JERUSALEM, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Israeli researcher Jacob (Koby) Scheuer, from the Tel Aviv University (TAU) School of Electrical Engineering, has developed a nano-scale gyroscope, the Ha'aretz daily reported Sunday.Scheuer developed a new optic-fiber nano-sensor four years ago, along with an optic gyroscope that works in conjunction with the sensor. As he developed the devices, it occurred to him that his discovery could be harnessed to surgical needs, virtual reality, or communications, said the report."What we developed here is an optic gyroscope," Scheuer told Xinhua in a recent interview on Sunday, "like the others, but the breakthrough is that we found a way to measure rotation in a very, very small device using the optic sensor."Optic gyroscopes emit light when they rotate, and change its wavelength when there is any change in the speed of rotation, making it possible to measure velocity and position by the differences in light.Scheuer's gyroscope, however, is so small in comparison to the others commonly used in planes, trains and vehicles, that it can be used in cell phones or watches and does not need satellite connection like the ubiquitous Global Positioning System.The applications of this gyroscope and optic sensor are almost endless, as Scheuer puts it."It can be a pill that you swallow and can move through your body to take pictures or release drugs in a localized area," the researcher explained, "or it can be used by a doctor to operate on a patient who is thousands of kilometers away.""Our gyroscope has complete independent navigation capability, which the others don't have," he stressed.Though the new optic gyroscope works in theory, it still hasn't been tried in out in reality. "It will take some time until we can empirically demonstrate our work, I would say about three to five years," Scheuer added.Alongside the gyroscope, Scheuer continues to work on the optic sensor, whose applications can also be found in security, such as an information security system developed by Scheuer to safeguard online information that acts as a key bearer."When both parties have 'the key' it's virtually impossible to hack the information sent," Scheuer noted, terming the development as a "total paradigm change."

BEIJING, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- China's aviation authorities announced on Tuesday that more passengers traveled by air during the Spring Festival holidays, with Chinese airlines handling some 5.07 million passengers during the period.The number of passengers on flights during the Chinese Lunar New Year holidays, which ended Tuesday, was up 6 percent from the same period last year, according to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).On average, 72 percent of the seats on flights across the country were loaded during the holiday travel season, up 2 percentage points from the same period last year, according to the CAAC.To prepare for the holiday travel surge, the CAAC arranged 38,992 flights during the holidays, including eight chartered flights to Egypt to fly home 1,796 Chinese travelers stranded amid massive protests in the African country.

BEIJING, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese official Zhou Yongkang Tuesday called on law enforcement personnel to take more preventive measures against crime and accidents during the Lunar New Year holiday.Zhou, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, visited community security personnel, a district court, and police patrolling downtown Beijing Tuesday.He also visited a police station that is responsible for keeping public order in the area surrounding the central leadership compound of Zhongnanhai.During his visits, Zhou, who also heads the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the CPC Central Committee, said China was seeing the travel peak for the Spring Festival and some regions were suffering icy weather and lingering drought.He asked the police to take effective measures in traffic control and fire-fighting work, and maintain social order during the holiday season.He commended the practice of deploying special police to patrol the surrounding areas of the Tiananmen Square in central Beijing, saying it could deter crime and enable quick responses to emergencies.During his visit to the district court, Zhou warned there were still "many social conflicts."He asked local courts to solve social conflicts more effectively, promote innovative social management and law enforcement in a just and clean manner.The Spring Festival, or Chinese lunar New Year, is the most important festival for Chinese. LOS ANGELES, March 16 (Xinhua) -- The death rate in the United States reached an all-time low in 2009, dropping 2.3 percent from 2008, a newly released report said.This was the 10th straight year of decline, demonstrating that Americans are living longer than ever, according to the report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics.The nation saw a drop from 758.7 deaths per 100,000 people in 2008 to 741 per 100,000 people in 2009 when 2,436,682 deaths were reported, said the report published by HealthDay News on Wednesday.However, life expectancy for blacks remained unchanged -- 70.9 years for men and 77.4 years for women. The disparity between whites and blacks is now 4.3 years, representing a 0.2 percent increase from 2008 to 2009, the report found.The report said that deaths fell in 10 of the 15 leading causes of death -- heart disease dropped 3.7 percent, cancer fell 1.1 percent, and stroke declined 4.2 percent.Deaths from Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, chronic lower respiratory diseases and accidents all declined 4.1 percent, according to the report.Deaths from flu and pneumonia fell 4.7 percent, and deaths from septicemia, a bacterial infection, decreased 1.8 percent, the report said.Deaths from homicides fell 6.8 percent, but suicides increased from 35,933 in 2008 to 36,547 in 2009. Other than suicide, which overtook septicemia as the 10th leading cause of death, the ranking of the leading causes of death was unchanged from 2008 to 2009, the report noted.Infant mortality hit a record low in 2009, falling from 6.59 deaths per 1,000 births in 2008 to 6.42, representing a 2.6 percent decrease, according to the report.The report, however, did not give reasons for these trends.Experts think behavioral changes, particularly the decline in smoking, are partly responsible for the improvements.The report's lead author Kenneth Kochanek, a statistician at the center, said this is preliminary data, and the final data, which should be available this summer, may shed some light on the findings.
