SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Rideshare drivers all over California are on strike protesting recent pay cuts by both Uber and Lyft. A small but vocal group of the drivers gathered at the San Diego airport Monday morning, opting to take part in a statewide protest against the companies they say are taking money out of their pockets. Recently, Uber announced it would be cutting drivers wage from 80 cents per mile to 60 cents. Workers say that’s on top of other cuts they’ve dealt with over the years. Drivers who spoke with 10News say other states like New York require companies to pay a minimum rate of more than per hour. Uber and Lyft both issued statements after the protest.Uber said in part, “…we're introducing a new Quest promotion feature, while also changing the per minute, per mile and minimum fare rates. These changes will make rates comparable to where they were in September."Lyft told 10News: "We are always open to conversations around how we can make Lyft better for drivers, but what we hear from the majority is that this is a flexible option that works for them." 1090

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Convention Center opened its doors Wednesday as a temporary shelter for homeless individuals during the coronavirus pandemic.Starting with groups from San Diego's bridge shelters, the center will house homeless individuals to help protect them from the coronavirus and continue providing them shelter. The plan is to move in 400 people Wednesday. Eventually, the convention center will house 1,500 people.RELATED: San Diego converts Golden Hall into homeless shelter, prepares for 'storm' of COVID-19The effort helps the city enforce the CDC's social distancing policy, giving individuals more room to remain six feet apart amid the global outbreak. The move also helps centralize limited shelter staff."This convention center space will help us spread out our shelter beds, be more efficient with staffing, and protect parts of the population that are most susceptible to the coronavirus," Mayor Kevin Faulconer said Wednesday. The center will offer the same services as bridge shelters, including security, food, showers, restrooms, laundry services, ADA accessibility, WiFi access, and health screenings.RELATED: As coronavirus concerns swirl, task force looks out for San Diego's homelessThe convention center is also being used as a pathway to housing services as well, Faulconer said. The convention center is only the first action as part of a larger plan to support a broader approach to addressing homelessness around the city during the pandemic, according to the city. Golden Hall has already welcomed nearly 100 people from bridge shelters. "For countless San Diegans, this has been the site of naturalization ceremonies, allowing them to start their new lives,'' Faulconer said last month. "Now it will be a place where homeless San Diegans can receive services that might save their lives.''Families that were already staying at Golden Hall have been moved to motel rooms for the duration of the shelter. The county's nine bridge homeless shelters with public nurses will convert to screening and triage centers during the pandemic. 2080

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Ridership of dockless scooters and bikes has dropped off dramatically since the summer.New data from the city says 222,076 people rode the vehicles in the two week period ending Oct. 15. That was down from 441,830 rides from July 15 to July 30. "When I first started they were littered everywhere," said Kelly Callaghan, who rides scooters in Pacific Beach. "It's pretty insane how the change happened like this."On Monday, only a handful of people could be spotted riding dockless scooters in some of San Diego's most traveled areas, including downtown and the Mission Beach and Pacific Beach boardwalks. The change could be due to more than just the summer being over.In July, the city instituted new rules that — among other things — required scooter operators to use geofencing technology to reduce speeds on the waterfront and boardwalks to 3 miles per hour. Additionally, police have issued 383 citations and the city has impounded 3,733 devices. So far, two operators have pulled out, and a city hearing office may revoke Lime's permit within the next 30 days. In a statement, Lime said it hopes to continue operating in San Diego“We’re proud of our partnership with the City of San Diego and we believe the evidence presented demonstrates that Lime is the most compliant scooter operator in the city," the company said. "We look forward to addressing all concerns, proving our compliance, and continuing to serve the San Diego community.”On Monday, the City Council approved a response to a grand jury report that said in part the city should increase scooter enforcement. Recommendations to make changes to the city rules could come in the next 30 days. 1690

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County health officials reported Friday 11 hospitalizations due to vaping. Those who have been hospitalized range from 17 to 70 years old, according to County of San Diego Communications Specialist Tom Christensen. The illnesses come as U.S. health officials urge people to stop vaping until they can determine the cause of serious breathing illnesses. Symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain and vomiting. Some 450 cases and as many as five deaths have been identified in 33 states, including California. RELATED: Los Angeles County reports 1st vaping-related death as CDC issues e-cigarette warningCenters for Disease Control officials have not pinpointed a specific vaping device, liquid, or ingredient in connection with the illnesses. However, many of those who were sickened said they had been vaping THC. There's been a split among public health experts about the value of vaping nicotine. Some argue e-cigarettes are not as lethal as conventional cigarettes and can be a valuable aide to smokers trying to kick the habit But others say studies have not established that adult smokers who try vaping end up quitting smoking long term. And they fear that kids who might never have picked up cigarettes are taking up vaping. The Associated Press and AP Medical Reporter Mike Stobbe contributed to this report. 1369
