A man is being charged with assault after fighting with an IHOP manager last week after the manager asked the party to leave a IHOP in Memphis, WREG-TV reported. According to WREG, the IHOP manager asked Malachi O'Kelley's party of five to leave for being loud. A video of the incident shows most of the party leaving when O'Kelley allegedly attacked the manager. One of the members of the party threw a chair at the manager during the scuffle. Other members of the party also threw plates at IHOP employee. The manager responded by throwing a chair at one of the members of the party.WREG reported the manager received multiple stitches to the back of his head, above the eye and near the eyebrow. No other people have been charged in connection to last week's incident. The manager is reportedly back to work, and is looking at increasing security at the restaurant.  Note: Viewers may find video of incident disturbing 984

A cadre of former FDA commissioners under Republican and Democratic presidents say that President Donald Trump has undermined the credibility of the FDA.Robert Califf, Scott Gottlieb, Margaret Hamburg, Jane Henney, David Kessler, Mark McClellan and Andy von Eschenbach pinned a joint op-ed in the Washington Post on Tuesday.Among the group who signed the letter, Gottlieb was Trump’s longest service FDA commissioner, heading the agency for nearly two years until April 5, 2019.The former commissioners said Trump has inserted himself into the vaccine approval process.“But a safe and effective vaccine will not be enough; people will also have to choose to take it,” the former commissioners wrote. “This depends on widespread confidence that the vaccine approval was based on sound science and not politics. If the White House takes the unprecedented step of trying to tip the scales on how safety and benefits will be judged, the impact on public trust will render an effective vaccine much less so.”Last week, Trump said it’s possible he would overrule the FDA if the agency uses stricter guidelines to give an emergency use authorization for a coronavirus vaccine candidate.The group of former commissioners blasted Trump for his comments.“The implications of the recent shift are potentially dire,” they wrote. “When the FDA warns about a risk from contaminated food, will people heed it? When a new drug for cancer or heart disease is approved, will clinicians and families trust it to work? And most urgent for today: When the FDA approves a COVID-19 vaccine, will Americans accept it?”Trump has been at odds with many government public health experts on the timing of when a vaccine would be available to the public.There are several vaccines in Phase 3 testing.
