BEIJING, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- Following several reports of melamine-tainted milk products resurfacing, Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Tuesday vowed a new nationwide campaign in 2010 to ensure food safety."Food is essential, and safety should be a top priority for food. Food safety is closely related to people's life and health and economic development and social harmony," Li said at the first plenary meeting of the recently-established food safety commission under the State Council.According to Li, this year's campaign will focus on the prominent issues of food additives, edible farm products, food production processing, food circulation and import and export, livestock slaughter, the catering industry and health supplements industry, among others."We should understand the foundation for the country's food safety is still weak and the situation is grave," Li said. Melamine-contaminated milk products killed at least six children in 2008 and sickened 300,000.Li stressed responsibility of food producers and vendors while calling on various government departments to strengthen supervision and guidance of these companies.He urged improvement in food safety standards and the food system production check-ups, risk evaluation, accident prevention and emergency response.Li vowed to "thoroughly" investigate the latest milk scandal, destroy all tainted products and severely punish those responsible.Two managers from a dairy company and a milk powder dealer in northwestern Shaanxi Province were arrested on charges of manufacturing and selling food that does not meet hygiene standards, local police said earlier this month.Li urged the strengthening of law enforcement by increasing the frequency of inspection and expanding the supervision to clear up potential troubles and ensure people spend a happy and peaceful Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 14 this year.

BEIJING, March 8 (Xinhua) -- China is making plans to upgrade its food safety system, stressing improved quality standards and strengthened supervision, according to a notice made public Monday at www.gov.cn.In late February, south China's Hainan Province took emergency measures to stop toxic cow peas from entering the market after about 3.5 tonnes of Hainan cow peas found were tainted with a poisonous pesticide.To prevent such incidents and help ensure food safety, the country plans to increase the frequency of food tests and inspections -- especially for dairy products and other high-risk food.National quality standards for diary products will also be released this year.At least six infants died and almost 300,000 became ill across the country after consuming dairy products tainted with the industrial chemical melamine. The scandal was first reported in September 2008 and prompted a food safety overhaul nationwide.

BEIJING, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- A draft regulation on expropriation of houses and relevant compensation is expected to be made public Friday to solicit comments.China's Legislative Affairs Office of the State Council, or cabinet, is going to release the full text of the draft on its website, www.chinalaw.gov.cn.The draft spells out the conditions, due process and compensation of expropriation intended for public interest, such as national defense, key national projects of energy, transportation and education.The draft says local government should, by holding hearings or adopting other opinion soliciting methods, ensure that the public opinions can be heard.The draft also provides that compensation to the house owners should not be less than the market price of similar houses.The draft stresses that no violence, coercion, or other illegal means, such as cutting off the water or power supply of the houses, can be employed in demolition procedures.Demolition for the need to upgrade the quality of dangerous and old buildings should not be carried out without the approval of 90 percent of the house owners, the draft says.The public is invited to comment on the draft regulation any time before Feb. 12 via online postings, email or letters.

GENEVA, March 17 (Xinhua) -- It's still not the time to talk about sanctions against Iran as the door of diplomacy is still open on finding a compromise over its nuclear program, He Yafei, China's ambassador to the United Nations Office in Geneva, said on Wednesday."I think the door of compromise through negotiations, the door of diplomacy, is not closed," He told reporters."We need to do our best, to exhaust every avenue before we decide on whether we should have new additional sanction measures, " He said.The Chinese ambassador said that Iran, as a member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), is entitled to the peaceful use of nuclear energy, but the country "should not develop any capability that can produce nuclear weapons.""We certainly do not want to see an Iran with a nuclear weapon capability...China is very much for safeguarding and strengthening the nuclear non-proliferation regime," He said.According to the ambassador, the way out for Iran's nuclear issue is to have a dialogue and to have negotiations with the country.He added that China had been talking to Iran constantly and urging the country to agree to a proposal by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as a first step to solve the nuclear issue.Under the IAEA proposal, most of Iran's existing low-grade enriched uranium should be shipped to Russia and France, where it would be processed into fuel rods with the purity of 20 percent. The higher-grad nuclear fuel would then be transported back to Iran for the use at a research reactor.The United States and its Western allies have long been accusing Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapons under the disguise of a civilian program.
